Both Baby N and I have been down since the weekend with a terrible flu (which seems to be

going around, so watch out folks!). There was a time when I used to brag about how I never got sick, even without ever taking any precautionary measures such as vitamins etc.—however, unfortunately, since the birth of my child, I have had to eat my words. Anything that Baby N gets is sure to be suffered by me, which in a way is helpful too because then I know exactly how she’s feeling and can tend to her needs all the better, but at the same time is quite painful as well as children tend to fall sick a lot! During such times, I am even more grateful for the great network of support that I have in the form of my friends and family-- advice on how best to tend to my daughter’s flu was flying in from all corners of the world. I am sharing it here for all

the mothers and mothers to be (who are as clueless as I am) so that you may benefit when the time comes (and it comes unfortunately, and cannot be avoided). Calpol works for everything—even for a cough and cold. Saline drops for a blocked nose, and drops of olbas oil on the baby’s clothes and pillow. Vaporub massage on the chest and back to ease breathing at night. What really helped us turn a corner was steaming in the bathroom. Just prop the baby up on the toilet seat and turn all the hot water taps on. Add some olbas oil to the water in the sink for additional effectiveness. Thank you to my girls and some very special mummies for all these (obvious to some) tips! Make sure the baby is well hydrated. I even gave Baby N a tiny bit of fresh orange juice diluted with water for the vitamin C. Fluids are even more important than solids at this time! I added a bit of turmeric to all of Baby N’s milk and also diluted it with water.

The author, affectionately referred to as Sunshine by her loved ones, recently moved to London from New York. She is enjoying settling in while discovering

the city with her 8-month-old daughter in tow. Watch this space for her mus-ings on London, sweet treats (that she shouldn’t be consuming now that the

baby is no longer an excuse!), parenting, decorating, and anything really that

tickles her fancy!

Page 62: Weekend magzine 27 december 2015

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and helps with these chesty coughs. I also ended up giving Baby N warm water with honey and lemon, but I know those mothers who are a bit militant about not giving their children honey for the first year may be a bit hesitant to try this. To each their own! Just remember it gets worse before it gets better, but it does get better (for a few weeks until they catch a bug again!).

When I was younger (and because as I said earlier, I hardly ever got sick) I used to secretly rejoice every time I was down with the flu or something serious enough to keep me home and tucked in bed (except for ear infections, hated those, never looked forward to those). For one thing, it meant I could skip school and stay at home while all my siblings were

away. It also meant that I got a little, extra affection and attention from my parents—I suppose the middle child in me enjoyed this. I loved the extra bit of care I received, especially from my father, who I was convinced was an actual doctor, since everybody called him Doctor Sa’ab (Mr. Doctor?) and I only realized that his Doctorate was in Finance and not Medicine at the age of seven (late bloomer, what can I say?) My father would peer inside my mouth and gasp at the sight of my tonsils which he would inevitably liken to footballs, and then would rush to his medicine cabinet to get the dreaded “throat paint”. If you

are a child who grew up in the 90’s in Pakistan, you are probably familiar with this terrible concoction. But my Dad swore by it—still does, however, thankfully, it was discontinued! I hated the throat paint but loved the process—my father pretending to be a doctor, me parking myself for the entire day on my parents’ settee (otherwise a coveted seating option hardly available), watching tv, while being served khichree (kedgeree but with lentils and chicken broth instead of fish as it is made here in London), and my parents checking in on me after every hour or so. And this is all I really remember. Funnily

enough, I have no memories of my parents getting sick (and I hope that remains the case for as long as possible!) I don’t remember them taking a sick day, or staying in bed all day, while we served them Yakhni (chicken broth) and pressed pieces of wet cloth on their forehead. I don’t remember them not being available to me because they were unwell, or not showing up for my school events because they

were running a fever, or not being there to drop and pick me up from school because they just couldn’t get out of bed that day. And I suppose being sick at the same time as Baby N made me realize that I don’t have these kinds of memories because my parents just always powered through anything they had. It’s because a parent, most of the time, doesn’t really get to have a sick day—a child always takes precedent over whatever the parent may be going through. All I wanted to do these last couple of days was to take some sleep inducing cold medicine and conk out for the night. But I couldn’t because I needed

to be alert and available in case Baby N woke up in the middle of the night. In the mornings, I wanted to sleep in and stay in bed all day, but I couldn’t because I needed to get up and feed

Baby N, and change her diaper, give her medicine, steam her, give her a warm bath and tend to her needs. Parents don’t get sick days. My point is, if you don’t have kids—make the most of getting sick! Enjoy it while it lasts! Okay, I’m kidding-- that isn’t my point (at least in its entirety!) I suppose, I’m just feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards my parents for always taking care of me, and putting my needs before theirs. And I’m feeling a little sad, because now that I’m older and have been granted access to this “Parents-Only Club”, I know all the back-stories I was guarded from as a child, and I no longer have the privilege of being carefree and oblivious. My parents, grandparents, loved ones, can’t hide it from me anymore when they’re sick or not feeling well. And even though that makes me feel strangely vulnerable and insecure on some level, I hope I can take as good care of them as they did of me—selflessly and relentlessly, if the need ever arises.

I’m just feelIng an

overwhelmIng sense of

gratItude towards my parents for

always takIng care of me,

and puttIng my needs before

theIrs.

After a long night, especially if it’s a random Wednesday night that ran into the wee hours, making yourself look presentable for work the next morning can be a mission and a half. You can instantly make your eyes look wide awake by lining the inner rim of your lower eyeliner with a nude eye pencil!

What’s worse than dried-up mascara especially since most stores you walk into to buy it will have dried up mascara too? To get the most out of your flaky mascara, mix a few drops of contact lens solution in and you’re good to go!

If you’re missing the beach hair vibe on dreary winter mornings, prep the night before. Just work any kind of hair cream into your hair (ends to roots) and tie it up in two braids. Sleep on it! Wake up and you’re all set to shine!
