GREAT LAKES (NNS) -- The Navy is recruiting Sailors to become recruit division commanders (RDCs) at Recruit Training Command, the Navy’s only boot camp, and Officer Training Command, as announced in the NAVADMIN 042/17 message, released Feb. 23.

The job of an RDC is not easy shore duty. The hours are long, the work is physically challenging, and strong character and personal integrity are required throughout the RDCs’ work day. However, the personal reward of training and preparing Sailors for the fleet is unmatched.

Training to be an RDC begins at RDC “C” school. Candidates must have passed the most recent physical fitness assessment, including the run. No optional cardiorespiratory event

may be substituted. RDCs at OTC are E-7 and above, and RDCs at RTC are E-5 and above.

Serving as an RDC results not only in growth as a leader, increased career advancement opportunities, and a feeling of self-fulfillment, but it also includes the following

benefits:

* $450 per month Special Duty Assignment Pay.

* Additional annual clothing allowance of $220.

* Opportunity to earn a Master Training Specialist Qualification.

The RDC duty at OTC and RTC each has its own unique challenges. However, with the significant numbers of RDCs needed at RTC, PERS-4 has instituted an additional sea duty credit incentive for RDCs reporting to RTC on/after Oct. 1, 2016, and who complete a 36-month RDC tour.

Sailors should refer to NAVADMIN 042/17, for information on submitting packages for RDC duty. Additional information can be found on the NPC website.

The Navy joins the nation in celebrating Women’s History Month throughout the month of March.

This year, Navy commands are encouraged to celebrate and reflect on the theme “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business.”

Women have served in the Navy as nurses dating back to the 1800s, most notably during the Civil War when the Sisters of the Holy Cross served aboard USS Red Rover, the Navy’s first hospital ship. In 1948, women gained permanent status in the Navy with the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act.

“One hundred years ago this month, in March of 1917, YNC Loretta Perfectus Walsh became

the first female chief petty officer in the United States Navy, setting the course for trailblazing women serving as leaders in the U.S. Navy,” said Vice Adm. Jan Tighe, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare, Director of Naval Intelligence. “The list of those

trailblazers is long, and includes one of my inspirations, Rear Adm. Grace Murray Hopper.”

Women serve in every rank from seamen to admiral, and hold nearly every job from naval aviator to deep-sea diver. Nineteen percent of the Navy’s enlisted force are women, including eight percent of all senior and master chiefs. Eighteen percent of the officer force and 11 percent of all admirals are comprised of women.

“For Chief Walsh, Adm. Hopper, and so many others, it was not about being a woman serving in the Navy... it was about serving the Navy and this great nation. I’m proud to follow in their footsteps.” said Tighe.

Lincoln (CVN 72) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) hockey teams faced off, Feb. 25, at the Norfolk Scope

arena in support of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).

The NMCRS provides financial assistance in the form of interest-free loans and grants to Sailors and Marines in need. The organization’s annual fund drive kicks off March 1.

A portion of the proceeds from the game’s ticket sales was donated to the organization. The good-natured carrier rivalry gave Sailors from Lincoln and Ike an opportunity to root for their respective home teams as well as support of a good cause.

In 2016, Abraham Lincoln raised nearly $64,000 during its NMCRS fundraising campaign. This year, the command hopes to contribute even more by making 100 percent face-to-face contact with each Sailor aboard.

“Every one of us could donate just $3 a paycheck to NMCRS,” said Capt.

Ronald Ravelo, the commanding officer of Abraham Lincoln. “That is not even a cup of coffee and, yet, that little amount adds up to about $75,000 we could potentially raise. NMCRS is about Sailors and Marines taking care of and helping out each other. This is our opportunity to help ourselves.”

“However, it isn’t just about raising money,” said Lt. Patrick Fleenor, Lincoln’s NMCRS fund drive co-coordinator. “This is also an opportunity to educate our Sailors on the many, many things that Navy-Marine Corps Relief can do to help Sailors. This is our opportunity to share stories of how this organization has helped many Sailors over the years.”

The NMCRS offers a range of programs beyond emergency loans, including financial counseling, education assistance, health education and post-combat support, child budgeting, disaster relief, emergency travel funding, and access to thrift shops. By using a workforce

composed mostly of volunteers, most contributions go back to service members and their families.

Hampton Roads Sailors and Marines received $8.7 million in loans and grants in 2016, said Joe Schnurbusch, the deputy director of the Norfolk NMCRS.

“We benefit from events like this hockey game not only from proceeds, but also by coming out and providing information on how we can help Sailors, Marines, retirees and widows,” said Schnurbusch. “We are also trying to recruit volunteers because we are a volunteer service organization.”

With NMRCS all Sailors and Marines can walk away a winner. In the hockey game, however, there was only one. Lincoln skated away with the victory, 8-4.

Lincoln Sailors made a commitment to save during the annual Military Saves Week campaign, Feb. 27- March 4.

Military Saves Week serves as part of the nonprofit organization America Saves and the Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness Campaign to persuade, motivate and encourage service members to save money and reduce consumer debt.

The week provided an opportunity for the command to focus on financial fitness and promote good savings habits to Sailors and their families by encouraging them to set financial goals in order to better prepare for their future.

“As adults and as Sailors, you have to be prepared for anything to happen in life as well as at work,” said Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Sirsamuel Corley. “My end goal is to clear out any debt I have acquired through my years of adulthood and to have a cushion for later on in life.”

Command Financial Specialists aboard the ship set-up a display on the mess decks to distribute information about taking the Military Saves Pledge, financial planning, investing, retirement planning, and more. The command also shared posts via social media throughout the week to educate its followers about the campaign and share financial tips.

Commanding Officer Capt. Ron Ravelo commented on the importance of Sailors’ financial security.

“By budgeting your money and being fiscally responsible, you can achieve financial security later on in life,” said Ravelo. “A solid financial plan can help you

achieve financial independence.” In addition to encouraging members

to save, the campaign provides CFSs a chance to discuss the various financial and educational resources available to them aboard the ship as well as through Fleet and Family Support Centers. said Chief Mass Communication Specialist Amy Kirk, Abraham Lincoln’s Military Saves Week coordinator.

“We are here to help Sailors save for their future or their goals – whatever those may be. Lincoln CFSs are asking our Sailors to make a commitment to themselves and start saving today,” said Kirk.

Abraham Lincoln Sailors are encouraged to visit the Military Saves webste, www.

militarysaves.org, to take the Military Saves Pledge and to change the way they think about money. The pledge inspires you to set a goal and make a plan, not just for the week but through the entire life.

“Act now and take the pledge, and commit to taking control of your finances and saving for the future,” said Kirk.

L incoln Sailors from the ship’s Post Office volunteered Feb. 18, on the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth, Virginia.

With axes, shovels, loppers and pruners in hand, three Lincoln Sailors removed invasive species of trees, vines and weeds surrounding the main office building.

“Volunteering made me feel like I was doing my part in the community I live in,” said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Brian Alston. “It’s important for me to volunteer because service in the community is the most honorable way to show my gratitude.”

Named after William Hoffler, a Revolutionary war militia captain, the wildlife sanctuary is nestled at the mouth of the James River and boasts 142- acres of protected lands.

Originally utilized for farm lands and a means for trade and commerce to colonists in the 1600’s, the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve and surrounding lands also played a

Coordinator, James Bussey, one of only three staff members who help to maintain the sanctuary year round said, “It’s really cool when we can have volunteers out here. We get to see areas wildlife couldn’t access before; the areas come to life and become habitable. It all just adds that much more worth to this sanctuary.”

Mr. Bussey reminded the volunteers of the importance of being an active member in our surrounding community by getting out and volunteering regularly.
