Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

EQUAL BEFORE GOD In today’s Gospel Jesus tries to lead his questioners beyond the letter of the Law, with its many human interpretations, to the spirit in which it was given. The basic law from the beginning, he says, is that all human beings were created equal in the image of God. Thus, a man and woman in marriage have equality and a fullness that is expressed in their relationship with each other. (In speaking against divorce, Jesus is actually protective of women, who at that time could be divorced by their husbands, but could not obtain a divorce themselves.) The disciples attempt to keep some children and their parents from disturbing Jesus, probably thinking that women and children were not important enough to disturb the Master! Jesus is indignant at their lack of understanding. For him, the children and their parents have as much right to be with him as anyone else. In fact, he looks at the children gathered around him and says that they are the example that self-important people should imitate. He embraces and blesses them. Young children, in general, accept the rules of life without without questioning every little detail. They are open to the love of their parents and trust that rules are imposed for their well-being, even if they do not fully understand them. We are offered the gift of faith by a loving Father. Jesus is asking us to be child-like, not childish, in accepting this gift in simplicity and trust. Learning and discussing issues of faith are fine, but we cannot stop there. Since we do not earn faith—it is freely given to us—we are called to express this faith in how we live our lives. We are equal in God’s sight and equally responsible to live up to our calling.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The man said, “This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman’ ” (Genesis 2:18-24). Psalm — May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives (Psalm 128). Second Reading — He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin (Hebrews 2:9-11). Gospel — Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it (Mark 10:2-16 [2-12]).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gal 1:6-12; Ps 111:1b-2, 7-9, 10c; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24; Ps 139:1b-3, 13-15; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14; Ps 111:1b-6; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: Wis 7:7-11; Ps 90:12-17; Heb 4:12-13; Mk 10:17-30 [17-27]

PLACING OUR TRUST IN GOD….In today’s Gospel story, the Lord Jesus embraces and blesses the children whom the apostles tried to prevent from coming to him. He simply states that “whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Mark 10:15). Perhaps we can make a connection between what psychologists say about the trust level of the developing child and the words of Jesus. Part of our Christian journey involves learning how to place our trust in God. Sometimes this is a challenge, especially when bad things happen to us or to those whom we love. Just as the small child who fully trusts the loving parent moves through very different expressions of emotion, so, too, when we fully trust God, should we be comfortable moving from expressions of joy to cries of lament. This is an honest way of living the Christian life. Those in whom we have placed our trust are usually those with whom we feel we can share our feelings of deep joy and sharp disappointment. This is the kind of relationship that we are called to cultivate with our God. To accept the kingdom of God like a child may mean a change in the way we approach God. We are assured that when we are honest about who we are, honest with God about our deepest longings, joys, and sorrows, God’s loving embrace will remain always

HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children em-body the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are

made aware of God’s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ’s love for us with joy. This is im-possible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will en-able us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. *****************************************************************************************

THE TRUSTING CHILD...Specialists in the psychological development of children tell us that an infant or child can go immediately from crying to laughing and back to crying again because the child has complete trust in the person who is holding him or her. The child has no inhibitions about expressing the swing of emotions because the child knows that the embrace will continue despite the expression of emotion.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, pray for us. St. John Vianney, pray for us. ******************************************

The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of the pain, thanking God during the trials, trusting Him when we’re tempted to lose Hope and LOVING HIM

when he seems so distant and far away.

At my lowest, God is my hope.

At my darkest, God is my light.

At my weakest, God is my strength.

At my saddest, God is my comforter.

"I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul." These are the words of Thérèse of the Child Jesus, a Carmelite nun called the "Little Flower," who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more

popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24. She was canonized in 1925, and two years later she and St. Francis Xavier were declared co-patrons of the missions.

Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering redemptive suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent "to save souls and pray for priests." And shortly before she died, she wrote: "I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth."

On October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized, in light of her holiness and the influence on the Church of her teaching on spirituality. Her parents, Louis and Zélie were beatified in 2008.

Thérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the appearance, the "sell." We have become a dangerously self-conscious people, painfully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to serve others, to do something outside herself, to forget herself in quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that falls to the ground must die in order to live (John 12:24).

Preoccupation with self separates modern men and women from God, from their fellow human beings, and ultimately from themselves. We must relearn to forget ourselves, to contemplate a God who draws us out of ourselves, and to serve others as the ultimate expression of selfhood. These are the insights of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, and they are more valid today than ever.

All her life St. Thérèse suffered from illness. As a young girl she underwent a three-month malady characterized by violent crises, extended delirium and prolonged fainting spells. Afterwards she was ever frail and yet she worked hard in the laundry and refectory of the convent. Psychologically, she endured prolonged periods of darkness when the light of faith seemed all but extinguished. The last year of her life she slowly wasted away from tuberculosis. And yet shortly before her death on September 30 she murmured, "I would not suffer less."

Truly she was a valiant woman who did not whimper about her illnesses and anxieties. Here was a person who saw the power of love, that divine alchemy which can change everything, including weakness and illness, into service and redemptive power for others. Is it any wonder that she is patroness of the missions? Who else but those who embrace suffering with their love really convert the world?

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW “Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” 1 King 19:7 Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from “popery” to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a “chapel.” Catholic “Emancipation” was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. PRAYER TO KNOW THE WAY OF HOLINESS

God of peace, I need you always. In times of joy, I know you are there. May I apply the strength of that holy presence to times of difficulty, challenge, and sorrow. May I know that I am capable of walking on holy ground with you no matter the circumstances of my day. God of love, help me to overcome my distractions to find spiritual refreshment in my awareness of you. Amen. *****************************************************

A PRAYER TO ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA Dear Lord, the Great Healer, I kneel before You, since every per-fect gift must come from You. I pray: Give skill to my hands, clear vision to my mind, kindness and meekness to my heart. Give me singleness of purpose, strength to lift up a part of the burden of my suffering fellow men and a true realization of the privilege that is mine. Take from my heart all guile and worldliness, that, with the simple faith of a child, I may rely on You. Amen. *****************************************************

A PRAYER FOR PRIEST Keep them, I pray Thee, dearest Lord, keep them, for they are Thine—Thy priests whose lives burn out before Thy consecrated shrine. Keep them for they are in the world, though from the world apart,—when earthly pleasures tempt, allure, —shelter them in Thy heart. Keep them, and comfort them in hours of loneliness and pain, when all their life of sacrifice for souls seems but in vain. Keep them, and O remember Lord, they have no one but Thee, yet they have only human hearts, with human frailty. Keep them as spotless as the Host, that daily they caress—their every thought and word and deed, deign, dearest Lord, to bless. Amen. *****************************************************

A PRAYER FOR FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE Holy Spirit, open my eyes and calm my mind. Give me the recollection of the of the Father’s love, of the Son’s unceasing prayer, of the world as God’s world and of your own presence within me. Holy Spirit, give me faith. Holy Spirit, reveal to me the truth of the Father’s unfailing purpose; of the Son’s victory and risen presence; the truth about myself—sinner yet child beloved of God. Holy Spirit give me hope. Holy Spirit, give me peace; peace with God and peace with people. Kindle my desire for you. Strengthen my will to live and serve. Teach me and lead me where you will. Holy Spirit, give me love. Amen. *****************************************************

PRAYER FOR THE SICK O Glorious Saint Camillus, special patron of the sick poor, who for forty years, with truly heroic charity, did devote yourself to the relief of their temporal and spiritual necessities, be pleased to as-sist them now even more generously, since you are blessed in heaven and they have been committed by Holy Church to your powerful protection. Obtain for them from almighty God the healing of all their maladies, or, at least, the spirit of Christian patience and resignation that may sanctify them and comfort them in the hour of their passing to eternity; at the same time obtain for us the precious grace of living and dying after your example in the practice of divine love. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.
