Thankfully, though, Ayckbourne treats this familiar and depressing topic with a general levity that makes the subject more than bearable, creating a farce laced with a dose of grimness that nobody can fail to relate to. In this production by the City of Oxford Theatre Guild (Oxford’s largest company of non-professional players) we are witness to the three-day Christmas from hell at the home of the not-so-young couple Belinda and Neville. This is just the first of many depressingly accurate depictions of a classic stale relationship - Neville’s grunts in response to his wife’s nagging are those of a true married man. Each successive character seems more desperate than the last, from the pathetic mouse-secretary sister down to the gin-sodden, purple-clad, bottle-blonde sister-in-law, Phyllis; all are stuck in a mire of sexual boredom, desperate flirtation and overdue revelations of self-inadequacy. The acting is consistent, with occasional flair (Colin Davidsons was remarkable as the dead-weight loser, Eddie), and the sparkling one-liners are delivered with gusto. The rosy-warm set, too, is perfectly pitched - it builds an atmosphere of a contented, Ella Fitzgerald-soaked, ideal Christmas, that is systematically shattered as the play progresses. The slightly stilted pace of the production, and its rather limping flow, might perhaps have been rectified by some malicious editing; for, as in all plays that deal with the deadliness of strained relationships and the excruciating tedium of a family reunion, there is a risk of so convincing the audience of its horror that they, too, want to escape. Thankfully, however, the farcical edge strikes back to raise us from the brink and keep the audience in their seats. This is the last vestiges of your childhood white Christmas laid bare - the myth of warm cheer and seasonal goodwill finally condemned to its grave. And if you can’t spot at least three of your own extended family members here, then you are a very, very lucky person indeed. It’s been thought out right down to the smallest details: the set, the programme and the gifts are all just right, and the talented cast brings the whole thing to life. Christopher Scott is superb as the man- hunting, none-too-attractive Widow Twankey, whose constant sneezing provides ample opportunity for shouting “Hanky Twankey!” Neil Rutherford is Wishee Washee, Twankey’s son, entertaining in his own right and an excellent partner to Scott. Both have distinctly different and equally amusing facial expressions, and they play off each other and to the audience with experienced finesse. One request: the slapstick scene needs to be a little less cautious - we want the gunge to go in somebody’s face, please! The Slave of the Ring and the Genie of the Lamp are also excellent. Perfect contrasts, they work well both as a pair and individually. Kali Peacock’s humour is so natural as she performs the glitzy, blond Slave of the Ring, always entering the stage to the sound of running footsteps that she can never quite synchronise herself with. Stuart Pendred looms menacingly on his stilts as the austere genie of the lamp, whose deep voice echoes around the auditorium; as he grants wishes, fire shoots from his fingertips. I could go on, but really, the whole cast are excellent. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are good and the lovers in love (aaaaaaahhh). Backed by the colourful and ever-changing set, their teamwork ensures that there is never a dull moment. Aladdin is a show for the whole family. The songs are drawn from children’s cartoons, recent chart hits and old musical favourites; everybody should be able to find something they can sing along to. And while you jig in your seat, the actors perform wonderfully varied dance routines on stage. It is a shame that the main audience- participation number is so very nonsensical and tuneless, but this doesn’t stop you bellowing it out anyway! The programme is packed with games that will vex the minds of young and old alike. And parents, guard your wallets - Wishee Washee’s gift shop lurks in the foyer, packed with sparkling temptations. Colourful, well thought out, well produced and superbly performed, Aladdin is a first rate example of the great pantomime tradition. Buy your tickets now; whoever you are, you will find something to entertain you. THEATRE REVIEW

If you are not yet in the festive spirit for a (rapidly looming) Christmas, then this play from Alan Ayckbourne will remind you of what this seasonalcelebration is all about: gruelling family reunions and strained friendships, itseems. Thankfully, though, Ayckbourne treats this familiar and depressing topicwith a general levity that makes the subject more than bearable, creating a farcelaced with a dose of grimness that nobody can fail to relate to.

In this production by the City of Oxford Theatre Guild (Oxford’s largest companyof non-professional players) we are witness to the three-day Christmas from hell at the home ofthe not-so-young couple Belinda and Neville. This is just the first of many depressingly accuratedepictions of a classic stale relationship - Neville’s grunts in response to his wife’s nagging arethose of a true married man. Each successive character seems more desperate than the last, from the pathetic mouse-secretary sister down to the gin-sodden, purple-clad, bottle-blondesister-in-law, Phyllis; all are stuck in a mire of sexual boredom, desperate flirtation and overduerevelations of self-inadequacy. The acting is consistent, with occasional flair (Colin Davidsonswas remarkable as the dead-weight loser, Eddie), and the sparkling one-liners are delivered with

gusto. The rosy-warm set, too, is perfectly pitched - it builds an atmosphere of acontented, Ella Fitzgerald-soaked, ideal Christmas, that is systematically shattered as

the play progresses. The slightly stilted pace of the production, and its rather limping flow, might

perhaps have been rectified by some malicious editing; for, as in all plays that dealwith the deadliness of strained relationships and the excruciating tedium of a familyreunion, there is a risk of so convincing the audience of its horror that they, too, want

to escape. Thankfully, however, the farcical edge strikes back to raise us fromthe brink and keep the audience in their seats. This is the lastvestiges of your childhood white Christmas laid bare - the myth ofwarm cheer and seasonal goodwill finally condemned to its grave.

And if you can’t spot at least three of your own extended familymembers here, then you are a very, very lucky person indeed.

Once again, Michele Hardy hasproduced a first class pantomime for thePlayhouse - Oh yes she has! It’s beenthought out right down to the smallestdetails: the set, the programme and thegifts are all just right, and the talentedcast brings the whole thing to life.Christopher Scott is superb as the man-hunting, none-too-attractive WidowTwankey, whose constant sneezing providesample opportunity for shouting “HankyTwankey!” Neil Rutherford is WisheeWashee, Twankey’s son, entertaining in hisown right and an excellent partner to Scott. Both have distinctly different and equallyamusing facial expressions, and they playoff each other and to the audience withexperienced finesse. One request: theslapstick scene needs to be a little lesscautious - we want the gunge to go insomebody’s face, please!

The Slave of the Ring and the Genieof the Lamp are also excellent. Perfect

contrasts, they work well both as a pair andindividually. Kali Peacock’s humour is sonatural as she performs the glitzy, blondSlave of the Ring, always entering the stageto the sound of running footsteps that shecan never quite synchronise herself with.Stuart Pendred looms menacingly on hisstilts as the austere genie of the lamp, whose deep voice echoes around theauditorium; as he grants wishes, fire shootsfrom his fingertips. I could go on, but really, the whole cast are excellent. The bad guysare bad, the good guys are good and thelovers in love (aaaaaaahhh). Backed by thecolourful and ever-changing set, theirteamwork ensures that there is never a dullmoment.

Aladdin is a show for the wholefamily. The songs are drawn from children’scartoons, recent chart hits and old musicalfavourites; everybody should be able tofind something they can sing along to. Andwhile you jig in your seat, the actors performwonderfully varied dance routines on stage. It is a shame that the main audience-participation number is so very nonsensicaland tuneless, but this doesn’t stop youbellowing it out anyway! The programme ispacked with games that will vex the mindsof young and old alike. And parents, guardyour wallets - Wishee Washee’s gift shoplurks in the foyer, packed with sparklingtemptations. Colourful, well thought out, well produced and superbly performed,Aladdin is a first rate example of the greatpantomime tradition. Buy your tickets now;whoever you are, you will find something toentertain you.
