Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings

The idea of mercy is perceived by some to reveal a “weakness” in an individual who extends it. The human need or desire for revenge in the natural world overpowers some. When a criminal is arrested who has tortured, raped and dismembered his victim, the horrific events extract emotions of revenge from the victim’s friends and family. As seen with the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, America rose to action to hold to account those responsible. In its wake, there arose in some Americans a feeling of Islamophobia and even Xenophobia that still persists today in some. Today’s feast, Divine Mercy, reveals that God shows us the correct path that should be taken. Jesus, inhumanly tortured and crucified, extends mercy through forgiveness and love to all, his executioners and friends. After his Resurrection, Christ appears to those who had deserted and denied him and utters words of comfort and forgiveness rather than reproach and account-ability. Mercy is presented by Christ as a virtue and as a means of reconciliation with the One who created all. This mercy comes from God and is “Divine” in origin. God makes strong and desirable a trait that man perceives as weak. Mercy is the reflection of the Divine that over-powers the hate and emotions of the weak. It is through mercy that God becomes available to us.

This transformative Mercy of Christ is reflected in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. The account relates the healing and wonders at the hands of the apostles upon the people brought to them. This Mercy is performed by the apostles through the power of Christ. Its strength is embedded so thoroughly that even the shadow of Peter heals the afflicted. It is God’s Mercy and the love of Christ that catapults the growth of the infant Church. As the apostles move towards the ends of the earth, the Mercy of the God begins to transform the entire Roman Empire. Christ’s love is Divine and freely given to those who seek it.

The eternal origin and existence of Christ’s love, His Divinity, is revealed in the second reading from the Book of Revelation. John’s vision depicts the final result of this Divine Mercy. Jesus is revealed as the triumphant and vindicated conqueror who has overcome evil and death. Through him, the prophecy of Daniel has come to fruition and those who choose to follow him and remain faithful

will triumph, too. To the early persecuted Church, this message of final victory was reassuring and emboldening.

This reassurance and enlivening message of Divine Mercy is found in today’s Gospel by John. The appearance by Jesus to his frightened and despairing apostles sends a transformative spirit among them. The Lord’s first words were “Peace be with you”. Contemplating the effects of his appearance and those words sends shivers down the spine. The disciples, who had pledged to stick by him and even die for him, and had deserted him found themselves

confronted by their Lord. Instead of a tirade, Christ offered his mercy and forgiveness for their despicable behavior. More importantly, the Divine Christ extended even greater love and power to his Chosen. Breathing over them the Spirit, Jesus gave man the power to forgive sins through the power of His Divine Spirit. This unique capability placed in the hands of man his own eternal destiny. John emphasizes the importance of this gift through the absence of Thomas who refuses to believe until he is confronted physically himself. It is apparent through this Gospel passage that God wishes mankind to choose this new Divine relationship. Just as Adam had chosen to break faith with God, God now allows mankind the ability to freely return and gain mercy.

Holy Mother the Church, through the power granted by Christ, allows each individual that same privilege, today. On this solemnity, the Church allows individuals to receive a plenary or partial indulgence if they fulfill the requirements – reception of the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, the Holy Eucharist and prayers for the intention of the Holy Father. The benefits of reception of this privilege is not only the forgiveness of sins but also the elimination of their purgatorial effects. Today, Christ offers all who wish to receive Him unfettered access through His Sacred Heart. Today, Jesus affirms that Mercy is a Divine attribute and should be modeled by all Christians.

SAINT OF THE MONTH:

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA April 29

The guiding force of St. Catherine’s short life

was complete surrender to Christ. She viewed

this as a goal to be reached through one's

lifetime. Born in fourteenth century Italy as the

23rd child of loving parents, St. Catherine grew

up as an intelligent, cheerful and intensely

religious person. She spent three years in

seclusion and contemplative prayer as part of

the Dominican Third Order, and drew a group

of followers, including priests. She wrote letters and spoke with candor about

the need to commit to Christ, drawing opposition from those with worldly

views. She made a deep impression on the pope and worked tirelessly for the

crusade against the Turks. In 1378, there began the Great Papal Schism which

created intense conflict between areas of the Church. At this time, at age 31,

she spent the last two years of her life in Rome in prayer pleading for the unity

of the Church. St. Catherine ranks high as a mystic and spiritual writer and was

declared co-patron of Italy along with St. Francis of Assisi. At our church, we

have a stained glass window that honors her.
