Mr. Achs’ Class Takes Action Against Hunger in the QC After giving a class on Economic Challenges (Ch13) in America, we discussed how even in times of prosperity, unemployment, inflation, and poverty can affect large numbers of Americans. Despite the success of the American economy, millions of people remain poor.We looked at some dismal statistics from the 2012 HHS Poverty Guidelines. The students asked what the class could do to help. We decided to make sandwiches and give them to the homeless. Students donated $, and I covered the overage. We got into groups of four, made a production line, and made 360 bread, butter, cheese, and bologna sandwiches. Using a contact at St. Anthony’s in Davenport, we donated the food there.

West’s Hunger Drive Makes a Stop in Walcott West High’s Student Senate, cheerleaders, and drumline dropped in on Walcott students to enlist their help with the Quad City Student Hunger Drive. Future Falcons were riveted by the cheers, stunts, and drumline. Four teams of seventh and eighth graders played Hungry Hippo to gear up to collect cans at Walcott. Thanks for the help, Future Falcons! You were an awesome audience. To see all the photos, click here.
