Certainly, the surprise announce-ment at the just ended Paris Air Show was the very unexpected order by the International Airline Group (IAG), which owns carriers including British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus, for 200 737-Max aircraft.

Without necessar-ily referring to the ‘Max’ in its word-ing, IAG says the mix of 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft would be delivered between 2023 and 2027 and would be powered by CFM Leap engines. It is anticipated that the aircraft would be used by several of the Group’s airlines including Vueling,

craft will make a successful return to service in the coming months having received approval from the regulators”.

However, the deal has come as a surprise consider-ing the global Max fleet is still ground-ed following the fatal crash of two jetliners, and modi-fications to its soft-ware are ongoing. Airbus has reacted

strongly at the surprise announce-ment and not surprisingly, due to the fact that IAG airlines are pre-dominately A320 family operators and major Airbus customers.

Indigo places US$20 billion LEAP engine order

IndiGo has ordered CFM International LEAP-1A engines to power 280 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. The contract, which includes spare engines and an overhaul support agree-ment, is valued at more than US$20 billion U.S. at list price. To support its new LEAP-1A fleet, In-diGo also signed a long-term Service Agreement. IndiGo has been a CFM customer since 2016 and currently operates a fleet of 17 A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines as part of a total fleet of 215 A320/A321-family aircraft. Delivery of the first LEAP-1A-powered A320neo is sched-uled in 2020.

CFM resolves LEAP backlog but cautious about increasing output

With Boeing reducing its output of the 737 MAX which is powered by CFM LEAP engines, CFM In-ternational has seized the opportunity to wipe out the current backlog of engine deliveries to Boeing. With Boeing reducing MAX output to 42 units per month as opposed to a previous rate of 52 and also deferring a planned increase to 57 units per month, not only has CFM resolved its deliver backlog to Boeing, but it has also closed the gap on engine delays for the Airbus A320neo

Speaking at a final press conference from Le Bourget Airport, Airbus sales executive Scher-er said the European OEM never received a request for proposals — a document that for-mally launches most major aircraft contracts from IAG.

“We are taking the position that we would like

to bid for this business,” Scherer told report-ers. “IAG is a very good customer. Every one of these airlines are A320 operators. Our intent is to bid.”

The surprise announcement came halfway through the Paris Air Show and has certainly helped Boeing clear some of the gloom sur-

rounding the 737 Max by instilling a measure of confidence in its future.

In selecting the 737 MAX, IAG says it will fly a combination of the 737 MAX 8, which seats up to 178 passengers in a two-class configuration, and the larger 737 MAX 10 jet, which can ac-commodate as many as 230 passengers.

United is also committed to improving the entertainment options for customers with disabilities. Earlier this year, the airline began offering a new main menu category on seatback on-demand that is labelled Ac-cessible Entertainment. This new section makes it easier for custom-ers with hearing and vision challenges to find accessible entertainment options, grouping all of the titles that are either audio descriptive or closed captioned in one main menu category. Seatback on-demand is one of United’s entertainment options available on 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft. The carrier currently offers approximately 20 different movies and TV shows that are audio descriptive and more than 50 that

include English closed captioning. Select DIRECTV channels also include closed captioning when the TV station makes it available. United con-tinues to add additional accessible entertainment and screening op-tions across its fleet.

Unique highlights of United’s personal device entertainment program-ming include: an exclusive partnership with VEVO, delivering new, cu-rated music video playlists each month; relaxation content including Headspace, a popular meditation app and Moodica, which takes the brain on a much-needed vacation using videos.

Airbus unveils A321XLR at Paris Air Show – longest-range single-aisle jet airliner

Airbus, whose civil aviation base is at Blagnac, Toulouse, France, has chosen its ‘home’ air-show, the 53rd Paris Air Show, to launch its longest-range single-aisle airliner yet, the A321XLR. This is a long-range version of the already successful A321neo. “We can fly from north-eastern Asia into south Asia, from the Middle East to Bali or from Japan deep into Australia, and so on,” said Airbus chief salesman Christian Scherer. “It is therefore the lowest-risk investment for airlines on these kinds of routes.” Air Lease Corp is the first customer for the new jet, having ordered 27 of the jets as part of a 100-plane deal with Airbus. According to Reuters, Airbus could announce close to 200 orders for the new model at the airshow, with JetBlue Airways Corp and U.S.-based private equity firm Indigo Partners among the buyers. The A321XLR will have a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, which is approximately 15 percent more than the A321LR, and it will now enter the market sector previously tied up by wide-body jets. As a more fuel-efficient aircraft, its arrival comes at a time where carriers are looking to maximize flexibility of single-aisle passenger jets.

which is powered by either the CFM LEAP engine or the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan. Howev-er, with Boeing seeking an optimum output of 57 MAXs per month and Airbus looking to ramp up production of the A320neo from a current 60 air-craft per month to 63, CFM Chief Executive Gael Meheust was more cautious about the engine maker’s capabilities of meeting any increased demand. Commenting on the situation, Meheust said: “We always want to commit on things we are sure we are going to accomplish. We would be very uncomfortable in committing to something that we are not completely sure of, and right now we are not sure that the supply chain is capable of doing more than it is doing today.”

ALC adds five more 787-9s to fleet of 56 Dreamliners

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS Air Lease Corporation signs LoI for 100 Airbus aircraft

Founded in 2010, Los Angeles-based aircraft leasing company, Air Lease Corporation (ALC), has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for 100 Airbus aircraft including, for the first time, 50 A220-300s and 27 A321XLRs. The agreement also includes an incremental order for an additional 23 A321neos. This latest order takes ALC’s cumulative orders to 387 Airbus aircraft, making it Airbus’ third-largest lessor customer. The A220 is the only aircraft purpose built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers unprecedented fuel efficiency and wide-body passenger comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to of-fer at least 20% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. The A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft. With an order book of 536 aircraft as at the end of May 2019, the A220 has all the credentials to win the lion’s share of the 100- to-150-seat aircraft market estimated to represent at least 7,000 aircraft over the next 20 years.

MTU Aero Engines records orders worth more than US$1.3 billion

This year’s aviation industry gathering in Paris ends with an order intake of more than US$1.3 billion (about €1.2 billion; according to list price) for MTU Aero Engines. The or-ders mainly result from orders and memoran-dums of understanding (MoU) for the geared turbofan (GTF) engines of the PW1000G fam-ily for short- and medium-range aircraft. They account for around 95% of the volume dur-ing the Paris Air Show. There was also a com-mitment for the GEnx long-range engine, in which MTU also has a stake. MTU’s most re-cent orders predominantly stem from Airbus aircraft. The largest single order was placed by JetSMART with engines for 85 A320neo Family aircraft. Engines for a further 142 air-craft in this category were ordered by several undisclosed customers. The Mexican airline Viva Aerobus opted for the GTF for 41 A321n-eo aircraft. In addition, SMBC Aviation Capital and Aviation Capital Group each ordered 20 aircraft from this family. The engine selction for the A321XLR long-haul version presented at the Paris Air Show are largely still pending. Only the four aircraft for Middle East Airlines already have GTF engines. The commitments from Air Lease for 50, from Nordic Aviation Capital for 20 and from Delta Airlines for 5 A220 aircraft further strengthen MTU’s order intake. Through its share in the GEnx pro-gram, MTU benefits from the orders for the Boeing 787. Korean Air opted for 30 aircraft of this type.

Qantas backs A321XLR with agreement for 36 aircraft

Australia’s Qantas Airways is backing Airbus’ new extended range A321XLR with an agree-ment covering 36 aircraft. The system enhances the efficiency of lease returns several ways by helping operators harmo-nize and standardize files, perform collaborative document reviews with their lessor partners, and transfer files through an intuitive digital user in-terface which includes SPEC 2500 functionality.

Qantas and GE Aviation have announced plans to develop a new module for FlightPulse™, a digi-tal application to improve safety and operational decision making for airline pilots. This follows the launch of the FlightPulse™ app in 2017, a flight analytics tool which uses recorded aircraft data to enable pilots to securely access their individual operational efficiency metrics and trends after each flight, helping to reduce significant amounts of fuel as well as carbon emissions. The new mod-ule will provide rich historical data for pilots to identify any safety-related or general traffic flow considerations, and help minimize fuel burn, at specific airports or runways. Pilots will be able to access the data before each flight to help with their decision making. The app is currently in the design phase and GE has been working closely with Qantas pilots to understand their needs.

FLYdocs, a global leader in digital aviation records and data management, recently signed a ten-year contract with Regional Jet Center for the ongo-ing management of their aircraft maintenance records across a fleet of 49 aircraft. Regional Jet Center, part of the KLM Group, is a leading MRO for line maintenance on the Embraer 170 and 190 series, and this partnership serves as an im-portant step in strengthening the MRO’s commit-ment to digital innovation. Using the cloud-based FLYdocs® platform, Regional Jet Center will have access to a centralized digital replica of all aircraft technical records – right back to birth.

Boeing will invest US$1 million in Brazil’s efforts to establish a sustainable aviation fuel indus-try. The investment will focus on initiatives that maximize social, economic and environmental benefits to local communities engaged in the de-velopment of feedstock that can be used to pro-duce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In 2018, the company provided an additional US$1 million to the industry’s efforts in Brazil. Boeing will collab-orate with long-time partners World Wide Fund for Nature and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to identify small communi-ties of farmers in Brazil with the most promising potential to provide biomass for SAF production. The producers will then be certified using sus-tainability indicators that drive social benefits such as income generation, solid labor practices and food security. Groups of small farmers that produce sugarcane and macaúba oil in south-east Brazil have already been certified by RSB in recent years, with Boeing’s financial support. In 2013, both the WWF and RSB were stakehold-ers in the development of Flightpath to Aviation. This detailed report, led by Boeing, Embraer and the Sao Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP), outlined the unique opportunities and challenges of creating a cost-effective, bio-derived, and sustainable jet-fuel production and distribution industry in Brazil.

A Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT), in-cluding Belgium, Australia, Malaysia, the Neth-erlands and Ukraine, has identified and charged four men with murder for the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 over rebel-held eastern Ukraine in 2014. Three of the four are Russian nationals – Igor Girkin (also known as Igor Strelkov), Sergey Dubinskiy and Oleg Pu-latov, whilst the fourth person, Leonid Kharch-enko, is a Ukrainian. The trial is set for 2020,

though as Russia does not extradite its nationals for prosecution it is likely the four accused will be in absentia. The trial will probably be held in the Netherlands as that is where the majority of victims came from. It is believed that Girkin was a former colonel in Russia’s FSB intelligence agency and who was the self-declared minister

of defense in the separatist administration in eastern Ukraine. Dubinskiy was a former minis-ter from the Russian military intelligence agen-cy GRU, Pulatov was an ex-soldier in Russia’s Spetznaz special forces unit, and Kharchenko a Ukrainian separatist.
