A place where WOMEN learn and work together to develop their SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL, ECONOMIC, and POLITICAL POTENTIAL.

Letter From the E.D. Why does history matter?

Look around your house. There are countless photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, heirlooms, keepsakes and memorabilia. Imagine if these were lost forever, never to be seen or held again. History comes alive when you're able to not only

read about the past, but to touch the artifacts, enjoy the images and study the actual words. Most history starts with simply learning about family and community. A concentrated effort to preserve our heritage is a vital link to cultural, educational, aesthetic inspirational and economic legacies--the things that quite literally make us who we are. In school, history can be the most tedious of sub-jects; so many facts, names, and dates that mean little or nothing to you. But history is not something obscure or unimportant. In fact, it plays a vital role in our everyday lives. We study our past in order to achieve greater influence over our future. It is from history that we learn what to champion and what to avoid. Decision making around the world, every day, is based on what came before us. Why? Because history matters. For the last five years, the Women's Intercultural Center has been piecing it's history. As we prepare to celebrate our 20th Anniversary in November, we want to cherish and learn from our history while planning our future.

The Center serves and connects women from all walks of life residing in Southern NM and West TX. We are true to our original foundation of eradicating isolation with emphasis in the rural communities we serve and providing alternative education.

I will light a light in the name of the One who Loves, who lit the world & breathed the bread of life into me I will light a light in the name of Compassion who leads me to work for justice & calls me to do my part so that all may be whole. I will light a light in the name of women everywhere who hold up families, communities & society. May all know that women are important to the world. I will light a light In the name of the Women’s Intercultural Center & in support of its participants, volunteers donors & supporters & all those who participate in any way. I will light a light to the future. May our path be clear, may we build to together, & may we grow in the process. I will light a light In the name of the Spirit Who is alive in all creation & blesses me with work, rest, companions, family, & a hunger t know my true self.

At the Center we often have a wide variety of visitors who come to learn from us and observe our operations for them to find ways to duplicate our efforts.

So we were not surprised to have a Rey Molina, a community resident, wandering around the facility after hours showing his friend who operates a nonprofit in Mexico the construction of the main Center building.

As we were closing up, Saif and Mary met up with Rey and enhanced the tour experience as well as answered questions in reference to the construction method that was used by the Center.

Rey’s friend is interested in duplicating our construction method of compacted earth and tires for housing in Mexico.

We provided her with the educational materials that were used at the time of construction and the story of the construction itself as related by the women who participated in the project.

We hope that the information we shared will help her attain her desired goal to bring housing to those in need in Mexico.

Anthony Women's Center Hosting Fifth "Fuerza" Camp

In Spanish, ‘fuerza’ is the word for strength. Here at the Women’s In-tercultural Center in Anthony, NM, women are coming to find fuerza in each other and themselves. Ilse Arrieta is a program coordinator at the center for a three-day camp for teen girls called Feminine Fuerza. Arrieta is not a teenager anymore, but she can relate to the hardships. She and her husband have just recently reunited back in the United States. “Well I try to help what I know. Like my husband was over there for almost 2 years…it really takes more time for Mexico to get your papers done.” While all that was going on, Arrieta went through the unthinkable as a mother to be.

“When I was pregnant…I started hav-ing lots of bleeding and the doctor told me I had lost the baby…two weeks after that…they found out the baby was still alive.” She named her baby Itzae, Spanish for “gift of god.” This year marks the fifth year the cen-ter has hosted over a dozen teenage girls. Mary Carter, the center’s executive director says none of these women are victims. “The thing about it is you have to see that…we don’t believe in anybody as a victim because they’re not.” The camp discusses health issues for teens and last year, social media was a topic of conversation.

“It’s very different from generation to generation…we had a little training on why certain things should be private and should not be passed on to any-body.” The Women’s Intercultural Center here considers itself a place for edu-cation. It avoids taking political stances, even when the community would like it to. But there’s one view carter per-sonally takes. “Hispanic women are very strong and resilient…overcome issues…finish strong…the tough part is reminding them how strong they are.” To view the video interview visit http://krwg.org/post/anthony-womens-center-hosting-fifth-fuerza-camp.
