BEHOLD, O good and sweetest Jesus, I cast myself upon my knees in Thy sight, and with the most fervent desire of my soul I pray and beseech Thee to impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a most firm desire of amendment: whilst with deep affection and grief of soul I consider within myself and mentally contemplate Thy five most precious Wounds, having before mine eyes that which David, the prophet, long ago spoke in Thine Own person concern-ing Thee, my Jesus: They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones [Psalm 21, 17, 18].

Dear Friends, Faced with the dignity and sacredness of life and of the human person, as we acknowledge that man is great and is truly made for great things. As social creatures, we long and need to belong to something beyond ourselves – seeking to procure a common good for all. We have a need to understand our humanity in order to form our hearts and minds towards true greatness. When we lose sight of our (and others’) dignity or even when we are less secure in it, our souls can become flat—our hearts become weak and timid, our minds become small and short-sighted, and we seek out the need for belonging or to “fit in.” We can often find ourselves wanting to belong to something that is exclusive and appreciated. Naturally, we should find this within our families, but fallen short of that we seek this out socially – for example, friends at school, school groups, work groups, parish groups/ministries, recreational clubs, etc. Such groups are certainly an integral part of social life; it is where some truly great innovations occur and we perpetuate timeless traditions. United by a singular mission or common bond, groups are able to develop particular arts and sciences, prolong the treasures of a given culture, and provide important ministries and works of service. However, there is a temptation within this, especially when the individuals of the group their own or others’ dignity, because it can over-emphasize the need for belonging and limit their happiness to what Aristotle calls “felix or comparative happiness.” (See also, the Four Levels of Happiness from Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ) This is an easy temptation, when either the group has lost sight of its end (purpose) or the members have lost sight of their own (know, love, serve God). What can set in are some undesirable formulae: “we are better than they = happy” or “they have more than me = unhappiness.” And this kind of happiness will always involve competition and can explain why we sometimes in our lives we are unable to abandon such things as: cliques, gossip, making fun of others, resentment & envy. The person or the group is seen not in terms of personal dignity or contributing to the common good but as a competitor in “the comparison game.” We must be on guard about this because our own good intentions can oftentimes deceive us into neglect. As St. John Chrysostom explains it our negligence rather than intentional malice is oftentimes the cause of our sinfulness. (Cf., Homilies on Genesis, no. 16) We allow ourselves to be seduced by evil, because we are caught up in and concerned about everything and everyone but the one thing necessary. St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a Cistercian from the 11th Century, helps us to put all of this in its proper perspective. Ultimately, he is saying whether we are in groups or out of groups, alone or amidst a multitude we must have on our minds, hearts, and lips solely God. He advises all of us by saying: “you must withdraw, mentally rather than physically, in your intention, in your devotion, in your spirit. Apart from that the only solitude prescribed for you is that of the mind and spirit. You enjoy this solitude if you refuse to share in the common gossip, if you shun involvement in the problems of the hour and set no store by the fancies that attract the masses; if you reject what everybody covets, avoid disputes, make light of losses, and pay no heed to injuries. Otherwise you are not alone even when alone. Do you not see that you can be alone when in company and in company when alone? However great the crowds that surround you, you can enjoy the benefits of solitude if you refrain from curiosity about other people's conduct and shun rash judgment. Even if you should see your neighbor doing what is wrong, refuse to pass judgment on him, excuse him instead. Excuse his intention even if you cannot excuse the act, which may be the fruit of ignorance or surprise or chance.” (Commentary on the Song of Songs, Sermon 40) Let us not see others as objects for gain to be used and bartered for my happiness or to be struck down as an obstacle that prevents it, but as a person whose face I look at and discover that they have an immortal soul, they have a life and a history, hopes and fears, gifts and defects, and that God loves this person as much as he loves myself. Are You a Registered Parishioner?

If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

3 main reasons why registering is important:

1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.

2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether

you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process.

3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment,

scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.

Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding

preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.

Those responsible for the spiritual and material goods of the Church are entrusted with the stewardship of oth-ers’ gifts, and are ultimately responsible to the Lord. As a faithful steward, the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and ethics. The mission of the Church re-quires no less.

To this end, the Diocese of San Jose has partnered with EthicsPoint to provide a confidential method to hear suggestions, concerns or reports of financial misconduct. The EthicsPoint Hotline (1-888-325-7863) allows parishioners, volunteers, employees, vendors and others to make confidential reports regarding the mismanagement of parish or school property, cash and all other assets. Reportable are also issues of apparent disregard of policies pertaining to the proper management of these assets. Suspected unethical behavior by employees, volunteers, staff, trustees, officers, directors, agents or contractors of the Di-ocese should also be made to EthicsPoint. All reports may be made anonymously.

It is the hope of the Diocese that EthicsPoint will assist in the protection of all who interact with the parishes, schools, chancery and other diocesan agencies. EthicsPoint accepts reports of financial misconduct through its website or its Hotline: 1-888-325-7863. A complete report will be made to diocesan leadership, so that leader-ship may review and provide feedback and resolution for the issues that are reported.

Mass Request Guidelines It has been tradition in the Church that priests are asked to offer a Holy Mass for the specific intention. Maybe someone in the family is sick, or perhaps you want to remember a special occasion such as a birthday or wedding anniversary; the Holy Mass is a wonderful and most powerful prayer. St. Anselm states: “A single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death.” Here at Our Lady of Peace we are truly blessed to have the Holy Mass celebrated at least 30 times a week with each of those masses holding the intentions of the faithful. Started last quarter, we now have COLLECTIVE MASS INTEN-TIONS for the 8 am Holy Mass Monday—Saturday. Collective Masses may have more than one person requesting/donating for that particular mass and, in no way, diminishes the effectiveness of the mass request. We in the office understand that we have been making changes and this can cause confusion. But our intention is to always be improving our system along the lines of Canon Law and the Magisterium. To help our parishioners under-stand Mass Requests and how to go about requesting one we have listed our guidelines below. —All requests must be made IN PERSON at the Rectory Office and is on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE quarterly ba-sis. This quarter the book will open on Tuesday, September 12 for the months of: October, November, and December —The requestor must be at least 13 years old of age to request a mass —Requestor may come in once a day and re-quest up to two (2) masses that do not occur in the same week —Each mass may not have more than 2 intentions (example: Emy & David, Special Intentions or Davidson & Kneller Families = 2 Intentions) with a limit of 25 characters including spaces (for example Mary Smith = 10 characters) per mass request —No changes can be made once the requests have been placed into the calendar —No holds or reservations will be accepted. Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 13 as we commemorate the 5th apparition of our Lady to the three shepherds. The mass will be at 7:30 pm (no Mother of Perpetual Help Novena), followed by an outdoor procession and benediction and blessing of the sick inside the church.
