What is Globalization?

• The idea that national economic, social and political life, in industrialized countries and in “developing” countries, is increasingly affected by what occurs beyond a country’s borders.

Family of Nations Cultural Approach

• Anglo-American family – greater tendency to emphasize the role of the individual (US,UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, Ireland)

• German family – deeply rooted federalist approach to politics whereby collective public policies are more of a possibility (Germany, Austria, Switzerland)

• Latin family – historical tradition of support for powerful central gov’t & accompanying social services (France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal)

• Scandinavian family – more collectivist in social norms (Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden)
