Contemporary Issues sermon
series continues today Over the coming months we will be holding an
occasional sermon series on Contemporary Issues. Mary started the series of sermons by
looking at the place of women, which can be
heard on the St Faith’s website. Last week Paul
preached about the environment and will do so
again this Sunday. The question is:- What is
our place as Christians in caring for our world, and what do we need to do
in response?
New People &
Planet Group
at St Faith’s The sta te o f the
environment, and caring
for it, is one of the most
pressing issues in our world today. We would like to start a new group,
People and Planet, looking at this issue and advising the church on what we
can do to respond. Our new group will pray for the world, and seek ways
to reduce our impact on the environment as a church, in our communities
and in our personal lives, and encourage others to do the same.
If you would like to be involved with the People and Planet Group,
please contact Becca Chamberlain on 023 9200 6184, or at
Reading at the Parish
Eucharist and at Evening
Prayer Yes, it is that time again when we need
volunteers to read at the Parish
Eucharist and at Evening Prayer. The
period of time is from 4th August to the
27th October and the last date is when
British Summer Time ends. What a
thought! The rotas are all on the table at the back of church.

Safeguarding Training For Anyone
Tomorrow Evening at 7.30pm Safeguarding is about making sure that the ways we operate as a church
keep everyone safe from harm. Many people in our church community have to attend safeguarding
training because they are working with children, or vulnerable adults, as
part of their volunteering for the church, but safeguarding is something
which should concern us all.
The new Church of England Safeguarding Policy, which we need to follow as
a church, therefore recommends that a much wider group of people
undertake safeguarding training. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Welcome Team
• Refreshment Helpers
• Flower Team
Choir Members
• Music Group Members
• Sound Team
If you are on one of those teams, but have not previously been to
safeguarding training at St Faith’s , we would like to invite you to
come to training, in the church, at 7.30pm on Monday 8th July.
For more information, you can speak either to Paul, Margaret Hunt, Pam
Rigg or Becca Chamberlain, the church’s safeguarding team.

Sea Sunday – 14th July Next Sunday, 14th July, we are celebrating Sea Sunday, with special services at
9.30am and 11.00am. The 9.30am will not be a Eucharist, but will still focus
on the themes of Sea Sunday. Sundays@11 will be an all-age service, again
around the same themes.
If you know people who might be interested in coming to Sea Sunday themed
services, please invite them along.
Games
Afternoon
21st July On Sunday 21st July we
will be holding a games
afternoon for all
ages. Come and have
fun playing board
games, or outdoor
games, and much
more. Invite your
friends to come along
as well!

New hymn book As we have mentioned in the past, we are planning on
purchasing a new hymn book, to replace the green
New English Hymnal, which is now not very new!
We are doing this because:
Our vision statement commits us to being a
‘progressive’ church - which means doing new
things. So we want to continue to update our
music, retaining the great hymns of the past but
making the most of the great hymns and songs of
the present.
We want to make sure we are using inclusive
language where possible (so we do not sing ‘men’ when we mean ‘men and
women’ - do listen to Mary’s sermon on women from a couple of weeks ago for more on this important topic).
The good news is, we do not need to purchase huge numbers of books,
because many people use the screen these days. So we’re going to purchase
60 copies of Ancient & Modern - Hymns and Songs for Refreshing Worship. We
know this will be enough for everyone who wants one. (The choir have been
secretly using this for a couple of years now!) This will cost us £560, and we
will take this from our reserves, as this is a key investment in the life of our
church.
The version we will be purchasing contains the words only. We know some people also like having the music. If you would like to contribute towards
the cost of a copy or two of the melody version (which has the tune
printed), or even the SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) book, please will
you let Richard Dewland know? The melody version is £20 per copy, and
the SATB version is £27 a copy.
We will be purchasing the books at the end of July, so do let Richard know in
the next few weeks! His contact details are on the back of the Notes.

St Faith’s finances - update We are now half way through 2019, and as part of our commitment to
regularly reporting the church finances, on the page opposite you will find
the church finances for January to June this year.
Things to notice:
We are pretty much on budget so far - thank you to everyone who gives
regularly to the life of our church, though financial giving, and through
giving of your time and talents.
Most of the giving to St Faith’s comes through Standing Order or the
Parish Giving Scheme. Information about both of these is available on
the notice stand in the south porch
Our biggest expense is the Parish Share, which funds both ministry here
at St Faith’s and in the wider Church of England.
Although we are on budget, the budget is for an £18,000 deficit. In other words, we think our expenses will be £18,000 more than our
income this year. This is because as a church community we continue to
not give enough to fund the life of our church.

the ordination of priests and

services - and he also led the

Message from Steve and Jayne Dent Thank you so much for the amazing 'last lunch', as well as all of your kind
words and very generous gift. Jayne and I plan to buy two new priest stoles
and garden furniture as a reminder of St Faith’s; such a wonderful church
family to be part of. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers.
God bless you all, Steve and Jayne

Live Nativity & Christmas Fayre in December This year we are planning on doing
something a little different with the
Christmas Fayre. In addition to some of
our usual Christmas Fayre stalls, we are
going to hold a Live Nativity. This has live
animals with Mary and Joseph, and a
journey in which guests encounter adults
dressed as shepherds, angels, and finally,
wise men on camels, each with a witty
script and plenty of banter.
This will be an opportunity to engage
people who don’t normally come to
church with the Christmas story, and
is very successful in other places. We
want to do this, because while anyone
can put on a Christmas Fayre, our
unique message as a church is the
birth of Jesus, and we want to talk
about this more.
We are in the early stages of planning
for this, but we think the Live Nativity
will take place in the church, with refreshments and stalls in the Bulson Hall, at the
end of the Fayre.
We have applied to the Mission Opportunities Fund from the Diocese, and have
been granted £1,225 to help with the start-up costs of the Live Nativity, which is
wonderful.
We are looking to form a team of people to organise the Live Nativity
and Christmas Fair. If you would be interested in helping, then please let
Mary Kells know (her details are on the back of the Notes).
The Live Nativity and Christmas Fair will be
on Sunday 8th December, 1.00 - 4.00pm.
That morning we will hold the 8.00am and
9.30am services, and then it will be all hands
on deck for setting up the Live Nativity in the
church, ready for 1pm.
Please pray for this exciting new venture, and
get involved if you can.

Parish Centre update As you may know, the PCC have plans to do more with the Parish Centre in
the coming years. The Centre has been in existence for neatry 20 years, and
it’s time for an upgrade! We would love the Centre to be used more, and in
new ways, by our community. As part of this, we plan to:
Install a projection system into the Bulson Hall and start a community
cinema Install a bar in the Centre foyer so we can better cater for parties (the
Bulson Hall is the biggest space for parties in Lee!)
Upgrade the Bulson kitchen air extraction system, to meet current
regulations
Install a screen and sound in the Lowry Room, so it can better be used for
meetings and events
Replace the worn out signs by the south porch, and put new signs on the
south east and south west corners of the Square, so people know what
our buildings are (not everyone does!)
We also need to brick up an old window in the Lowry Room which is
letting in water, and put in a new loft hatch to the Lowry Room loft.
We will give you more information about these exciting plans in the weeks
ahead!
