Global Citizens of the Future TAIRUA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 05 June 2012 Week 7 of 10 Kia Ora tatou Puppets, Maori art work, news presenters, bug art work, bro chures developed via the microsoft publisher programme, painted shags that Vincent Van Gogh would have been proud of and a singing group that brought tears to the eyes. Last Fridays assembly really was something special. Our school arts programme has always been exceptionally VWURQJ DQG LW·V RQ RFFDVLRQV OLNH WKLV WKH GLYHUVH UDQJH RI tasks and activities, designed to extend our students capa bilities, are obvious. I would like congratulate all our students on their efforts and acknowledge the fantastic efforts of our teaching and support staff. For those of you that missed the ¶*OHH &OXEV· ILUVW SHUIRUPDQFH \RX DUH DEOH WR YLHZ LW RQOLQH via our school website. As we near the end of term 2 there are a fairly busy couple of weeks ahead. Please read this weeks newsletter carefully to ensure you are well informed of approaching events. Elgregoes Magic Show: Last Wednesday we had Elgregoe, the magician, visit our School to share his talents with the students. Not just an amazing magician, Elgregoe is passionate about developing effective values and attitudes within everyone. Respect, consideration, support, courage, honesty and caring were all key ideas communicated throughout this performance. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience which was only made possible by the efforts of our P.F.A Book Week: Next week is Book Week and we have a number of things happening in and around the school. Celebrity readers, au thors, poets, and stories over the P.A system will make for an interesting book week programme. The theme of the week is ¶1HZ =HDODQG $XWKRUV· DQG HYHU\ FODVVURRP ZLOO EH IRFXVVLQJ RQ D GLIIHUHQW DXWKRU 'RQ·W IRUJHW RXU ERRN GLVSOD\ ZLOO EH open TuesdayFriday morning from 8:309:00 and again in the afternoon from 2:303:30 for purchasing books. If you have questions or queries regarding book week, or would like to get involved, please make contact with the office. TAIRUA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Survey Reminder: After a number requests from our community to consider the possibility of introducing a uniform, the board has con structed a preliminary survey to gauge the communities opinion. The survey was issued as part of lasts weeks news OHWWHU 7KH VXUYH\ DVNV RQH TXHVWLRQ ´:RXOG \RX OLNH D VXE committee of board members, community members and student representatives to explore the uniform options DYDLODEOH IRU 7DLUXD 6FKRROµ 3OHDVH FRPSOHWH WKLV VXUYH\ and return it to school by Friday the 8th June. Thank you to those parents that have already returned their forms. Matariki, Parent Meeting: As part of our Matariki celebrations in week 9, a small group of parents and teaching staff have developed a programme that will provide a range of cultural learning opportunities for our students to engage in. Tuesday the 19th will see our students working in their house groups (Pepe, Pinnacles, Pohutakawa, Paku) rotating round a number of activities such as haka, poi making, waiata, art and weaving and making fried bread. Our hangi will re quire a significant amount of preparation and the Wednes day programme will allow for this organisation. Thursday we have a performance from the Thames Kapa Haka group followed by our hangi. If you would like to be in volved in events throughout the week please pop along to the meeting on Thursday afternoon from 3:10 in the staf froom. Winter Sports Day: Tuesday the 26th of June: Once again Tairua School will be hosting the H.O.T (Hikuai, Opoutere, Tairua) Winter sports day. The day consists of HYHU\ VFKRRO ILHOGLQJ D 5XJE\ ·V WHDP 1HWEDOO DQG 6RF cer team. This event will take place on Tuesday the 26th of June, starting at approximately 11:30. We had a great turn out last year and look forward to seeing many of you here to support the children. A notice outlining the days pro gramme will be sent home for all those children participat ing. Our Garden Club had a highly successful Friday after-­noon selling a wide range of seedlings to our community. For those of you that placed an order, your plants will be ready for pick up on Tuesday afternoon outside the side office door. If you missed

cauliflower, cabbage, red cabbage, silver beet, spinach and rocket are available. These are in punnets of 6 for a small cost of $2. All proceeds will be reinvested to further develop our school seedling programme. More information please pop along on Friday afternoon. Student Artwork:

We had some exceptional art work on display at last Fridays assembly. Room 2 with their observational drawings of a shag and the Maori art completed by room 4. Another item on Fridays agenda were the puppets created by room 1. If you get a chance pop in and have a look they really are amazing. Tairua Heritage Month Events: Tairua Library is hosting heritage activities throughout June, including a special one-­off community Heritage Exhibition.
