MONDAY’S GAMES

HAMPTON have made an impressive start to their bid to regain Conference South status at the first attempt. They have scored only five goals in four games but, coupled with an unblemished defensive record, they have been worth ten points and, now, first place in the Ryman Premier table.

They moved to the head of affairs today (Monday) with a 1-0 home victory over Thurrock. Charlie Moone got the decisive goal seven minutes before the break.

Lowestoft forfeited their 100 per cent record at Margate, where they led at half-time but were beaten 2-1. Jack Defty’s 41

st-minute goal was wiped out by Tommy Whitnell on the hour and Sam Long hit the winner five minutes

later.

Kingstonian are up to third after netting three unanswered goals at Concord. They took command with two goals in as many minutes either side of the half-hour mark from Andre McCollin and Matt Pattison, with McCollin striking again in the 64

th minute.

Tom Bullard became the first player to score against Canvey this season and his 34th-minute goal was enough to

give Bury a 1-0 home victory which lifted them to fourth spot.

Wingate collected their first points of the season, also with a 1-0 home win. Carshalton were the victims thanks to Leon Smith’s strike on the hour.

The fourth such result in the division came at Lewes, who recorded their first victory at the expense of Wealdstone. A Karl Beckford penalty nine minutes from time settled the issue.

Hastings were yet another team to come out on top with a lone goal, in their case away from home at Harrow. Brad Goldberg was the marksman soon after the interval.

Enfield Town defender Mark Kirby continued his goalscoring form with a 14th-minute opener at Met Police. Ty Smith equalised on 23 minutes and Howard Newton put the Met ahead five minutes before half-time, only for Neil Johnston to reply immediately. Four goals in the first half, none in the second, and it finished 2-2.

Cray took a third-minute lead through Mark Willy at East Thurrock, who made it 1-1 through Reiss Gilbey in the 55

th minute.

It was the same scoreline at Leiston, who are still seeking their maiden Premier victory. Danny Thrower’s goal in the 69

th minute threatened to break that duck, but Steve Harper replied for Bognor with nine minutes left.

There were no goals at Whitehawk, a result which leaves visitors Hendon propping up the table.

SATURDAY’S ACTION

WILL it be third time lucky for Lowestoft? Beaten in the last two play-off finals, the Trawlerboys were the only Ryman Premier team with a 100 per cent record after their 2-1 home victory over Met Police on Saturday.

Two goals in four minutes soon after half-time seemed to have set up a comfortable victory, Lee Smith provided the corner from which Jack Defty headed the opener and added the second himself. Police skipper Steve Sutherland was sent off with five minutes left, but a minute later home keeper Jake Jessup was given his marching orders after conceding a penalty. Midfielder Michael Frew went between the posts and saved Ty Smith’s kick. He was beaten by Staforde Palmer two minutes into added time but the Trawlerboys had done enough.

At the other end of the table, Wingate were the only side without a point, though even the home supporters at Hastings were left wondering why. Zac Attwood scored for the hosts against the run of play midway through the first half, with Leon Smith levelling matters five minutes before half-time. Player-manager Sean Ray headed Hastings back into the lead after 56 minutes and unlucky Wingate could not avert a 2-1 defeat.

Kingstonian fans were treated to their second six-goal show of the week at Kingsmeadow as K’s followed up Monday’s 4-2 win over Harrow by coming from behind to draw 3-3 with Margate. Sam Long’s 25-yarder gave the visitors an early lead and they went on to dominate the first half with Tommy Whitnell striking twice, either side of

Gary MacDonald’s header for K’s, to make it 3-1 after only 27 minutes. Andre McCollin’s goal three minutes after the interval was the spur K’s required and they had the upper hand the rest of the way, grabbing a point with a Kieran Murphy header six minutes from time.

Two promoted sides clashed at Donkey Lane and Enfield Town must have fancied their chances of recording their third straight win when Whitehawk’s Joe Keehan was dismissed for handball as early as the 14

th minute and

Liam Hope converted the penalty. But they were stunned in the final minute of the first half as Josh Jones and Scott McGleish fired a quickfire double for the Sussex side, who clinched a 3-1 victory with another from Jones in the 75

th minute. The kick-off had been delayed for 15 minutes by the same traffic problems that prevented

Hartlepool getting to Leyton Orient at all, and there was a further 30-minute hold-up in second half for an injury to Hawks defender Sami El-Abd, who clashed heads with teammate Mark Knee.

Bognor were the third Sussex side to win, beating East Thurrock 1-0 in the battle of the Rocks. The visitors deserved better but Kris Newby was twice denied by the woodwork and Ben Johnson’s tap-in soon after the interval was enough for the hosts.

Lewes were unable to complete a clean sweep for the south coast county, going down 2-0 at Thurrock. It was a morale-boosting result for Mark Stimson’s men, who had been heavily beaten in their first two outings. Perhaps it should have happened again, but Lewes wasted a host of first-half chances and found themselves behind to Shamir Mulling’s header just before the break. That boosted the confidence of the home side and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead in the 75

th minute, a long-range strike by Lewis Perkins.

Concord were another side to break their duck. Jason Hallett’s chip gave them the lead midway through the first half of an uninspiring game at Carshalton. Lewis Taylor’s 20-yard shot put the Robins on terms with 15 minutes left but Danny Spendlove replied immediately to earn Concord a 2-1 victory.

Hendon, too, got off the mark thanks to a Howard Hall double which gave them a 2-2 home draw against Bury. He fired the hosts into a deserved lead after 21 minutes but Allicion Blake soon replied and a 43rd-minute penalty by Billy Clark gave the visitors a half-time edge. Marcus Garnham pulled off two good saves to keep Hendon at bay but with 13 minutes left he could only parry a fierce free-kick and Hall picked up the pieces.

Wealdstone have played all their three games at home and have collected seven points, their latest three from a 2-0 win over promoted Leiston who have only one goal and one point so far. Richard Jolly for once failed to score, though he went close on several occasions, and it was left to Scott Fitzgerald and Tom Pett to find the target on 41 and 69 minutes. The kick-off had been delayed for 15 minutes after heavy rain flooded part of the pitch.

Cray collected their first three-point haul of the season, beating Harrow more comfortably than the 2-1 scoreline suggests. Gareth Williams opened the scoring on 34 minutes and Leigh Bremner claimed his 101

midway through the second half. The visitors managed a 90th-minute consolation from Jaakim Ehui.

Two sides who had yet to concede a goal met at Canvey, and both maintained that record while dropping their first points. Visitors Hampton were unable to capitalise on the 68

th-minute dismissal of James Hawes.

North

THE top two sides in Ryman North clashed on Monday and they retain their positions after a 1-1 draw. Grays thought they were going to take over the leadership and keep their 100 per cent record after Jack West’s tenth-minute strike, but visiting Chatham stayed in first place thanks to an added-time leveller by Jack Pallen.

Maldon are level on points with the leading pair, making it 13 goals in three days as they beat Soham 4-1 to follow up Saturday’s 9-1 FA Cup win. The action started with three goals in four minutes just before the half-hour, Dave Wareham and Mitchell Das putting the hosts 2-0 up before Dan Cotton hit back. That was it until the 80

th

minute, when James Robinson restored the two-goal margin, and Joe Gardner added the fourth.

Tilbury fans have fared almost as well over the weekend, watching their favourites ripple the net on 11 occasions. Today they enjoyed a 6-1 victory over Ware, who slumped to the foot of the table. Martin Llewellyn scored the only goal of the first half but Tilbury took control after the break. Tom Wraight got their second, Danny Francis added two in five minutes, taking his weekend haul to five, and Llewellyn netted his second before Michael Akande managed a late Ware consolation. Dockers, though, had the last word as Emiel Aiken completed the six-hit in added time.

Harlow supporters, on the other hand, have not enjoyed themselves, twice seeing their team go down 2-1 at home after taking the lead. Today it was Fernando Manuel who put them in front after 44 minutes. But Dave Bryant replied for Sudbury in the fifth minute of added time and the pre-season promotion favourites clinched their first points of the season through Ben Bowditch seven minutes after the break.

Newcomers Wroxham and their visitors, Waltham Forest, also picked up their first points after a 3-3 draw. It looked good for the hosts when a Matt Blake double gave them a 2-0 half-time lead. Forest hit back with two

goals in the first three minutes after the break, Manu Dagher and Luke Stanley the marksmen. Worse followed for Wroxham as Claudio Langlois was sent off and Courtney White put the visitors ahead in the 61

st minute. But the

Yachtsmen salvaged that first point with a Josh Carus effort 11 minutes from time.

Witham’s 100 per cent record vanished in the second half at Waltham Abbey. James Peagram broke the deadlock in the 51

st minute, Ayrton Coley quickly added another and Peagram wrapped up a 3-0 victory in the

last minute.

Second-half goals did it for Romford, too. Hussain Isa’s 53rd

minute penalty and Toran Senghore’s injury-time goal earned them a 2-0 victory at Ilford.

The other four scheduled games in the division were postponed because of FA Cup replays.

South

CRAWLEY DOWN continued their perfect start to the Ryman South season with a 3-1 home win over Dulwich in Monday’s battle of the top two in the table. The Anvils, who have scored 12 goals in their three league games, were well worth their success.

Gabriel Odunaike became the first player to breach the Dulwich defence this season in the 29th

minute. His example was followed nine minutes later by Jamie Cade. Carl Wilson-Denis pulled one back on 55 minutes but Ross Morley quickly restored the two-goal margin.

Stuart King’s hat-trick maintained Folkestone’s 100 per cent record and lifted them into second place with a 3-1 victory at Chipstead. King scored after 24 and 35 minutes, and that was it until eight minutes from time, when Rob Watkins gave Chips some hope. But King had the last word in the 88

th minute.

Herne Bay collected their second away victory despite conceding a seventh-minute goal at Eastbourne, where Danny Curd was on the mark. The home side held their lead for an hour but were then hit by three goals in ten minutes from Josh Sargeant, James Campbell and Andy Irvine. Ben Billings reduced the arrears deep into added time and the Kent newcomers won 3-2.

Hythe came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Burgess Hill. An early own goal by Nick Reeves gave the Hillians a boost and Ryan McBride doubled their lead in the 56

th minute. Nick Barnes pulled one back a minute

later and Craig Thompson squared it in the 75th

minute.

Worthing picked up their first points with a 2-0 home victory over Maidstone. Scott Tipper put them ahead in the 66

th minute, his fourth goal of the weekend, and Nick Sullivan made sure with a minute to go.

A Graeme Purdy penalty two minutes from time was enough to give Walton & Hersham all three points at home to Merstham.

Faversham pulled off a 2-1 success at Tooting, Adrian Stone getting their winner five minutes after the break. Ashley Brown had put them ahead midway through the first half and Tooting drew level six minutes later with a Lee Hall penalty.

Two other matches were postponed because of FA Cup replays.

WHO said history doesn’t repeat itself? A year ago Ryman North club Maldon & Tiptree hammered nine goals past Ipswich Wanderers in the preliminary round of the FA Cup – and on Saturday they did it again, crushing hapless Essex Senior League visitors London APSA 9-1.

Maldon manager Terry Spillane was the Redbridge boss when they reached the second round proper last season – and two of the men who have moved with him shared the five first-half goals. James Robinson started the rout with goals in the 10

th and 12th minutes, Ben Bradbury struck after 25 and 34, and Robinson completed

his hat-trick with a 36th

-minute penalty. The visitors managed to pull one back but Jamie Guy then fired a five-minute hat-trick, including a penalty, early in the second half. Jack Gardner made it nine with 18 minutes left but APSA managed to avert a double-figure scoreline.

Maybe there’s something in the water in that part of Essex, for Maldon’s local rivals Witham almost matched them with an 8-1 romp at Great Yarmouth. Such an outcome hardly looked likely when Yarmouth’s Adam Clarke scored after 50 minutes to wipe out Billy Hunt’s 10

th-minute opener. The equaliser served only to provoke the

visitors and within four minutes they were 4-1 up as Hunt, Rob Whitnell and Tom Devaux all found the net.

Devaux added another, Joe Ilett made it six and, in the dying minutes, Whitnell, with a penalty, and Ryan Imbert completed the haul.

A third Essex club among the goals were Brentwood, who hit six without reply at Halstead. Abs Thompson opened their account in the second minute and Steve Butterworth added another after 25 minutes, then netted his fourth of the season immediately after the interval. Frank Everett, Sherwin Stanley and Alex Read doubled the tally.

Just over the Suffolk border, Needham Market also hit six, though visitors Gorleston managed two in reply. Jack Wilkinson, Sam Newson and James Hubbard made it 3-0 by the 34

th minute. Hubbard grabbed his second on the

hour, the first of three goals in two minutes as Gorleston pulled one back and Kieran Leabon notched Needham’s fifth. Hubbard them completed his hat-trick, his fifth goal in as many days.

Three sides rattled up 5-1 home victories over Step 5 opposition, notably Soham whose success against Burnham Ramblers was their first in the FA Cup for five years. Rob Mason, Dan Cotton and Mason again put them three up in 27 minutes. Ramblers replied just after that but Cotton netted again on the hour and the splendidly-named Buster Harradine completed the nap hand in the last minute.

Tilbury found themselves a goal down to visiting Brantham after half an hour but a Danny Francis penalty and a Jack Carlile strike turned it round before the interval. It was still anyone’s game until Martin Llewellyn put Dockers 3-1 ahead in the 85

th minute and there was still time for Francis to complete his hat-trick, including another

penalty in added time.

Scott Tipper’s hat-trick led Worthing to a 5-1 home win over Rye. Mike Huckett put Rebels ahead on 15 minutes only for the county league side to hit back five minutes later. Tipper restored the advantage on 37 minutes and grabbed his second midway through the second half. Huckett and Tipper were on target again in the last ten minutes.

Another hat-trick hero was Chipstead’s Adam Fletcher as they beat former Ryman club Crowborough 5-2 on the Surrey Downs. He scored after 15 minutes but the visitors replied eight minutes later and it was still 1-1 at half-time. Goals from Luke Coleman and Fabian Batchelor soon after the restart put Chips in command and Fletcher got his second before Crowborough made it 4-2. Fletcher put it beyond doubt with 25 minutes left.

Two other clubs reached the five-goal mark in all-Ryman ties. Sudbury’s 5-0 home win over Ilford was not as decisive as it sounds, for four of the goals did not arrive until the last 11 minutes even though Ilford went down to ten men in the 37

th minute when Tony Dawkins was given his marching orders for upending Ben Smith and Lee

Boylan made the most of the resulting penalty. Smith played the major part in the second goal on 79 minutes with a shot that hit a post and cannoned into the net off keeper Dan Mbaku. Boylan added the third and Tom Webb netted twice in the last three minutes.

Walton & Hersham scored five times away from home for the second successive Saturday and their 5-1 success at Merstham also avenged their 2-1 defeat on the same ground in last season’s competition. Ashley Quashie set them on their way in the third minute and Graeme Purdy added another before Dean Gunner replied on the half-hour. Phil Williams restored the two-goal gap on 56 minutes and the Swans wrapped it up with late strikes by Dave Lawrence and Martin Grant.

The joint leaders of Ryman South had differing fortunes against teams from their own division. A lone goal by Kalvin Morath-Gibbs midway through the second half was enough for Dulwich to beat visitors Hythe, but Crawley Down went down 3-1 at home to Tooting. Lee Hall put the Terrors ahead on 24 minutes and Sol Pinnock added another ten minutes after the interval. A Jamie Cade penalty put the Anvils back in it with plenty of time to go but Hall clinched it in the 90

th minute with his second of the afternoon.

Another all-Ryman South tie was at Herne Bay, where the league newcomers went down 3-1 to Folkestone. Two former Herne Bay players and one current one were on target for the visitors. Stuart King put them one up on 27 minutes, Darren Marsden converted a penalty in the 38

th minute and Joe Nelder contributed an own goal soon

after half-time. Andy Irvine pulled one back but that was all.

Cheshunt forfeited a 2-0 half-time lead and will have to make the short trip to Ryman North neighbours Potters Bar for a replay on Tuesday. Goals by Joe Clemo and Jason Mason in the latter stages of the first half put the Scholars in trouble but Anton Agdomar pulled one back on the hour and free-scoring James Gershfield followed up his own saved penalty to square matters with ten minutes left.

The other all-Ryman tie was at Walton Casuals, where Thamesmead took a 25th

-minute lead through Sean Roberts. But they will also have to try again on Tuesday, on the same ground, after a downpour at half-time prevented further play.

A number of Ryman sides suffered disappointing exits at the hands of opposition from lower in the pyramid, most notably, perhaps, Redbridge, whose achievement in reaching the second round proper last season must have seemed a very distant memory as they crashed 5-0 at AFC Dunstable.

Burgess Hill went down 3-0 at home to Step 6 club Littlehampton and there was another surprise as Harlow, despite taking a tenth-minute lead through new signing Tony Jacobs, were beaten 2-1 at home by Hadleigh.

Corinthian-Casuals were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline at Redhill and Whitstable were beaten 2-1 at VCD. The Kent League side took the lead midway through the first half but Micheal Everitt squared it just before the hour, amid thunder and lightning. A replay was two minutes away when Billy Shinners got VCD’s winner.

The only other Ryman side to bow out were Ramsgate, who crashed 5-2 at Godalming. The Surrey club, who were transferred to the Southern League in the summer, showed they had lost none of the touch they showed in their thrilling 44 draw at Bognor in last season’s play-offs as Scott Harris fired a hat-trick. G’s were 2-0 up before Charles Walsh scored for the visitors in the 36

th minute, and Michael Yianni pulled it back to 3-2 on the hour.

The two sides sharing top spot in Ryman North had to fight hard to progress. Chatham were in some trouble at home to Peacehaven when they fell behind with 20 minutes left but hit back to win 2-1. Lee Hales equalised with a 76

th-minute penalty and Jack Pallen struck six minutes later. Grays, meanwhile, were made to fight all the way

by Essex Senior League visitors Takeley and could not add to Jack West’s 12th

-minute goal.

Another Essex League side, Haringey & Waltham Development, led Waltham Abbey at half-time and almost held on for a replay after James Peagram equalised on the hour. Ayrton Coley saw the Abbotts through with an 86

th-minute goal.

A Hicham Akhazzan double put Sittingbourne 2-0 ahead at home to Burnham but no massacre followed. Kieran Knight, well known in Ryman circles, replied on 32 minutes and the Brickies had to settle for a 2-1 victory.

Wroxham accounted for the side they replaced in Ryman North, Great Wakering, with a 2-0 win in Norfolk. Both goals came in the first half, a Matt Daniels penalty and Matt Blake added another before half-time.

Two goals in the last five minutes of the first half, from Jordan Cox and Ricky Edwards, eased Aveley’s nerves at Whitton. A late strike by Junior Appiah made it 3-0.

Another big crowd at Maidstone, 938, had a shock when Colliers Wood took a tenth-minute lead. Ade Olorunda replied six minutes later, after which the visitors held out until the 57

th minute when Paul Booth put Stones in

front. Highly-rated youngster Kaiyne Woollery and Shaun Welford completed a 4-1 win: not quite as emphatic as last season, when Stones hit nine in each of their first two ties.

Faversham cruised to a 3-0 home win over Ringmer with goals from Luke Harvey, Adrian Stone and Matt Bourne, while Eastbourne saw off Chessington 2-0 with an early goal from Danny Curd and a late one from Matt Geard. Louis Rose scored the only goal to see Ware through at Biggleswade United.

Horsham must replay after a narrow escape against visitors Raynes Park Vale. Gary Charman’s solo goal wiped out the visitors’ opener but they went in front again and only three minutes were left when Tony Nwachukwu’s penalty made it 2-2 and gave Hornets a second chance.

Leatherhead took the lead through Jamie Coyle after 80 scoreless minutes at Horley only for the home side to reply almost at once and force a return match on Wednesday.

Heybridge and Felixstowe meet again on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw in Suffolk. Heybridge looked on their way out, but 86

th-minute substitute Ashley Cole saved them in the third minute of added time.

Three Bridges joined the casualty list on Sunday despite taking the lead at Epsom. Callum Donaghey scored for Bridges in the 20

th minute but the homeless Combined Counties League side, who now share Chipstead’s

ground, hit back 12 minutes later and netted the winner with 20 minutes left.
