GENERAL EXPLANATION OF CHAPTER-4

“INDIA - OUR COUNTRY”

Introduction: - India is a big country. It is

the seventh largest country in the

world. It is also the second most

populous country in the world after

China. The total population of India

is more than 125 crores. The capital of

India is New Delhi.

India became an independent country

on 15th August 1947. The government in

our country is elected by the people of

India. There are two types of

governments in our country – the Union

Government & the State Government.

Both work jointly to ensure the welfare

of the people of the country.

THE UNION GOVERNMENT

The Union Government is also called the

Central Government. The Union

Government controls the whole country.

The offices of the Union Government

are located in New Delhi, the capital of

our country.

The Union or the Central Government is

run by the President, the Vice-President,

the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet

Ministers. All of them live and work in

New Delhi.

It is difficult for the Central Government

to look after the needs and safety of all

the people. Thus to look after the needs

and welfare of the people properly, the

country has been divided into States and

Union Territories.

THE STATE GOVERNMENT

India is divided into 28 states and 9 Union Territories. Each state has its own elected government. The State Government is elected by the people living in that state. Every state also has a capital city.

The State Government is run by the Governor, the Chief Minister, other Ministers and the officers in the state. All of them live and work in the capital of

the state. The Union Government also helps the State Government when it is required.

UNION TERRITORIES

Apart from 28 states, there are 9 Union Territories in our country. These are controlled by the Union Government. Delhi is also a Union Territory and is called the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
