“Higher Learning,” a film directed by John Singleton and released in 1994, deals with issuessurrounding race, class, gender, sexuality, and nationality on a college campus. Theseconcerns remain important to students today - especially in light of the shootings in Californiain May, new attention towards rape culture and athlete/sports culture, the evolvingimmigration debate, and the discourse around the crumbling of affirmative action programs.Join faculty of the Department of History as they host a screening and discussion addressingthe contemporary relevance of this film and the ways in which courses in their departmentcan help to place these matters impacting the lives of Southern students within their properhistorical contexts.

8:00pm-10:00pm • RHA Movie Series: Life as a House • FPSJoin RHA and the Transfer Living and Learning Community for a showing of Life as a House(2001) Drama – Starring Kevin Kline, Hayden Christensen, Kristin Scott Thomas, and JennaMalone. Directed by Irwin Winkler. When a boring and predictable man is diagnosed withcancer, he resolves to make big changes in his life, including taking custody of his angry andout-of-control teenage son. The two tear down his house, and end up rebuilding all thoseindividuals around them. All involved are confronted with their true selves and have todetermine whether or not to choose to redeem themselves through reinvention.
