With Ms Daly we were kept busy. We mostly did normal work, but she taught us to make bas- kets out of raffia, which she learnt to do when she went to Alice Springs in Cen- tral Australia, the Aboriginal ladies taught her. After she taught us how to make them, it’s been raffia, raffia, raffia. Another cool thing she’s done with us is music. We’ve learnt lots of songs with a guitar accompanying us because she can play the guitar. Some of the songs we’ve learnt are Home Among The Gumtrees, What a Wonderful World, Aint No Sunshine, I Can See Clearly Now and King of the Road. We sang some of the songs at an assembly. Having Ms Daly has been fun and I hope she comes for a visit again. Our school cross country was held last Thursday at Bruns beach. Having Ms Daly has been fun and I hope she comes for a visit again.

Our school cross country was held last Thursday at Bruns beach. It was a lovely sunny day and everyone enjoyed the run or in some cases the walk. Have a look at the following pictures. All the winners and placegetters are off to Dur-rumbul for the district cross country next Friday.

  • Principal’s Comment Dear Parents/Guardians, It is with much sadness I write on the passing of Edyn Fawcett. Edyn was a student at our school as was her brother Shannon. Together with their mother, Robyn, they were a well-loved family and vital part of our school community. Edyn passed away last Friday after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The disease that took her life never touched her spirit or her zest for life, as you can see in the photo below. It may have changed her appearance but it never touched her beauty.

Edyn was an inspiration to everyone who knew her and leaves a great big hole. Our thoughts and wishes go out to Robyn and Shannon at what is a very difficult time. Edyn’s funeral will be on tomorrow at 1:00p.m. at Mul-lum lawn cemetery followed by an afternoon of cele-bration of Edyn’s life at the Brunswick Bowling Club. Whilst many of our staff will be attending these events, arrangements have been made for lessons to continue at school. Every year students in Years 3 and 5 across Australia complete literacy and numeracy tests called NAPLAN. They are tests that provide a snapshot of an individual student’s performance on a given day. The do not give the total picture of the child and their progress nor do they give an overall picture of the school and its per-formance. Unfortunately the Federal Government’s ‘MySchool’ website relies almost exclusively on NAPLAN data to give their impression of whole school performance. Despite the very limited nature of this data it is in-creasingly being used by media organisations and others to rank schools in “league tables”. The damage that can potentially be done by “naming and shaming” schools with lower test scores can be significant. For this reason teacher unions across the country have placed a moratorium on NAPLAN. At Brunswick school this means that teachers will not be assisting the running of the tasks that make up NAPLAN. These tasks will still go ahead at this stage under supervision of trained staff – just not your child’s regular teacher.

Have a great week. Mick Channells

PS The Dragons dined on fricasseed fish last week and will follow it up with some Brookvale fried bird this week.

Impact Leadership Conference On Tuesday 27th May our school leaders Renee Gollan-Essex, Azlan Currie, Kaine Guyler and Riz Mahoney went to Twin Towns for an Impact Leadership conference. The Impact Leadership team consisted of Andy, Jen and the “loud noise boys” Ronan and Mason. At the beginning we received book-lets and pens that said “Impact Leadership”. The booklets had worksheets to do with the program inside them. We met other leaders and did activities, like games and hands on tasks, all to do with different aspects of a great leader. It was an excel-lent day, where we learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We would highly recommend it to any school with aspiring leaders. By Renee & Azlan. Walk Safely To School Day

The Walk Safely to School Day is held through-out NSW TOMORROW Friday 7th May 2010. Its aim is to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with their child/ren to reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. We hope you can participate in this very rele-vant event promoting community road safety

and health. Stickers will be given to all students who partici-pate. The key road safety messages are: Hold a grown up’s hand when you cross the road. Hold a grown up’s hand when you’re on the footpath. Use a safe place to cross the road. Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time you cross the road. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary—Kindergarten to Yr 2 Next Thursday 13th May 2010 our Kindergarten to Yr 2 stu-dents will be travelling by bus to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanc-tuary. This is a great excursion and we would like to see all students participate. If you have any problems with the cost, please contact the office. Notes and payment must be made to the office by Tuesday 11th May 2010 and students will need to be picked up at school at approximately 3.45pm. Stewart House Donation Drive There are a few spare envelopes at the office. Stewart House is a fantastic organisation which supports over 1800 public school children annually who experience a healthy and much needed break at Stewart House. Please support this worthy cause and also have a chance to win a $4,000 holiday for your family to the destination of your choice!! Envelopes must be returned by Friday 14th May to be in-cluded in the draw.

Travel will be by bus and the cost is $10.00 per student. Notes have gone home and there are spares kept at the of-fice. Good luck to all those competing and well done. Please return notes to the office by Tuesday 11th May so we can send off the list of competitors Light Up When Riding!! The Ride2School program is urging all bike riders to light up during dusk, dawn, darkness and during conditions of poor visibility such as fog or heavy rain. National regulations require the following. The rider of a bicycle must not ride at night, or reduced visi-bility, unless the bicycle or rider displays: A flashing or steady white light that is clearly visible for at

least 200 m from the front of the bicycle and A flashing or steady red light that is clearly visible for at

lease 200m from the rear of the bicycle and A red reflector that is clearly visible for at least 50m from

the rear of the bicycle when light is projected onto it by a vehicle’s headlight on low beam.

Penalties are $56 for each offence = $112 for a rider with no front or rear light. Newsletter Advertising Anyone who is wishing to advertise on the back page of our newsletter has only one week left to get it in before the new print happens for the coming year. If you are interested in placing an annual advertisement which goes out to all families and staff at our school by pa-per and is emailed to subscribers every week needs to con-tact Australian Newsletter Service on 1800 245 077. The Young Bruns The Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce and Bruns-wick Heads Public School will partner with industry profes-sionals to make a television commercial. The program aims to create rich, interesting learning opportunities for BH school students. It works across the curriculum to inspire local children to focus on what they have rather than what they don’t have. Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) students will write, produce, direct, perform in and assist with editing their own 30 second com-mercial—and have a lot of fun doing it! The theme of the commercial will be Simple Pleasures. The message is that there is a lot for young people and their families to do in BH, on holidays as well. Students will work on the project for 1 to 2 hours per week throughout Term 2. It is hoped that a screening of their work will take place early in Term 3. Please direct any en-quiries to Lanie Loughlin on Mondays and Tuesdays on 6685 1003.
