“There are many little ways to enlarge your world. Love of books is the best of all” Jacqueline Kennedy 2020 Staff Recognition Week This week is SASS Recognition Week, we would like to acknowledge the wonderful contributions of our staff who work in the office, the school grounds, classroom settings, providing direct support to students and in other roles across the school. Our SASS staff are the backbone operation of the school and are appreciated greatly by the entire school community. They are an amazing group of people who work hard for our students, teachers and families. Congratulations Team Copa – Debating Congratulations to the Copacabana PS debating team who competed against Pretty Beach PS in Round 2 of the Premier’s Debating Challenge via Zoom. Copacabana was the affirmative team and compiled some convincing points of view on the topic: “That Year. 5&6 kids should have to cook dinner for their family one night a week”. Congratulations Eve, Liam, Matilda and Miller on your fine efforts. Thank you to Mr Frew who is our debating coach. Cross Country Cross Country will look a little different this year. Unfortunately, due to COVID guidelines, we are not allowed to have any spectators onsite. This will be a student and staff event only. We will make sure we take plenty of photos which will be included in our next newsletter. Thank you to Ms Robbins who has organised this event! Kindergarten Enrolments 2021 We are now taking Kindergarten enrolments for all students who are eligible to start school in 2021. Children are able to enrol in Kindergarten if they turn five years of age on or before 31 July in that year. Online Enrolments are now open. The online enrolment system is designed to provide flexibility for parents enabling them to submit an enrolment application online at the time that best suits them. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including IOS and Android. The online application process is currently restricted to:

Enrolments into local schools only

Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

Children who live in NSW.

We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. The online enrolment form can be downloaded from the Department’s ‘Going to a Public-school site’. For further information contact the school’s office on 4328 1766.

Drink bottles Please remember to send drink bottles to school with your children. For the health of our students the bubblers have been turned off and inaccessible. Birthdays Just a reminder, that no home cooked cakes be sent into school for your child’s birthday. Store bought cupcakes or individually wrapped items are preferable eg: Freddo Frogs. We apologise for any inconvenience. OC Test Venue To comply with the latest advice from NSW Health and to minimise the risk of COVID19 transmissions, the annual Opportunity Class Placement Test will now take place at a student’s own school rather than in examination centres where students from a variety of schools combine. To allow time for this change to be implemented, the test date is now the 18 November 2020. The department acknowledges the challenges faced by students during the pandemic response. The safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance. Marking of test and student placements will continue to be managed by the High Performing Students’ Team. Only students whose parents have received a confirmation email from this Team are eligible to sit the test on the new date. The application portal will not be re-opened for new applications. Placement in an opportunity class will be based solely on the results of this test to ensure the fair and consistent assessment of students across all schools and regions of NSW. As always, I thank each and every one of you for your patience and cooperation as we work through these unprecedented times. Yours in Education, Mary Hunt Principal

Online safety and appropriate use of digital devices Online safety is critical as students engage more frequently with the internet, social media and online educational tools. The government’s eSafety Commissioner website has some very useful information for parents: https://www.esafety.gov.au. How can you support your child? Parents are still the main source of advice and support when children are experiencing problems online.

Monitor children’s time online, particularly younger children – clear boundaries must be set

Talk to your child about staying safe as soon as they start becoming active in the online world

Set rules – what’s okay to do and what’s not, how much time is ‘online” time and what kind of

personal information is okay to make public.

Consider using filters/other technological tools to limit exposure to potentially distressing material

Model the kind of positive online behaviour you would like them to use

What to do if your concerned:

Ask questions and listen

Some of the behavioural changes described above are a normal part of growing up but if you are

concerned your child is struggling, try to find out why- there may be underlying issues such as

cyberbullying, friendship difficulties, or mental health issues.

As part of your conversation, ask your child about how much time they spend online and explain why

it is worrying and what they could be missing out on.

Signs that your child’s online activity may be having a negative impact on them or on your family include:

Tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches, eye sprain

Changes in eating patterns

Reduced personal hygiene

Extreme anger when being asked to take a break from the online activity

Appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer

Becoming withdrawn from friends and family

Lost Property We are receiving an increasing number of clothing items, lunch containers and drink bottles in lost property without names, It is requested that you clearly mark all your children’s items to ensure we can return them if found.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots at Copacabana Public School

This week the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow came out to Copacabana Public School for a special presentation to Kindergarten. Tennis Hotshots is again providing 30,000 racquets to foundation students around Australia, thanks to ANZ and Tennis Australia. Copacabana Public School were one of the lucky schools chosen to receive these racquets. This great opportunity gets our kids moving, both at home and at school! Our Kindy students were also given a special certificate to take home to celebrate with their new tennis racquets. A big thank you goes out to Tanya Murdoch, our district Tennis School Development Coordinator. We really appreciate your continued support of our up and coming tennis champions! Craig Mitchell

Avoca Before and After School Care News

This term has been moving along at a fast pace. The children have come back to school and school care with enthusiasm and plenty of energy. Homework It is lovely to see children wanting to do their homework at the centre. It is enjoyable for me to listen to children doing their home readers and moving forward to new levels. The kinder children have appeared to embrace their new found skills which brings me joy. We do homework at 4pm as this gives children time to have afternoon tea and socialise with their friends. The children sit at a table togetherand the older children get enjoyment out of helping the smaller children. Home readers are generally done outside on the seat, this way they are still enjoying the freedom of being outside and learning as well. Bulbs The bulbs we planted in vacation care have continued to give us joy as they come into flower. The smell is lovely and we have a display at the sign in sheet on the counter. The irises we planted many years ago continue to produce offspring which gives us plenty of colour around the garden. The veggie patch is also giving us snow peas. The children enjoy going and picking them and eating them straight from the patch. No chemicals or additives have been added. The choko vine just keeps giving. Parents if you would like some please give us a call and we will bag some up for you. Science week Last week was Science week. In collaboration with school we did some experiments ourselves. We learned how wind affects things, we made kites and paper planes which the children flew to see who could fly the longest. One child made more than 100 paper planes on the weekend to make sure he got it correct. Needless to say, his plane did win. The children got to see the effects of adding food colouring to water and watching flowers change colour. Those flowers are still alive and at the centre. The colours are so pretty. We will continue in vacation care with all things science. We have a teacher coming in to entertain and work with the children on some cool activities.

Vacation care Our program will be out in the next week filled with some fun days to keep your child busy. We have a few outside excursions that have followed the risk assessment criteria to ensure the safety of all children. The program will be posted on Facebook and sent to parents that attend the service. Anyone can come to vacation care and all rebates are given the same as a long day care and before and after school care. Entering the Centre I would like to remind all parents that no one is to enter the school through the school walk way. The Education Department has strong guidelines we must follow. To enter the grounds please use the path way near the tennis courts to our building. Only Authorized people dropping off or collecting children are able to enter the building, using hand sanitizer prior to signing their children in or out. The sign in area is limited to one person at a time. People entering the service unannounced must sign the visitors’ book. If you have any questions please email the service ([email protected]), we will address your needs and get back to you. Kind Regards Julee
