Quick Quiz• What is rain?• What is a courthouse?• What is comfortable?• What is a hospital?• What is luggage?
Vocabulary• To review, write down some questions focused on this unit’s
vocabulary and then answer your own questions using the very same vocabulary• For Example: What is the gym? It is where you exercise.
Conversation• Talk with each other in English as much as possible to become
familiar with speaking and listening
Some Simple Questions• How are you?• Where are you going?• What do you want to do?• What do you look forward to?• Where do you want to go?
• Now write down your own answers to the questions.
Some Sample Answers• I am good.• I am going to the market.• I want you to sing.• I look forward to the winter.• I want to go to the city.
Sentence Activity• Write down as many sentences as you can using the
vocabulary from this unit.• For example• The hospital is large and clean.• Students learn a lot in school.• You get money from the bank.• The jail is small.
Teaching Vocabulary to Children• Example Lesson Plan• Create a set of memory cards for the children with a total of six
cards arranged in two rows of three cards. On three cards are new vocabulary words and on the other three are the pictures that correspond with the words
• Have the children turn the cards face down, shuffle them, and then rearranged them in two rows of three cards each
• Have the children turn over two cards at one time, and if the picture and the word correspond to each other than the child earns a point and takes the cards off the field
• The goal is to have the children associate pictures with words
Ideas for Classroom Setup• Teachers can hang the students’ vocabulary pictures on a wall
in the back of the classroom• Teachers can have a little shelf of English books and
encourage the children to read them whenever there is free time
Encourage Students to Read More and to Write More• Assign the children a little reading each week and ask them to
complete it• At the end ask the children to read the story out loud together• Once all the students finish reading the stories, ask the
children to write down a little summary of the reading and draw a little picture
• Create a chart with all the children’s names on it and place a star next to each student who completed the task of reading, speaking, and drawing
Encourage Students to Read More and to Write More• Lesson Plan Example• Give the students five words each week that they have to make
five sentences out of• Give the students some examples and ask them to draw pictures
next to the sentences also to clarify their meaning• Have the students share their pictures with each other and turn
them in • Games• http://pbskids.org/games
Poster Activity• Give the whole class a large poster and have the children
write sentences all over the poster. Have the students use as many new words as possible and have them decorate the poster.
How to Start Reading• It is really hard to understand every word, so practice reading
for the main idea
