Focus Passage: Matthew 13:1-23

Key Bible Verse: Psalm 119:105

Life ApplicationI can believe and obey God's Word.

Level of Biblical Learning (Jesus)Jesus wants people to trust Him.

For many people, working in a garden and planting seeds is one of the most enjoyable events of the year. For others it is one of the most frustrating. What if a "Master Gardener" came to your house and presented a "how-to" on each and every type of plant and soil? •Read Matthew 13:1-9. Jesus knew the

understanding level of His audience; He spoke in their language and on their level. The people knew about planting and sowing, so Jesus took advantage of their knowledge to teach spiritual lessons. Jesus used an object lesson—seeds and soil. Do you think the people reflected on Jesus' teaching the next time they planted their seeds? Reflect on the learning levels of the children you teach. Do you present spiritual concepts on the children's level? Do you use appropriate object lessons that help the children recall and apply spiritual lessons? Do you challenge the children you teach to make personal life application? Do you yourself make life application from the Bible truths?

•Read Matthew 13:10-17. Can you imagine seeing Jesus in the flesh and having first-hand experiences of His miracles? In what ways have you experienced Jesus? How can you help children do more than learn about Jesus? How can you help children experience Him?

•Read Matthew 13:18-23. Parables made people think for themselves, and in turn, apply the message to their lives. Consider the comprehension level of the children you teach.

•Pray God's Word will be presented clearly through this session. Pray the children will not only hear and know about God's Word, but they will believe and obey it in each aspect of life.

The Parable of the SowerBased on Matthew 13:1-23

One day, Jesus was sitting by the sea. A large crowd of people gathered around Him. Jesus got into a boat while the people stayed on the shore. Jesus told the people this parable. "One day, a farmer went out to sow seeds. Some of the seeds fell on the ground where people walk [display soil 1]. The ground was hard and the birds came and ate the seeds. Some of the seeds fell around the

rocks [display soil 2]. The seeds began to grow, but the sun scorched the plants because they did not have any roots. The plants died."

Jesus continued, "A few of the seeds were scattered along with the thorns [display soil 3]. When the seeds began to grow, they were choked by the thorns. Finally, some of the seeds fell on good soil [display soil 4]. These seeds grew and produced the food they were supposed to grow. Some of the seeds grew 30 times the amount that was planted, and some 100 times the amount."

Jesus' disciples asked Him, "Why do You speak in parables?"

Jesus said to His disciples, "God has revealed things He wants you to know, that He has not yet told other people. I speak to the people in parables because they do not understand everything I am telling them."

9aDiscuss and Review the Bible Story (5 minutes)

Pull It TogetherWorship Guides, pencils, "Soil" (CD) from step 8

•Call attention to the soil pictures.•Ask: "What types of soil did the seeds fall on?"•Say: "The hard soil represents people who do

not want to know what the Bible teaches. They refuse to hear or listen to what the Bible says. The rocky soil represents people who listen to what the Bible says, but when people begin to make fun of or question them, they stop learning. The thorny soil represents people who begin learning about what the Bible teaches, but they too, like the rocky soil, stop learning. The good soil represents the people who listen to and learn from the Bible. These people learn more about God and how He wants them to live. These people believe and obey God's Word."

•Ask: "Which type of soil does God want us to be like?"

•Explain: "God wants us to be like the good soil. He wants us to learn about and obey Him."

•Distribute Worship Guides and pencils.•Guide the children to complete "Soil Sample."•Talk about the "Soil Sample" statements.

12aShow "Questions" Video (DVD, 6 minutes)•Show the video.•Ask: "What type of decisions did you see in the

video? If you were Caleb what would you have done with the phone? What would you have done when the phone broke? How did Caleb's actions affect his friendship with Jeffrey?"

•Continue: "Place yourself in Julie's position. How would you feel listening to Christy talk about Sarah? What would you have said?"

•Conclude: "When we're in tempting situations, it may not be easy to trust and obey God's Word. The actors had 're-dos.' They got to re-film the situations to show us the right ways to do things. In life, we don't have the chance for re-dos. Once we do something, it is done. When we do disobey God's Word, we need to ask Him to forgive us. We also need to ask the people we hurt to forgive us."

13aMake Life Application (5 minutes)

Pull It TogetherMarkers

•Distribute markers.•Call attention to "Seeds of Growth."•Discuss the ABCs of becoming a Christian as

stated on the Worship Guides.•Say: "We can believe and obey God's Word.

•Continue: "God wants each of us to accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord. We can learn how much Jesus loves us by reading and obeying what the Bible says."

•Offer to talk to any child interested in knowing more about asking Jesus to be his Savior and Lord.
