“More Than Words” Week 4: Words of Encouragement

This weekend is kind of a milestone. This should be the last Sunday Mass that I live-stream from the chapel in the rectory. We plan to return to our regular weekend schedule next weekend, although with a good number of restrictions. Please be sure to read the guidelines for “Re-

Entering the Churches” which are published on the parish website, in the eBulletin, and on the parish Facebook page. This is also the fourth week of our message series, “More Than Words.” The main point of this message series is that life and death are in the power of the tongue and in order for us to be better followers of Christ, better friends and co-workers and neighbors and brothers and sisters, we have to be learning to use our words wisely. Three weeks ago we looked at some of the sins of the tongue. Those sins come from our heart. For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. We looked at how our words reveal our heart and reveal what we have to work on in our heart. Two weeks ago we looked at finding words in Scripture to bring clarity and direction to our life. We don’t want to let the words of others define our direction. We want to let the word of God set the direction to our lives. And so we asked everyone to begin looking for a verse or story of Scripture to claim as your own. Last week we acknowledged that everyone experiences communication breakdowns, and looked at the account of the Tower of Babel to better understand the causes of communication breakdowns (namely pride, trying to make ourselves equal to God), and the account of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles as an example of how we can unity to what our communications breakdowns has caused to divide. This week we are going to look at something that everyone in the world seems to be starving for: words of encouragement. Some research indicates that for every one word of encouragement that we hear, we hear six words of criticism. That ratio is so wrong. As we will hear this weekend from St. Paul in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, as Christians we are commanded to be encouragers. So what we need to know from this weekend’s message is that as Christians we are called to offer words of encouragement to the people around us. The two main ways we can do this is by helping them know that they are not alone in their struggles and doubts, and that they do have what it takes to deal with whatever they are dealing with. After hearing this weekend’s message what we are called to do is identify someone in our lives who is in a particular need of encouragement, and share with them some words of encouragement.

MORE THAN WORDS

Week Four- June 6 & 7 – Trinity Sunday “Words of Encouragement” Scripture: 2 Cor. 13:11-13 In the second reading, Paul tells the Corinthians to encourage one another. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A once asked, “What is the telltale sign someone needs to be encouraged? They are breathing.” We have an incredible ability to use our words to encourage and bless the people around us. In this message we will look at the power of encouragement and how to use our words as a blessing to others. What do we want them to know? Our words can be a great blessing and encouragement to others. What do we want them to do? Identify one person they want to bless and encourage in the week ahead.

WAYS FAMILIES CAN COPE DURING STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS When St. Ignatius of Loyola started the Jesuit order, it was a common practice for the Jesuits to understand and live their First Principle. What is a First Principle? It is, in sum, a way of living and being. St. Ignatius knew that as humans we are creatures of habit. So, he instructed the Jesuits to make their First Principle a habit. The Jesuits First Principle is Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (A.M.D.G.), which means all for the glory of God. Throughout the day Jesuits are to keep this First Principle in mind by repeating it and asking themselves if what they are doing right now glorifies God. If it does, then they do it. If it does not, then they don’t do it. This is a great time for parents to begin a first principle and encourage their kids to do the same. At dinner or before bed families can discuss their day and if certain actions or activities glorified God that day or not. St. Ignatius felt very strongly about this first principle. In fact, he believed it was the way to sanctity and sainthood. I cannot think of a better reason for parents to want to incorporate this first principle into their family life then for parents to want to help their kids (and themselves) become saints. This is our ultimate purpose as parents – to lead our kids to a relationship with God that will last forever. The first principle is not easy. It takes some discipline. There will be days where family members will forget to keep their first principle in mind. There will be times when they remember the first principle too late, maybe after they said or did something that did not glorify God. This is all part of the discipline of learning a new habit. I have heard psychologists claim that a new habit is learned by continuous repetition for anywhere between 21—120 days (depending on what psychologist you listen to). St. Ignatius knew this well and was constantly asking his Jesuits how they were doing following their first principle. We as parents resemble St. Ignatius except that instead of an order (Jesuits) we have a family (kids). We can constantly remind ourselves and ask our children the same question that St. Ignatius would ask the Jesuits – How are you doing following your first principle? This can stem into other questions too, such as what is giving you trouble following your first principle or what are some things you plan on doing tomorrow to follow your first principle? Mother Theresa had her Missionaries of Charity follow the same idea as St. Ignatius of Loyola. Instead of their first principle being all for the glory of God, they have their first principle as one of Christ’s last words on the Cross: I Thirst. The words “I Thirst” are written underneath every Cross in every Missionary of Charity home. They are to constantly remember those words from Christ as if he is speaking to them personally and telling them He thirst for their love. And they ask the question, am I loving Jesus in what I am doing, speaking, thinking right now? So, your first principle does not need to be A.M.D.G. It does not need to be I Thirst. But, pick something out and stick to it. There is no better time than now, when we are stuck at home to begin our first principle. I believe that if each family starts living their first principle to the best of their ability there will be massive change for the better in our culture. People will be kinder, relationships will be stronger, verbal communication among neighbors and family members will return, mercy and forgiveness, patience and the virtues will reign in our hearts. And St. Ignatius and Mother Theresa will be looking down on us with a big smile.

June 7, 2020 Most Holy Trinity “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” JOHN 3:16 Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love and forgiveness? Are you generous with your time, skills, money and possessions? If you give someone something, do you expect something in return? Do you give your time freely or do you “fit it in” when it’s convenient for you? God desires a personal relationship with us so much that He gave us His Son, unconditionally! Pray for a grateful and generous heart.

RE-ENTERING THE CHURCH Liturgical-Pastoral Directives in a Time of Pandemic

For Limited Public Celebration of the Mass at Resurrection Parish

As you know, Bishop David O’Connell issued directives for the re-opening of church buildings throughout the Diocese of Trenton for the limited public celebration of the Mass. These guidelines are how we will implement the Bishop’s directives here at Resurrection Parish. The Bishop proposed that public, “in church,” weekday Masses can be offered starting Monday, June 8, 2020. Weekday Masses are limited to no more than 25 people in attendance, which includes the priest. We will try to open the church at the Holy Name campus for the 9 AM Mass, but we are not sure if we will have the live-streaming equipment installed by June 8, and we are directed to continue to live-stream the Mass, so please continue to check the parish website for updates on this. We will “re-enter” the churches for weekend Masses starting the weekend of June 13 & 14; the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. While the Bishop has directed that we can have no more than 1/3 occupancy, this is also dependent on maintaining appropriate social distancing. Again, please check the parish website for updates as to how many people we can have at each Mass. We will return to our normal weekend Mass schedule: Vigil at 5 PM at HNC, Sunday at 8 AM at SCC, 10 AM at HNC, and 12 noon at SCC. Only the 10 AM Mass will be live-streamed on Sundays. Those who are hesitant or fearful because of COVID 19 concerns as well as those with a COVID 19 diagnosis or symptoms, those who may be asymptomatic carriers, those not feeling well, those with underlying health conditions or those in a high risk category should stay home and avoid any public gathering. A dispensation from Sunday/Holy Day obligation has been granted so that the faithful could “stay home” in good conscience. CAPACITY & SEATING ARRANGEMENTS As noted above, for weekday Masses, only 24 people may attend in addition to the priest. Weekend Masses will be limited to 33% capacity, although this might be lower if proper social distancing demands it.

Pews will be marked off with painter’s tape. Do NOT sit on the places marked with the tape, but rather on the clear space.

Social distance (6 feet) must be maintained.

Children under age 10 may sit in the same spot as their parent. Children 10 years-old or older must sit in their own spot, 6 feet away from any other person.

Our ushers will seat everyone. DO NOT SEAT YOURSELF!!!!

The church will be seated to fill the open seats fro the front of the church to the back. NO SPECIAL REQUESTS FOR SEATING CAN BE HONORED.
