Hello Summerside Families! We are at our best when we work together as a team with Home and School. A great example of that team effort was our conferences this week. Families and teaching staff worked together on conference night for our children and that approach is a winning combination every time. I had the chance to speak with many parents and I can confidently say the Summerside family is well. Our classrooms are the engine of our school. The classrooms are the heart of our daily business, and every- thing we do at Summerside supports a top notch instructional day for our students. The day is set up so our teachers can focus on teaching. Mathematics is a content area which is cru- cial for our students' long term academic success. A strong background in Mathematics opens many doors for students in their future. This week I stopped in Miss Tabar's 4th Grade Math class. Students were learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominators. The students learned that when they add and subtract these fractions, they only add or subtract the numerator and the denominator stays the same. Students used fraction tiles for a visual in order for them to understand why the denominator does not change when performing the operations. Students were then required to draw a model in their math journals to represent the equation given. Super job Mrs. Tabar and her students!!! Academic Achievement is a top priority at Summerside and we are building a culture which rewards and rec- ognizes students. We are proud of our kids! 5th and 4th grade students who earned the honor roll were treated to an after school pizza party this week, courtesy of our fine PTO. I couldn't be more proud of our students for their hard work in the classroom. The names of the students who earned First Honors, which is all "A"s, and Second Honors, which is A's and B's, is included in this edition of the Summerside Weekly Up- date. 3rd grade will have their honor roll pizza luncheon next week. Hats off to our Summerside Scholars! Our after school events are in full swing. Last Friday, we held our traditional Mother/ Son dance and our young boys and their mothers had a terrific time dancing the night away. A special thank you to our PTO for putting this event on for our families. A sincere thank you to Jen Simpson for organizing everything. This Week’s Journalism Club Article:

Choose Kind Remember when we challenged you to do a random act of kindness? We’ve been

watching and wanted to share the first kind act we saw at Summerside! During recess on Wednesday, a student was trying to get the basketball from another student. His play caused another player to fall and injure his leg. Michael Mounce saw what happened and immediately ran over to help the injured player to get up. It was outstanding to see one student help another when they were hurt.

Here are some ideas for random acts of kindness:

If you see a student do something really good, say “good job” or “good work.” Make someone’s day by giving them a smile.

If someone drops their books, maybe you could help them pick them up.

Help someone open a wrapper or container at lunch if they have trouble.

Is someone is upset, try to make them laugh or write a thoughtful note.

Start being kind! We’ll be watching every day and hopefully you’ll find yourself in our

next article.

Considering Weather Related Closings / Delays

In West Clermont, Superintendent Keith Kline makes the decision about emergency

weather school opening delays or full school day closings. Current weather condi-

tions, weather forecasts, road conditions, wind chill and actual temperatures are es-

sential information for determining a school weather emergency. The information

comes from a number of sources.

· Local weather experts

· WCSD supervisor of transportation, and director of business operations

· Local and county government officials

· Law enforcement and safety officials

· Surrounding school superintendents

Dr. Kline’s goal is to decide upon a weather emergency by 5:00 AM. If appropriate, the communication plan is

set into motion, immediately. School delay and closing information is broadcast as soon as possible via:

· All Cincinnati commercial television and radio stations;

· Automated phone system;

· West Clermont Website, www.westcler.org;

· Facebook, www.facebook.com/westclermont;

· Twitter, https://twitter.com/WestCler;

· Mobile app message.

The most used options for weather emergencies are opening delays of one or two hours, and full day school

closings.

**On a rare occasion, weather conditions may become hazardous during the school day. Early dismissals may

be appropriate. In that case, instructions will come from the district office. Messages will be broadcast via the

communication outlets listed above. Parents must be sure that their child knows where to go and what to do if

this should occur. Please create a plan, with your child, for emergency weather related early releases.

Child Focus K+ and Extended Day Delay and Closing information

If West Clermont is on a delay, Morning Extended Day and Morning K+ will be closed. Our afternoon K+

will run. Our K+ program begins at 12:50 pm. Parents will be able to drop their child off at that time to their

K+ teacher. Students will not have a lunch period. Dismissal procedures will be the same. Afternoon Extended

Day will run. Summerside parents can bring their students to the K+ classroom and drop them off. If West

Clermont is closed our programs are closed as well.

Procedures and Processes

Volunteers-All volunteers that work on-on-one with a student or chaperone a field trip must be finger-

printed at the Main Office. There is no cost to be fingerprinted and your fingerprints are good for 5 years.

The Main Office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. in the morning and from 1:00

P.M. – 4:00 P.M. in the afternoon for fingerprinting. Parents do not have to be fingerprinted to eat lunch

with their child or attend a school party.

Phone Calls and Emails for Summerside Teachers - Summerside Parents, communication is a key to

our success in providing your children the education they deserve. In order to expedite communication with

you and our Teaching Staff the best time during the day for our teachers to return your phone calls and your

emails directed to them is at 4:00p.m. each day. Our Teachers also have a window on most days from 8:30-

8:50a.m. but often are in meetings in the morning. The daily schedule is built so the teachers are teaching

students or with students from 9:05-3:45p.m. daily with a 1/2 lunch in the middle of the day. As a result, it is

not possible for teachers to check emails and make phone calls during the instructional day. If they did they

would not be teaching the students. If you need to contact a Teacher (by Phone or Email) during the instruc-

tional day and it is an emergency please call our School Office at 947-7901 and our Office Team can serve

you promptly. We are here to serve you and the process above will streamline important communication dur-

ing the school day while allowing our Teachers to focus on the important work of educating our children.

Lost and Found-At Summerside we have a process for making sure lost and found items get back to

their owner. Any items (coats, hats, gloves, lunchboxes, books, etc.) that are found are taken each day to the

Cafeteria. All students at Summerside know that during noon lunch before they head out to recess that this is

the location they can go to and find misplaced items. Our Cafeteria Supervisors make sure all items brought

to the Cafeteria are returned to their owner in the Cafeteria during noon lunch. The last week of each month

the Cafeteria Supervisors notify all students to check the lost and found each day. On the last day of the

month the lost and found items are bagged up, kept for one week and if not claimed sent to Goodwill. Lost

and found items such as glasses, purses, wallets, and money are held in the Office where they can be claimed.

Food Brought Into School (Birthday Treats) - All Students at Summerside Elementary eat the lunch

provided by the Cafeteria or Pack their lunch. On special occasions when students have birthdays and bring

in birthday treats those treats need to be dropped off in the Office first. It is our hope and expectation that

treats be store bought, clearly listing all ingredients. Our School Clinic Aide (Mrs. Robinson) checks to

see what classroom the birthday treats are for, and checks to see if any students in that class have food

allergies. At that point the treats are taken to the Cafeteria and the Cafeteria Supervisors make sure the stu-

dents received their birthday treats in the Cafeteria with their lunch. Students with a food allergy are pro-

vided at treat by the school Clinic Aid that is safe for their medical condition.

Lunch Guests - Parents/Guardians/and Grandparents are encouraged and welcome to eat lunch with

their children in the Summerside Cafeteria during their child's lunch period. Two special tables have been set

up for our noon lunch period guests. Our Guests will need to check in at the School Office, Our Office Staff

will have you sign in and provide you a security badge and will direct you to the Cafeteria from the Office

once you have checked in.

Procedures and Processes (cont.)

Hats and Toys - Hats are not permitted at any time for students to wear in the building. Once kids enter

our building the no hat rule sets the tone that we are here for schoolwork and that hats are not to be worn in the

building as a matter of respect. Toys are not permitted in the building. Toys are a distraction to learn-

ing. Students just need to bring their backpacks, books and school materials, and that is it. We are here to

learn and toys are a distraction. Playground equipment (balls, etc) will be provided by the school.

Lost Media Center Books - If a student loses a media center book the parent needs to notify Mrs. Fields

in the office regarding who your child is and what book was lost. Mrs. Fields will update the parent on the

process for paying a fee for the lost book to be replaced in the library. Once the parent pays for the lost book,

the teacher will be notified that the student may begin checking out books again.

Winter Recess - We will have outside recess to give our kids the chance to get some fresh air and engage

in active play with their friends. Please make sure your children come to school dressed for the colder tem-

peratures. Students have a 30 minute recess each day and need hats, coats, and gloves to be prepared for the

colder temperatures. We will be going outside every day that it is not raining/snowing as long as the tempera-

ture is above 28 degrees with the wind chill added in.

Progress Book-Progress Book allows parents and students online access to grades, interims and report

cards. Usernames and passwords went home with your child in a letter explaining how to navigate Progress

Book in September. Use the link on the left-hand side of the school website www.westcler.org to access the

parent user guide and/or login to view your child's progress. Please call Karen Fields in the school office with

any questions at 947-7901.

account. To use EzPay, click the link on the left-hand side of the page. After creating an account, you may

simply log in to check your child's balances and send your payments to the school directly. In order to display

your child's balance information, you must know your child’s student ID. which you can obtain by calling
