WEIGHT GAIN AND EYE MUSCLE AREA OF GOATS IN PEN TRIAL Independent trial conducted by James Cook University The goats that were fed Desmanthus hay + minerals gained liveweight 32% faster than the goats fed Rhodes grass hay + cotton seed + minerals The goats fed Desmanthus hay + minerals had 40% more eye muscle area and nearly twice the fat thickness at the 12th 13th rib at slaughter compared with the goats fed Rhodes grass hay + cotton seed + minerals The goats fed RGH + minerals and RGH + urea + minerals failed to produce acceptable weight gains and a saleable animal over the 138 day period 1. 2. 3. To evaluate the live weight gains and eye muscle area of Boer-cross goats on different hay and supplement diets. The goats were split randomly into four groups and fed different hay based diets over 138 days. PEN TRIAL - GOATS The high palatability and high protein content of Desmanthus cultivar JCU1 hay promotes intake and liveweight gains. Goats on the JCU1 diet had the highest dry matter intake, crude protein intake, and metabolisable energy intake, with saleable animals produced over the 138 days of the trial. Without the addition of cotton seed the Rhodes grass hay and other supplelemts were not able to produce saleable goats in the same period Reference: Aoetpah A., Gardiner C., Parker A., Gummow B. & Walker G., (2018), Growth and eye muscle area of cross-bred Boer goats fed Progardes Desmanthus cultivar JCU 1 hay, Animal Production 2018, Australian Society of Animal Production Conference, Wagga Wagga 2-4 2018 Disclaimer: All information, including any trial results, provided by Agrimix Pastures is considered accurate at the time of publication. Conclusion

The high palatability and highprotein content of Desmanthuscultivar JCU1 hay promotes intakeand liveweight gains.

Goats on the JCU1 diet had thehighest dry matter intake, crudeprotein intake, and metabolisableenergy intake, with saleable animalsproduced over the 138 days of thetrial.

Without the addition of cotton seedthe Rhodes grass hay and othersupplelemts were not able toproduce saleable goats in the sameperiod
