WET/EXTREME WEATHER

In the event of wet or extreme weather, any cancellations of training or

matches will be communicated through the Marist College Ashgrove College

APP. Please check this regularly if poor weather looks imminent.

SATURDAY SPORT Unless there is extreme weather,

no decisions will be made until the morning of competition. The APP will be updated as regularly as possible.

TRAINING We will aim to let students know

by 2nd break if possible. This is not always realistic, so we encourage all students to have a contingency plan if poor weather arrives late in the day.

From the Head of Sport Continued... AIC SWIMMING Next Monday, March 2 one of our major three carnivals for the year will take place with our swimming team competing in the AIC championships at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. The demands of these “individual” sports is so great and often involves many early mornings, late afternoons and months of preparation and hard work that culminate in one day of competition. While the performances of each student are individual, their effort is all about their team.

Led by Head Swimming Coach Mr James Boyce, Assistant Coach Damien Bromley and Swimming Coordinator Mrs Cathy Geraghty the boys have had a great season and we know that with a fully fit team representing the College that this year will be an exciting competition. While each race will have many different schools challenging, the battle for the top schools will once again come from St. Peter’s and Iona College. We are excited to see many PB’s next week and we wish every swimmer from Year 5-12 the very best.

The team were presented with their selection letters at the pool on Tuesday afternoon and while several boys may have left disappointed with missing out on selection we hope that this will inspire them for future years to continue to develop. Thank you very much again to the entire squad who pushed each other over the long season and who deserve as much praise in their efforts to make the team. Well done.

AIC SPORT We finally played our first round of cricket and AFL games for the 2020 season. Many boys were a bit rusty after the break but now that the season is underway we look forward to our students developing through the final 4 rounds to finish their seasons off strongly.

Our volleyball teams will be looking to bounce back from some close losses while our cricketers were fantastic across the program. Our AFL teams played against some high-quality opposition and learnt many valuable lessons for their remaining rounds. We look forward to seeing how they will respond against SEC this weekend. Please see below for all results from Round 3 of sport.

Good luck for the upcoming weekend of sport against St. Edmund’s College!

TERM 2 SPORT There are some preseason preparations beginning next week for rugby union and football (soccer). While it is very necessary for our students to begin their preparations for these physically demanding sports we remind all students to remain focused on their current sporting commitments.

The rugby & football schedules for the next few weeks will be emailed to students and posted on the College App by tomorrow (Thursday).

NEXTGEN RUGBY CLINIC Monday 6, Tuesday 7 & Wednesday 8 April @ Marist College Ashgrove

NextGen Rugby will be hosting their annual rugby clinic at the College during the first week of the holidays. This provides invaluable physical preparation in preparing for the upcoming rugby season. Please see the flyer later in the newsletter for information and the special discount applied to all Marist College Ashgrove students wishing to attend

GETTING READY FOR TERM 2 Here are some important things to consider in preparation for Term 2 sport:

- Playing uniform – football/rugby boots, football shirt/rugby jersey, football/rugby shorts - Protective gear – shin guards, mouthguards, headgear, shoulder pads - Water bottle – each student should have their own NAMED water bottle to be brought

to training and games

IMPORTANT REMINDER Term 1 sports (AFL, cricket, volleyball, swimming and cross country) all take priority over any Term 2 preparations. If there is a clash, then students are expected to maintain their commitments to their Term 1 sport.

Cross Country 2020 Welcome to the 2020 Cross Country season!

With MARC well and truly underway, our Cross-Country season is nearly upon us with staff and squad members eager to once again retain the AIC Championship this year. There will be a lot of information coming out within the next week, through email and the College App, in regards to the Cross-Country season training schedules, competition information and the general calendar.

We are very fortunate at our College to have such a great culture in our cross-country program with enthusiastic students, keen old boys willing to assist with coaching and now in 2020 we are excited to have a large number of staff willing to be involved.

Mr Lehman, Mr Moniz, Mr Monsour and Mr McTaggart have been overseeing the MARC program and we are so grateful to have such experienced staff members working with our runners.

Mr Matt Ingram has joined the College this year as Sports Assistant and will be taking up the role of Cross-Country Coordinator. Mr Ingram has been busy organising the season calendar and liaising with students and coaches to begin our preparations. With our Head Coach, Connor O’Leary, returning along with Mr Chris Hants, Mr Shane Ward, Miss Elizabeth Kenny, Mr Corey Lucas and Mr Marcus Schrader on the Cross-Country staff this should be a great year ahead.

Individual Achievements - Jordy Chugg and Jay Adams who represented Met North at the Queensland

State School Triathlon over the weekend. Both boys competed strongly in Senior Males’ Individual Race and narrowly missed out on State selection. They earned a silver medal in the Division 1 relay on Saturday morning. Great Job!

- James Prole who has been selected into the Queensland State School Triathlon team. He will compete at the National Triathlon Championships in Hervey Bay during late March. Best of luck James!

From the College Sport Captain This week’s round wraps up was written by Foley House Sports Captain and integral member of the 1st XI Cricket; Lachlan Laffer.

It was a rather tough couple of days for all of the Marist First’s teams against St Laurence’s. To start off on Friday afternoon, the 1st XVIII AFL had a close game only just missing out on a win, going down 112 to 14, giving the Laurence’s team a scare when Marist scored their first point in the third quarter. The volleyball was always going to be a tough game with it being a premiership decider. Although the team lost 3 sets to nil, they gave it their best, fighting until the very last point. With Saturday marking the first game of the AIC cricket season, it didn’t give the outcome we all wanted. The 15-run loss was nothing short of a shock, especially as the Marist top-order batsmen were leading with intent earlier on in the game. Overall, it was a weekend that can be forgotten but can always be used as a learning experience for the future.

This week Tom Collier sat down with our 1st XVIII AFL Coach Darian Johns and 1st XI Cricket Player Nathan Armitage.

From the College Sport Captain

Nathan what sort player are you and is your aspect of cricket?

I’m an opening batter that values patience. I’m also the wicketkeeper for the team. I love the culture that evolves in a cricket team, and obviously, I enjoy being amongst the boys for all our trainings and for a Saturday. I also like scoring hundreds.

Coming back a tough loss against Laurie’s, what can we see from the side in the future?

I think we can see an energetic team that is hungry for their first win of the season at our first home game against Eddies. Obviously coming back from a loss, but we will continue to work hard and hopefully aim for the shared premiership now.

Who should we all keep an eye out throughout the season?

I think after not his best game last week Tom Philp will fire with the bat and remain consistent with the ball bowling tight overs throughout the middle period. Also, our fast bowler Jacob Kumeru is another one to look out for with his express pace and movement of the new ball. I also consider our top 3 to be a dangerous aspect for opposition teams throughout the season.

TIME OUT WITH ... NATHAN ARMITAGE

TIME OUT WITH ... DARIAN JOHNS

Can you give a brief history of involvement in the sport?

I first started playing AFL as a junior with South Adelaide FC, before moving to West Adelaide. I played for South Australia State Schools side in Year 12 playing at Centre Half forward or Full forward. If I was within distance of goals I was kicking every time. Unfortunately, injuries took me out of the game with constant shoulder and knee problems.

Who has been some of your favourite players to coach in your career?

Max Hewett at Ashgrove back in 2014 was fun, especially when he kicked the last goal of two matches in a row to win us both games. He still talks about that.

What have been the proudest moments in your coaching career to date?

Trying to build AFL in QLD and at Marist College Ashgrove. It’s easier to coach in South Australia because everyone grows up with a football in their hands. I enjoy watching players who have never played really enjoy it, like Harry McVeigh and Max Mee last year. Boys out to have a kick and have fun. The boys first win last year against St Edmunds was good, playing ‘We are the Champions’ was slightly over the top, but enjoyable.

AIC CRICKET 2020 - ROUND 3 VS SLC - SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY

TEAM TEAM REPORT

9A After a few weeks of rain affected weekends, the Marist College boys enjoyed getting out onto the pitch and feeling leather on willow. Ben Ferguson won the toss and elected to bat. The game was evenly matched throughout, Marist finished their batting innings with 130 on the board. After 33 overs, St Laurence’s came away with the win. We look forward to our game this week.

9B Bowling first on Cameron oval, our boys were full of energy and keen to finally get the season underway. All bowlers doing their part to keep Laurie’s to 6/116 (35) including a fantastic direct run out from Munroe Wood. Cue the famous Marist collapse as we were 6/60 at drinks (17) with a glimmer of hope in the form of a gutsy Will Ford innings at number 3. However, our tail dug in as Laurie’s could only complete 28 of the 35 overs leaving us at 9/105.

We secured a 28-run victory on count back as Laurie’s only managed 77 runs after 28 overs so an interesting end to the first game of the season.

9C Great first up win for the 9C team. Laurie’s won the toss and elected to bat. Ben Courtney started the bowling innings in marvellous fashion by taking a wicket with his first ball. He then backed that up in his second over taking another wicket and finished with 2/6 off two overs. Solid bowling by Pat Ryan at the death – including a great caught and bowled – he finished with 2/2 off four overs. Run chase never looked in doubt. Cody O’May top scored with 19* and Robbie power followed with 16*. Great win for the mighty 9C’s and a match played in great spirit.

9D The team batted first with a great start from the openers and continued on with the rest of the bats men. The 20 overs were seen out and the team then went into bowl. Many good over with a variety of players bowling good lines and a very small amount of extras. The game was won by Marist with over to spare. All in all great first match.

9E After taking the bus out to Tingalpa the Year 9 Boarder’s team were chomping at the bit to stick it to their opposition, the Villanova 9Ds. Atticus Armstrong, Alex Masel and Fergus Duff all posted strong scores helping Ashgrove reach a very respectable 7/123 off of 20 overs. Villanova was no match for the fierce Ashgrove bowling attack led by captain Archie Ryan. With the help of wickets from Big Al’ Boland and some clean glove work from Hunter James Villa fell 70 runs short of victory. This resounding victory has definitely put opposition teams on notice about the quality of this outfit.

8A Ashgrove won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a surface with runs in it. Captain Harry Frost (57*) and James Brandon (48) set up a strong total of 4/164 for St. Laurence’s to chase. After having our visitors 3/30 at drinks, Sam Lewis and Jack Thompson kept the pressure on with the ball aided by some resolute and accurate fielding to restrict Laurie’s to 7/78 securing an 86-run victory.

8B With two batsmen unavailable to face SLC, Frank Piper and Thomas Small proved to be worthwhile additions to the team laying the foundation with graceful knocks of 78 and 39 respectively to help Ashgrove post 2/172. In response SLC struggled to get into the game, with the bowling pressure of Mitchell Trotter (4/7) and Sam Wilcox (2/10) contributing to the visitors being bowled out for 46 in the 21stover.

8C Ashgrove chose to bat after winning the toss and quickly went to work against a spirited SLC attack. Contributions from our top order led to Ashgrove posting 6/117 off of 20 overs. Laurie’s came out of the gate charging but thanks to some tight bowling across the board, Ashgrove was able to bowl Laurie’s out for 95 security a 22-run victory.

8D After being put into bat by Laurie’s our boys came out swinging. Unbeaten knocks from Jacob Keogh and Liam Bourke who both finished on 42 put us in a commanding position of 1/186 at the break. Isaac Pratt had the St. Laurence’s middle order in all sorts finishing with 5 wickets to spearhead an Ashgrove bowling attack that led to an Ashgrove victory of 144 runs. Well done

AIC AFL 2020 - ROUND 3 VS SLC - SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY

TEAM TEAM REPORT

1st XVIII It was a tough game against St Laurence’s first up as the boys were beaten comprehensively by a talented side. The boys showed in patches what they could do, but didn’t capitalise on early opportunities. They didn’t give up all night and kept running and chasing, but gave up too big a lead early on. A hard start after months of preparation, but the boys will bounce back against St Edmunds this week. Contributors who kept trying were Tyler Galligan, Tyler Newell, Jack McIntosh and Nick Fisher.

Intermediates Year 8/9

The first game for the year and on the main oval at Coorparoo. The team and coaches were very excited to finally have a game. Many debutants representing Marist in AFL and they started excellently. A few stray shots for goal and otherwise we could have been in front at the first break in a low scoring game. Our opening goal was kicked by year 8 Asher Parkin. The 8/9s were starting to work well together, great tackling and shepherds a plenty, they hit the front in the third quarter through Urquhart and George Wood. The backline was being well led by the boarders in Thomson, O’May and Munroe Wood. Brave Lachie Berwick showed the way on attacking the footy, was hit from both sides by two large Laurie’s players and inspired us even further. On-ballers in Cottam, Knapp, Clements and Rosenbrook battled hard all game, however the last quarter saw one-way traffic and it was all Laurie’s with 4 goals. Final score a 7.3:45 to 3.4:22 defeat, but an impressive first effort by the Ashgrove lads.

Juniors – Year 7 Round 3’s game against St Laurence’s was the first game of the season for the year 7 team this year. After a bye in round one and an unfortunate wash out in Round 2 it was time for the boys to put what they’d learnt in training to use against a major favourite for the premiership this year in the form of St Laurence’s. The boys started off strong in the first quarter kicking the first goal of the contest off the back of some excellent forward pressure from Harry Wood, captain James Milner was able to capitalise on the loose ball and snap from 25m out. The 2nd quarter saw St Laurence’s fight back to even the contest and in the third quarter they kicked ahead by two goals. In the final quarter the boys rallied and were able to bring the contest back to within a goal but unfortunately the experience of St Laurence’s prevailed. It was and excellent start to the season from the boys they showed great heart and intent, like true Marist men.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A The MCA 6A cricket team did an outstanding job of playing as a team on Saturday. There was constant positive talk in the field, and excellent communication between batsmen to get plenty of quick singles. Each and every player contributed towards this fantastic result.

6B Coming into the first game of the season the 6B boys where nervous. However, this didn’t stop them from delivering a brilliant bowling performance keeping Lauries to under 100 runs. This was then backed up with some steady batting from Matt Murdoch and Fletcher Carlson, chasing the runs down with 5 overs to spare!

6C After all the rain the MCA 6Cs finally travelled out to SLC and opted to field first. It was an extremely tight display with the ball and in the field to restrict St. Lawrence’s to 3/62. This score was then comfortably chased down by MCA, scoring 3/118. Most if not all batsmen contributed and all players should be commended by how they played.

6 Gold Marist were very consistent today; Ben Brassington scored 24 with the bat and Tom Collins was also consistent with 19 from the bat. Leon Nauer was very consistent with the ball taking three wickets. It was a good day for MCA.

6 White The boys played really well and showcased good running between the wickets and good communication on the field.

6 Green A great first match by the mighty 6 Green cricket side with all boys showing a co-ordinated effort in the field and some classy running between the wickets as we batted. Oliver McGauley opened our batting effort hitting a 6 from the very first delivery. Well done to Harry Zantiotis who took 2 wickets and showed great promise as a demon bowler, as well as Finlay Gardiner and Massimo Tsiros who took 1 wicket each. All MCA players improved their skills as the match progressed showing they are a team of champions and have a great season ahead.

5A What a start to their Marist sporting careers! The game highlight could have easily been captain Josh Pope’s long drive for 6 or Salem Tamer’s 1-0 from 2 overs. However, it was the Ashgrovian roar of the whole team as the winning runs were scored with 1 wicket in hand and only a few overs left! Well done to all the boys on a spectacular match!

5B Round 3 saw the Marist 5Bs put on a clinical performance with the bat, ball and in the field. Harry Vickery guided the side with 48*. Congratulations to the boys on a great victory.

5C The 5Cs first Marist game against SLC began well, putting in a gutsy batting performance to post 59. The boys gave it their all in the field, however a strong batting performance from the Laurie’s batters earned them the win. The boys should be commended on their sportsmanship and effort - wearing the blue and gold proudly.

5 Gold 5 Gold had a close first game against St Laurence’s.  Special mention to Thomas Bedggood who took 2 wickets in one over and both James Starrenburg and Finley Nicholson for some good wicket keeping.  Top scorer was Finley with 21 runs.

5 White As a delayed start to the season the boys of 5 White, showed true enthusiasm. Ben and Felix deserve a special mention this week for their displays with the bat. To come out with a win is a great start to the season.

5 Green The boys played incredible for their first time playing for the College, a special highlight was Harrison Smith’s powerful stroke that sent the ball screaming for the boundary on the last ball of the innings.

5 Blue The 5 Blue team came out strong with some solid batting, setting a score of 39 for Ambrose Treacy to try and chase down. The Ashgrove men knew they had to bowl well and with some great wickets and fielding they showed some very promising signs for the season ahead, keeping the ATC boys to 28. The blue team showed wonderful patience, determination and sportsmanship throughout to win their first AIC game at MCA!

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A Marist College played their first game of the year at AFLQ HQ with excitement and anticipation in the air. The boys started strong with an early goal and positive contested possession numbers. However, the St Laurence’s outfit became too much to handle as they kicked consistent goals on the back of precision kicking and effective transition. We look forward to our game this week.

6B A hard-fought game to kick off the season for the 6B’s, with a spirited performance leading to a draw against a physical St. Laurence’s side. Outstanding performers include Riley Waldon, whose 4-goal last quarter was emphatic, and Ben Hawley whose elite run and carry kept the ball flowing through midfield. Much to look forward to next week.

5A The first game of the season was a tough battle throughout the first three quarters, with both teams managing to clear the ball out of the backline and transition that clearance into momentum that would lead to goals and points. But a strong final quarter but the St. Laurence’s midfield allowed them to finish the game slightly on top.

5B The boys gathered as a team for the first time in the Blue and Gold full of excitement and anticipation. From the first ball up, the MCA team swarmed over the opposition at every opportunity to score first and stay comfortably in front for the match. It was very pleasing to see every boy do his job in any position he was asked to move to during the contest.  Thanks to our group of supporters who cheered the boys on to the win.
