Hoping to stir up a little interest in Mars and NASA, the folks in public relations released the image along with the following caption: "This picture is one of many taken in the northern latitudes of Mars by the Viking 1 Orbiter in search of a landing site for Viking 2. "The picture shows eroded mesa-like landforms.
The huge rock formation in the center, which resembles a human head, is formed by shadows giving the illusion of eyes, nose and mouth. The feature is 1.5 kilometers (one mile) across, with the sun angle at approximately 20 degrees. The speckled appearance of the image is due to bit errors, emphasized by enlargement of the photo. The picture was taken on July 25 last year from a range of 1873 kilometers (1162 miles).

Safety RulesThe science laboratory is where you perform experiments and investigations.
What are these safety rules?
Working in pairs write down five safety rules that you think are important in the science laboratory. Then decide which three are the most important. One person will write down your ideas, the other person will share your answers with the class.
You have 10 minutes!
However, if you are to keep yourself and your friends safe, whilst not damaging equipment or apparatus needlessly, it is important that you follow some basic safety rules.
![Page 29: Weekly Schedule- Aug. 5-6](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062409/56814846550346895db55c7f/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Science Safety Rules…
2. Always listen to instructions.
1. Never enter the laboratory without permission.
3. Never run in the laboratory.
4. Always wear safety goggles when performing an
experiment.
5. Always stand up when performing an experiment (unless told otherwise).
![Page 30: Weekly Schedule- Aug. 5-6](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062409/56814846550346895db55c7f/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Science Safety Rules…
7. If you spill a chemical tell the teacher and wipe it up.
6. If you break something tell the teacher straight away.
8. Do not make up your own experiments.
9. Tidy your apparatus away at the lesson’s end.
11. If you wish to ask a question raise your hand.
10. Never eat or drink in the laboratory.
![Page 31: Weekly Schedule- Aug. 5-6](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062409/56814846550346895db55c7f/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Safety First!
Always wear safety goggles!

Hazard Symbols
Hazard symbols are a warning to people to let them know of the potential dangers a chemical or piece of apparatus could hold.
Toxic
Flammable
Irritant
Explosive
Oxidising
Harmful
Corrosive
You will need to know the hazard symbols for the following. Can you guess what they might look like?
