W elcome to the Riverbank Palais! From the ashes of the Palais de Danse,

Adelaide’s floating dance hall of the 1920’s, the Palais has returned as the heart and hub of the 2017 Adelaide Festival. Our new Palais is a tribute to Adelaide’s rich history, a celebration of the DIY ingenuity of South Australians and the joie de vivre of Adelaide in March.

Not only a Festival club, the 2017 debut Palais program offers more than 60 free and ticketed events across 18 days and nights of the Adelaide Festival. From dawn ‘til late, there’s a jam-packed daily program spanning live music, theatre, dancing, DJs, talks, artist forums, long lunches and more.

The surrounding Parc Palais will also be home to food and wine

from some of the best providores South Australia has to offer along with unmissable precinct entertainment. There’s something for every taste, age and interest, all brought to you by more than 130 local, national and international artists and special guests.

The 2017 Riverbank Palais would not be possible without the shared vision and unwavering commitment of our donors, business partners, the South Australian Government, our Artistic Associates Bob Cousins and Gill Minervini and the Festival board and staff.

We can’t wait to welcome you aboard.

T here, in the dim distance of the city’s receding cultural memory one jewel

still glows: the “Taj Mahal of the Torrens”, the “most distinctive and beautiful place of entertainment in the Commonwealth”.

Ask your grandma if you don’t believe it, but an ornate floating ballroom known as The Floating Palais was the pinnacle of Adelaide’s nightlife throughout the 1920s, until its mysterious sinking

“after a series of explosions” at the height of the decade.

Now, polish your dancing shoes and get ready for its phoenix-like return as the hub of Adelaide Festival 2017. A stunning, newly-designed Floating Palais will light up the Adelaide Riverbank this festival season. As classy or as casual as you like, climb aboard The Riverbank Palais and have the time of your life.

Parc Palais is the perfect place for a culinary experience that highlights what SA does

best – telling stories through food and wine.

Delicious, affordable, theatrical and totally South Australian, you can enjoy a snack, drink, dinner or pre- or post-show meal.

With beautiful food cooked by one of Adelaide’s favourite chefs – Brad Sappenbergh of Comida at Adelaide’s Central Market – Parc Palais will proudly show off our state’s best produce.

Expect Comida’s world famous Paella (seafood or vegetarian), a flaming fire pit with ethically sourced meat on a spit, fish and chips, lentils, chickpeas, eggplant and all sorts of veges cooked over flames in front of your eyes. Oysters, prawn cocktails and special sweet endings that will take you right back to childhood.

With a menu curated by Gill Minervini (Dark Mofo Winter Feast, City of Sydney Events) with Food Consultant Duncan Welgemoed (Africola, Lola’s Pergola), there’s no reason not to experience the entire menu, night after night.

With thanks to Comida

“A brilliant twist on the old fairground classic” Daily Review

House of MirrorsChristian Wagstaff and Keith CourtneyAustralia

T here is only one way in. Getting out is an art. House of Mirrors is a fascinating labyrinth of endless

mirrors which plays with the darker side of altered perception.

Having intrigued and disoriented minds at Dark Mofo and Sydney Festival, Parc Palais revellers can stumble their way through a kaleidoscope of chambers, voids and doorways made up of over fifty tonnes of mirrored glass.

There are no added gimmicks, no special effects or lighting, only the primary ingredient of carefully arranged mirrors, geometry and pure optical illusion.

T ravel back in time to the roaring 20s and the original Palais de Danse as Andrew Nolte and His Orchestra breathe new life into the music of the era.

Dubbed by The Sydney Morning Herald as “Australia’s most noted 20s-styled jazz orchestra” and boasting a decade of experience in Gatsby-style entertainment, Andrew Nolte and his gang have been bringing the charleston and foxtrot back with unmatched exuberance and polish. Armed with an arsenal of genuine 1920s dance orchestrations, evening wear and vintage instruments, this 10-piece ensemble evokes the Prohibition Era with precisely the same style, vitality and pep.

“It was impossible not to love this merry Mexican band…Mexico and Morrissey are actually a match made in heaven” The Sydney Morning Herald

MexrrisseyMusic | Mexico

L atin music and 80s rock aren’t an obvious combination, but in Mexico, Morrissey’s songs of love and loss

have long had a passionate following. Now, a team of musical gunslingers out of Mexico City pay homage to that love by reinventing the iconic music of The Smiths frontman.

Painting a vibrant and joyous picture of this unlikely obsession is an adventurous six-piece super-group from Mexico’s rock and pop world, pulled together by DJ and producer Camilo Lara.

Following sell-out seasons in Sydney, London, New York and beyond, and described by The Guardian as one of ‘The 10 Best Gigs of 2017 to Book Now’ it is Adelaide’s turn to experience this global sensation as Mariachi horns, accordion and bajo sexto prove that music truly has no boundaries.

Lord Echo Sound SystemFeat Lisa Tomlins and Mara TKMusic | New Zealand

REMIMusic | Australia

A multi-instrumentalist producer, engineer and DJ, Lord Echo’s

music imagines a world where reggae and rocksteady rub shoulders with Latin music, disco, African soul and techno. His aesthetic never strays far from the ever popular sounds of the 60s and 70s, but he combines it with the high quality of sound we expect today.

Through this combination of imagination and technical mastery, Lord Echo has crafted a sound that is instantly recognisable, even in today’s over saturated world of music. Lord Echo Sound System will be joined on stage by vocalists Lisa Tomlins and Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle) for the opening weekend of The Riverbank Palais.

R EMI burst onto the Australian music scene earlier this decade with

his unique style of hip-hop and soul, sharing his raw brand of storytelling with the world.

Through collaboration with Sensible J, REMI’s rhythmic flow and honest delivery is paired with live instrumentation, found-

sounds and soulful electronics to create a truly inimitable performance style.

Named Triple J’s Unearthed Artist of the Year in 2013, this charismatic performer knows how to command a stage and is sure to whip the Palais into a frenzy.

F unny, poignant and playful, The Duke weaves together the tragi-comic fate of a family heirloom – a

summer lunches made by some of Australia’s best chefs, all with a distinct connection to Adelaide.

Even if you weren’t there, you’ve tasted the 80s through the chefs that have been inspired by this amazing time of culinary creativity. This was the era Adelaide shot to worldwide culinary fame, producing chefs who have delighted diners around the world.

The Long Lunch series will bring together the chefs who shaped (and still shape) our culinary destiny with those influenced and inspired by the times. Each chef will create a menu on this theme that showcases SA produce, all while sharing their own personal story. You’ve seen the art; now hear the story behind it. Bring your lunch down to the Riverbank Palais and experience

the free Festival Forums, hosted by one of Australia’s most influential commentators, David Marr.

The celebrated author and journalist will chat with a range of Festival artists, performers, directors and thought leaders, including Barrie Kosky, Miriam Margolyes, Rufus Wainwright, Radical Son, Alexis Wright, Duncan Welgemoed and more.

With each day taking a different focus, this is your chance for an unprecedented peek behind the curtain on Adelaide Festival 2017.
