Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few o!ensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.

Yet it’s likely that most Falcon fans have no idea who Belser is. That’s fine. Belser, you see, takes it all in stride. He’s very familiar with the term anonymity and has been for quite some time. He un-derstands his role on the team and does it week in and week out to near perfec-tion.

the other guys like the quarterback and the skill position players look good,” said a laughing Belser, who is entering his third season as FSU’s starting o!en-sive center. “The fact that no one really knows who I am doesn’t bother me at

and I try each and every play to do it to the best of my ability.”

But let Belser make one mistake with a rare bad snap and all of a sudden he be-comes the focal point for angry fans.

“When that happen everybody imme-diately knows who you are and is look-ing for you,” said Belser. “They may not know you by name, but they’re quick to

“That’s life, though, as an o!ensive line-men. You can do countless things right that tend to get overlooked, but if you do one thing wrong you get noticed quickly. That’s why we’re kind of a di!er-ent breed of player on the o!ensive line. We don’t play for the so-called fame. We tend to do a lot of the dirty work. To be honest I like that.”

Belser not only likes it, he’s very good at what he does and his role is far more

simply snapping the football every play.

“Garon and I have a great relationship both on and o! of the field,” said FSU sophomore quarterback Cooper Hibbs. “He’s one of the first guys when I got

here who really made an e!ort to help me feel comfortable starting as a true freshman at quarterback. He’s always supporting me and picking me up even when I play bad. Take our opener for ex-ample. I threw four interceptions and he was still patting me on the back saying ‘It’s okay, you’re fine put it behind you and let’s go.’

“I have a lot of faith and trust in him. He’s a very intelligent player. He makes all of the calls for the o!ensive line and he honestly knows exactly what each and every position along the o!ensive front is supposed to be doing. He’s a good player for us and he’s a guy who probably doesn’t get the credit or recog-nition that he deserves for his play.”

FSU senior o!ensive guard Tyler Thomp-son agrees.

“The best thing about playing with Ga-ron is you never have to worry about where he’s at or what he’s doing,” said Thompson. “You can absolutely count on him every play. I know I can take my steps and he’ll fit right in. He knows the plays, he knows the calls and he knows what everyone is supposed to be do-ing.”

“He’s also a pretty tough and crafty player. He’s not the biggest o!ensive lineman, but he uses his quickness and his speed to his advantage. He gets on guys pretty quickly and he’ll get up un-derneath them. He’s also a pretty hard-nosed competitor. You don’t see him missing practice or missing plays.”

Belser was born in Fairbanks, Alaska when his father was stationed there with the United State Army. The fam-ily moved to Germany for a year when Belser was two and then settled in North Port, Fla. where he grew up and starred in football in high school at North Port.

In high school his o!ensive line coach was former FSU all-conference o!ensive lineman Jimmy Young, who played for the Falcons from 1993-96. It was Young who turned him onto Fairmont State.

“Coach Young sent my film up here to (former FSU) coach (Mike) Lopez and they immediately invited me up here for a visit,” said Belser. “I liked the school and campus and I really liked the size of the town. It kind of reminded me a little

I came.”

It didn’t take Belser long to get on the field either. He saw action in six games as a true freshman and ended up start-ing Fairmont’s final two games of the 2011 season at tackle. The following spring he took over at center and has been a mainstay there ever since for FSU.

“Center is where I’m most comfortable,” admitted Belser, who is listed as being 6-3 and 275 pounds, but likely doesn’t weigh that much. “It’s where I’ve always played since I was little. I kind of had the position thrust upon me because I was a bigger kid and I’ve really grown to love it.”

“A lot of people will tell me now you don’t look big enough to be a college

chip on my shoulder. Just because I’m not that big, doesn’t mean I’m not good and I can’t play ball. Honestly, that’s al-ways been a motivator for me. It makes me play that much harder. I always feel like I have to prove myself and I kind of

will graduate from FSU in December of 2015. In the future he says he’d eventu-ally like to coach football wherever an opportunity presents itself.

For now, though, he’s the center of at-tention for the Falcons.
