Both Boonville Pirates football coachDevin Brown and Mexico coach NickHoth said it may seem a little odd to seeeach other on opposite sides of the fieldFriday night as the Pirates battle theMexico Bulldogs in a NCMC showdownat the BHS Sports Complex. As the former coach at Mexico the last-

three years, where he sported a record of15-18, Brown said obviously it will beemotional seeing those kids and playingagainst those kids and then coachingagainst Coach Hoth, who was the defen-sive coordinator on his staff.“It’s going to be one of those games

where it’s like going up against yourbrother,” Brown said. “It’s fun but at thesame time you want to beat them andthey want to beat you. It’s going to becompetitive, emotions are going to behigh and it will be a hard hitting, fastplaying game.”Of course it could also mean the differ-

ence between winning a conference titleand playing second fiddle for the rest ofthe season. After winning on the road last week

against the Kirksville Tigers 48-7, the Pi-rates improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 inthe North Central Missouri Conference. The Mexico Bulldogs, meanwhile, fell tothe Centralia Panthers last week by ascore of 33-6 to drop to 2-2 overall. How-ever like Boonville, the Bulldogs are un-defeated in the conference at 1-0.Coach Hoth said in the game last week

against Centralia, the Panthers didn’t re-ally surprise them any. “They came out and ran about five

plays on us offensively,” Hoth said. “Theykept it simple. I thought we played reallywell defensively. We were able to matchtheir physical play up front for the mostpart. It seemed like we would get themin third and long and then we would letup for a second and they would convertor turn it into a big play. Really the de-fense was just on the field too long. Wecame out at them and were starting to

roll early on but we just couldn’t punchthe ball in the end zone in the first quar-ter. Centralia made adjustments afterthat to what we were doing to them of-fensively and they kind of stymied us fora while there, and really the big key wastheir offense kept the ball for a long timeand their defense was able to get on andoff the field quickly and we just playedtoo much defense that game.”So much so that Centralia racked up

over 400 yards in total offense comparedto just 180 yards for the Bulldogs. ThePanthers also led Mexico from the firstquarter on while leading 13-0 at the halfand then adding one score in the thirdquarter and two more touchdowns in thefourth quarter for the victory. With only 99 yards rushing in the

game, the Bulldogs were led by seniorrunning back Shia Miller, who rushed 17times for 75 yards. Senior quarterbackAustin Reed, meanwhile, completed 4 of10 passes for 38 yards while junior MattRidgway threw for 45 yards on 5 of 10 at-tempts.And when the Bulldogs did throw, sen-

ior Monterio Burton was the leading re-ceiver with two catches for 28 yards.Brown said having coached there the

last-three years some of the stuff offen-sively that Mexico runs is still the same.“They brought in a guy from Centralia

to be the offensive coordinator so theyrun a little big different offensivescheme,” Brown said. “Obviously, ShiaMiller is the guy you have to stop withthe ball. Austin Reed is a very good quar-terback and then you have Josh Harlananchoring the offensive line. They arealso going to get some guys back from acouple of injuries so they are going to bestronger up front than they have been thelast few weeks. The key for us defensivelyis that we have to limit Shia Miller andbe able to tackle when we get to him be-cause that’s the big thing, he can break itand take it to the house so we have to beable to tackle him and limit the big plays.’As for Mexico’s defense, Brown said

the Bulldogs will run multiple fronts andsend a lot of pressure. “The Harlan kid is a big guy up front

so we will have to stop him, and then

Austin Reed is a good corner again.Monterio Burton is also a good outsidelinebacker with a lot of speed, so youhave to know where those guys are at alltimes and be able to block them.”In the game last week against the

Kirksville Tigers, the Pirates may haveplayed their best game offensively whileracking up over 500 yards in total offensewhile holding the Tigers to a lone touch-down.Boonville also led in that game 28-0 at

the half and 41-0 after three quarters ofplay to force a running clock for a thirdstraight game.“We played a pretty good game and

Kirksville did some things defensively alittle bit different,” Brown said. “Theysent a lot of pressure but we were able topick up the pressure and handle it so thatwas good. But overall we were pleasedwith how we played because we thoughtit was going to be a close ballgame. Wehad some big plays and if you can get bigexplosive plays than that helps yourteam, especially offensively.”

Hoth said he knows the Pirates quite well, or should hesay he knows Coach Brown quite well.“I know Boonville runs a flexbone and a little veer op-

tion game,” Hoth said. “Offensively, Wes Davis at quar-terback is very dangerous so we are definitely aware ofhim. Boonville also has a couple of other guys in the back-field who are very strong runners, too. They are able todistribute the ball well and the kids run hard. However, Ithink a lot of that is due to the guys up front. The offen-sive line is pretty solid, especially on the right side. It’s asolid football team and they play very hard offensively. The key for us defensively is that we have to stop whateverthey are tying to do. In my opinion if we can shut downWes Davis and contain him, we are going to do just fine.If we can stop him from running the football or containhim at least we will do well.”Of course Hoth said the same could be said of the de-

fense. He said while the Pirates run a 4-3, they are also adisciplined football team and that everyone does their as-signments.“Wes Davis again stands out on defense,” Hoth said.

“He might be the best middle linebacker that we playagainst all year. He is very good and as a linebacker coach

you are impressed watching him. He is able to make be-cause of the players up front. They are clogging up gapsand another one of our former players up there right nowJay Barnhart at defensive end. I enjoy watching him flyaround and make plays. Again, Boonville is a very solidfootball team defensively and we will have our work cutout for us. We have speed, though. Most times we play it’shard for teams to match our speed so we have to get theball to our playmaker’s hands and in open space and letthem make plays.”Brown said obviously being 3-1 is better than 2-2 or 1-

3 or 0-4. While the Pirates would obviously like to havethe Pleasant Hill game back, sitting at 3-1 at this point inthe season is pretty good.“Obviously we aren’t satisfied,” Brown said. “We have to

be playing our best football in Week 8 and not now andwe have to improve every week. I just don’t know how ourkids are going to react to Homecoming this week. Home-coming is one of those things where it can go either way,so we will just have to wait and see.”Coach Hoth said obviously it’s a big game for the Bull-

dogs because they want to get back in the win column andkeep their record positive. “I think whoever can pull thisout is going to be one of the top teams in the conference,so it’s definitely a huge football game for us.”

Kendra Twenter may be a sophomoreat Central Methodist University inFayette. But when it came time to decidea theme for this year’s Homecoming atBoonville High School, Twenter andBoonville Student Council sponsor AbbyCourtney had a huge hand in coming upwith the slogan.Boonville Student Body President

Marissa Brown said Twenter actuallycame up with the theme, “Wish Upon AStar” during the summer.“The theme comes from Cinderella,”

Brown said. With that being said, you can imagine

the fun the student council had pickingthemes for Spirit Week. Headed byMichael Kelley, chair of spirit publicitycommittee, Brown said Spirit Week ac-tually kicked off on Monday with Nerd

Day. Brown said while a lot of studentschanneled their inner nerd, she also sawpeople with suspenders, glasses, highwatered jeans and a lot of sweaters.Of course just when you thought it

couldn’t get any better than that, Brownsaid Tuesday was Disney Dudes andDames Day, which led the students todress at their favorite disney charactersuch as Hercules’ mom, Aladdin andDalmations. On Wednesday during Villain Day,

Brown said she saw students dressed upin Star Wars outfits and Cruella De Vil

from 101 Dalmations. With the week half gone and students

spent from dressing up every day, imag-ine the excitement on Thursday duringDuo Day. Yes, that’s right. Batman andRobin and Peanut Butter and Jelly. If you thought that was hot than pic-

ture the bonfire later that evening at theBHS Sports Complex starting at 8 p.m.with the introduction of players andcomments from both former BoonvillePirates football coach Gene Reagan andteam captains. Also on Thursday, the student body

will get to cheer for their favorite Home-coming candidates during a pep assem-bly in the Windsor gymnasium at 2 p.m.This year’s Homecoming candidates

are Marie Gentry escorted by DyllanCrowley, Anna Kay escorted by EthanWeathers, Hunter McAreavy escorted byWes Davis, Kristen Stevens escorted by

Aron Widel and Madison Watson es-corted by Keith Poindexter.Fast forward to Friday, which is the

final day of Spirit Week and also CrazyBlue and White Day. Brown said stu-dents will go crazy on Friday not just be-cause they are wearing blue and whitebut also because they get out early for theparade downtown. The Homecoming parade will begin at

2:15 p.m. and will form on High Street.Once on High Street, the parade willtravel south on Main Street from thebridge to Walnut Street. With over 70entries in this year’s parade, Brown saidthe Grand Marshals will include 35 for-mer Homecoming queens along withclass floats, Pirate decorated vehicles, club banners and numerous other en-tries.

By Boonville football coach Devin BrownON OFFENSE...

We have to limit the number of mistakesand have them hopefully make a coupleof mistakes.

We have to be able to move the footballand keep them off the field.

ON DEFENSE...We have to keep running back Shia Millercontained as much as possible.

We have to be able to tackle well in theopen field when we get to the ball.
