Principal’s Prose Mulwaree on Show – What a wonderful evening we had on Friday evening! It was an amazing evening and wonderful to see the talents of our students on display. Wherever one walked, there were students singing, playing music, dancing, acting, making coffee or serving the wonderful food made by our hospitality students, just to name a few. I enjoyed talking with students who had performed or worked on stalls and they all enjoyed the experience. It was great to see our students and staff working alongside each other and having a great time. Thanks to Kalynda Martone for her co-ordination of the event and to John Russell for his time in preparing and organising performance acts on the night on the main stage. So many other staff pitched in and helped with a myriad of jobs and is indicative of their commitment to creating fabulous opportunities for our students. School Photos – School Photos took place this week. If students were away, there will be a catch-up day which we will advertise at a later date. COVID 19 - As I write this, we are all impacted by the spread of this virus. I am endeavouring to keep the community updated as much as possible and our staff are preparing online materials for students if the school has to close or if students are away. While excursions and all sporting events and clubs have had to be cancelled, Mulwaree staff are also working hard to maintain our usual positive culture amid

the hygiene regime that has become part of daily life.

Warm Regards, Judith Stuart Judith Stuart

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information for Parents and Carers How you can support your child

It is perfectly normal for children to have questions about events that are covered in the media, such as the information currently being distributed about COVID-19. Children look to the significant adults in their lives for guidance on how to manage their reactions and you can help your child by remaining calm and reassuring them. There is a common misunderstanding that talking with your child about a topic such as COVID-19 may increase their anxiety. This is not the case. It is important to listen to your child and answer their questions as honestly as possible and correct any misunderstandings. This will help them feel informed and understand what is happening. Keeping up to date with the facts from reliable sources will help keep conversations calm, considered, and constructive. Provide information in words that are appropriate to the age of your child. Children can be distressed by hearing repeated stories so monitor how much your child is being exposed to television and social media and encourage them to talk to you about what they are seeing and hearing. Some practical advice

Some practical advice for your child includes reminding them to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze (coughing into their elbow is a useful strategy), keep their hands clean by washing them regularly with soap and water, and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth before washing their hands. These are easy habits for children to adopt,

and should help them feel as though they're able to exert some control over their circumstances. If your child must stay at home, it is important for your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle including proper diet, sleep, and social contact at home and by email and phone with family and friends. Communication is important

• read the department’s response to COVID-19 for current information • read any information sent home by the school. • contact the school if your child becomes unwell. Where to get help

Contact the school if you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing to discuss the most appropriate support. Support is also available through a number of agencies and community organisations. Parents and carers can: • call the National Coronavirus Health Information line (1800 020 080) • review the NSW Health COVID-19 website for the latest information and advice • obtain help and information from the local General Practitioner or Community Health Centre If you would like additional support, the following services are available • The school counselling service • Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800 – kidshelpline.com.au • Headspace – 1800 650 890 – eheadspace.org.au • Parent Helpline – 1300 1300 52 • Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 • Lifeline – 13 11 14

Swimming Carnival 2020 Due to unfavourable weather, the Swimming Carnival was postponed from the original day to a competitor only carnival on Tuesday 11th Feb. Students competing were bussed up to the pool after roll call. All students competed to the best of their ability and displayed exemplary behaviour, even when a thunderstorm hit at 2pm and all students had to remain in the club house until it had cleared. Due to the thunderstorm that afternoon, a number of events were not completed. Students wanting to compete in these events completed them on Tuesday 18th Feb. A huge thank you to all students and parents for their cooperation and understanding with the changes of dates and good luck to all those competing at the Zone Carnival.

Leading with Action Day Written by Leigh Chalker (Year 10)

On Wednesday the 19th of February, the Stage 5 Leadership class attended the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge – Leading with Action Day at Carr Confoy Fields. We were also joined by Moss Vale High and Goulburn High students.

During the day, we were able to take part in a number of workshops facilitated by Football NSW, Rugby ACT/NSW and Cricket NSW. These workshops enabled us to learn the skills required to provide sessions in each of these sports that we will be able to pass onto students from the Goulburn and district primary schools at the upcoming PSC Learning to Lead Day.

Our class was very thankful for the opportunity we were given, and we can’t wait for the chance to teach the younger students the skills that we were able to learn!

South Coast Cricket Trials On Monday the 24th of February, Josh Latham and Lachlan Greig made their way to Queanbeyan Cricket Club for the South Coast Boys Cricket trials. It was a hot and humid day, with fielding conditions being very tough. Both Lachlan and Josh did a fantastic job in the field, managing a few catches each and demonstrating some excellent ground fielding. With the ball, Lachlan bowled with control and accuracy, giving away very little. Josh bowled wisely, taking a few wickets with his seamers and cutters. When batting, the boys applied themselves for the majority of their innings, collecting singles and hitting the bad ball when it came their way. Unfortunately, both boys were unable to make the first cut of 24 players (from 45) to move on to the next trial, later in the year, in Wollongong. Both boys represented Mulwaree with their best efforts and should be proud of the skill sets they demonstrated.

Zone Swimming 2020 Written by Bridie Robertson and Meg Baxter (Year 10)

On Wednesday the 26th of February a bus of students travelled to Queanbeyan to compete in the Southern Tablelands Zone Swimming Carnival. Mulwaree had 49 students competing and ,overall, we finished second on the day. 4 students were crowned age champions – Vinicious Suehara (12 years boys), Emily Weston (15 years girls), Joshua Skelly (16 years boys) and Jaime Craig (17+ girls). A large number of relay teams made it through to the Regional Carnival to be held in Dapto on the 10th of March. In total, we will have 36 swimmers attending. All swimmers are to be congratulated on their outstanding performances during the day. We would also like to thank all parents who attended for your support. Well Done Mulwaree!

Regional Swimming 2020

On Tuesday the 10th of March, a large contingent of students competed in the Regional Swimming Carnival held at Dapto Pool. Anticipation of a strong showing was high after a solid team performance at the Zone carnival a week earlier. As expected, our relay teams swam exceptionally well, with both the 12 years boys and 17+ years girls making the top 3, earning themselves a spot at the CHS championships. Some strong individual performances also ensured we now have a number of students progressing through. Congratulations goes to the following students who will represent the South Coast Region in April: Ruby, Emily, Vinicius, Luke, Logan, Austin, Madyson, Jaime, Heidi and Katelyn. Overall, Mulwaree finished in 11th place, with 2 students making it into the top 5 in the race for age champion. We would like to congratulate all swimmers on their behaviour and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day. A huge thanks must also go out to the parents and carers who transported and encouraged students on the day.
