State Basketball

Success On Tuesday 31st October, the under 15’s girls

basketball team travelled to Terrigal to play the

top 8 teams in the state. We knew we would be

up against some really competitive teams but we

were feeling confident about the games ahead.

On Wednesday morning we got up, had

breakfast and were so pumped ready to play.

Our first game was against Oxyley High School

(from Tamworth), which we dominated

throughout the whole game and ended up

winning convincingly 54-39. It was a great start

to the tournament, going through to the next

round on a high.

Our next game was against Endeavour Sports

High School. We knew they were going to be

tough, but we just had to be tougher. We started

off well, leading at quarter time and by half time

the game was really close. Unfortunately in the

second half we got into foul trouble and went

down 79-53.

Our last game of the day was against West

Wylong High School. Playing 2 games earlier

that morning had left us very tired and we let

them get away. This game could have been ours

but it wasn’t to be and we lost 72-51.

The next morning we played for 5th and 6th

against Terrigal High. We were determined to

win and take 5th spot in the state and that is

what we achieved – winning 54-31.

It was a great couple of days away. Thanks to

Mrs McClelland, Miss Teague and the parents

who took the time to give us this wonderful

opportunity.

Literacy and

Numeracy Update What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy involves knowing how to use a

range of technologies to find information, solve

problems or complete tasks. Digital literacy is

also about knowing how to act safely and

respectfully online.

It is important that all children and young people

in Australia learn to become ‘digitally literate’ in a

safe and supportive environment, by engaging

with the materials, data, systems, tools and

equipment that are available in their schools and

communities.

In order to drive children’s digital literacy in

schools, Digital Technologies has been

developed as one of the learning areas of the

Australian Curriculum. Digital Technologies aims

to ensure that all students from Foundation to

Year 10 benefit from learning about and working

with traditional, contemporary and emerging

technologies. Digital Technologies focuses on

developing knowledge and understanding of data

and digital systems and the processes and

production skills involved in using digital

technology.

Further information on supporting your child in

being digitally literate as well as other handy tips

for assisting children throughout their education

can be found at: https://

www.learningpotential.gov.au/ and http://

www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/ (both available as

Apps from the App Store or Google Play).

PRINCIPAL’S PROSE

As I reflect on the

past 2 weeks at

Mulwaree High, I

am amazed at all

that has

happened. For

those who have

visited the school

recently you will

notice that the front Administration office has

had to relocate. The storm that occurred on 2nd

November caused flooding of the office and staff

common room. The carpet has had to be pulled

up due to major damage. The common room

carpet has been replaced and we are hoping the

office will be done soon so that staff can move

back in.

Our HSC students have finished all exams and

now look forward to their graduation evening

next week. We have already received word of

several of our students receiving university

places for 2018. Congratulations to those

students!

This week we welcomed our 2018 year 7

students and their families to the school for an

informal “Meet and Greet”, to find out about

BYOD, uniform and book packs.

It was great to see our students join other

schools on Q&A last Monday. To see public

school students speaking in such an articulate,

informed manner was a great testament to their

schools.

Mulwaree Rocks is coming up soon on Tuesday

28th November and people are encouraged to

get their tickets early. We will have new

projectors for the evening which will add to the

highlights of the evening.

Students in Years 7-10 will begin to have their

Swim Safely days over the next two weeks. It is

important that they bring appropriate gear,

sunscreen and a hat. Thanks to the PDHPE

faculty for organising these days.

And finally, Mr

Lieschke will be on

leave for the rest of

the year. Please direct

any DP enquiries for

students in years 7, 9

and 11 to Mrs

Gorman.

Warm regards

REMEMBRANCE REMEMBRANCE

MUSEUM MUSEUM

REVERIEREVERIE From the Friends of Mulwaree Museum (FOMM)

1914 – 15 STAR:

A campaign medal of the British Empire which

was awarded to officers and men of British and

Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the

First World War against the Central European

Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was

never awarded singly and recipients were also

awarded the British War Medal and the Victory

Medal.

(Information on these in future ‘Mulwaree Matters’.) The three medals were sometimes irreverently

referred to as Pip (the Star), Squeak (the BWM) and Wilfred (the Victory Medal) after three comic strip

characters, a dog, a penguin and a rabbit, which were popular in the immediate post-war era.

The 1914-15 Star was instituted in December 1918 and was awarded to officers and men of British and

Imperial forces who served between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915. The medal is a four-

pointed star of bright bronze, ensigned with a crown. The obverse has two crossed gladii (swords) with

their blades upwards, the points and grips of which form what might appear to be four additional points

to the star. The swords are overlaid by a wreath of oak leaves, with the Royal Cypher of King George V

at the base of the wreath and an overlaying central scroll inscribed “1914-15”.

The reverse is plain and is impressed with the recipient’s number, rank and name – in this case “ 2901

Pte. F.W. Gazzard 2/BN A.I.F”. Medal copies, including miniatures will not have the recipient’s name

on the medal.

The ribbon has the red, white and blue colours of the flag of the United Kingdom in shaded and watered

bands.
