It is always the way: put yourself on the line and declare Spring arrived, and nature throws it right back at you with force and an ironic smile. From the tempting climes of spring right back into the snow and wind of winter. From now on I think I will leave the weather to the meteorologists. Martisor Day Celebrations Thankfully the weather at the start of the week was lovely for Martisor Day, organised this year once again by the PTF, and in particular Claudia Marta, with the help of Year 5 Teacher Rebecca Hunter and the support of the entire IBSB Primary Team. The children in the Primary School enjoyed a non uniform day, but had to come in dressed in either red of white, with the majority of the children having their photo taken by a professional photographer. There were special workshops arranged by Light into Europe and Touched Romania, and also a special painting workshop, and all the female staff received Martisor gifts from the students and staff- a very successful and thoroughly enjoyable day for all. Later in the week Claudia also helped to arrange a visit by a very special guest, Adina Rosetti, author of “Domnisoara Poimaine si Joaca de-a Timpul”, and the London School of Economics The best part about the job of teacher is receiving good news from students when they discover that their university applica- tion was accepted, and that they have moved a step closer toward realising their future dreams. The hardest part for many teachers is when you have to be there to support a student when they receive news that their application was not accepted for some- thing they had their heart and mind set on. With this in mind, I would like to congratulate Sonia Savin, Deputy Head Girl 2013-14, who graduated last year and was accepted into Queen Mary Uni- versity, for not giving up on her dream to go to LSE. Sonia reapplied this year to transfer to LSE and just this week received news that her application was accepted. Well done Sonia! children had the chance to buy one of her books and to have it personally signed. Some of our children and parents also donated books to the school library, and of course we had a visit form William Hussey, all the way over from England to run some special writing workshops for our children in Years 6-13. There were guest visits for careers advice in the Secondary School, assemblies, Student Council meetings, and much much more to make this week all in all one of the busiest on the school calendar. Woman’s Day All our parents also received a present to celebrate Woman’s Day on March the 8th, courtesy of Eden Spa & Happy Cora Pilates - Happy Mother’s Day! PTF Sunday Brunch this weekend And last but not least, the PTF has organised a IBSB Brunch on Sunday– sponsored in part by BCR- at the Intercontinental Hotel with many staff and parents booked in, so it should be a great afternoon for everyone going. Congratulations to all those who took part in the Winter Tri Challenge. It was a wonderful day out, and a great way to kick off spring fitness training. Well done especially to Mr Hewett for winning his age group and coming 4th overall . A big thank you to Paul Georgescu for arranging the IBSB teams and motivating us to participate, and to Mr Cohen from Diamond for sponsoring the tops– the IBSB teams all looked amazing! Have a great weekend with friends and family and we look forward to seeing many of you at the Sunday brunch and some of you in school on Wednesday morning 8.45-9.45 am for the EYFS/Yr 1 Parent Workshop. Warm regards, Mr Kendall Peet Ms Aura Bogdan Head of School Executive Director

Head of Primary Message

This has been a very busy and very happy week in the Primary School, focusing on the lovely celebration of Spring with Martisor and the fascinating world of books through World Book Day. We are most grateful for all the support of you parents for the photographer to capture the beautiful children on our Martisor day, to facilitate the visit of William Hussey on Wednesday and to provide us all with the lovely experience of Adina Rosetti on Thursday.

This was the first year the school has welcomed a British author and it was lovely to see Year 6 and Year 7 work together with such an eloquent, successful writer, learning from him how important it is to do careful research before embarking on even fictional writing, and immersing themselves in witch hunting during the time of Seventeenth Century England. We look forward to seeing the children's writing inspired by this experience. Ms Rosetti gave us a very different experience through her magical children's tale originally created for her daughter, based on time. The book itself is a work of art and certainly inspires me to try to master sufficient Romanian to read it properly.

Throughout the week there have been extra book activities in school ranging from reading based on our topics, or just for pleasure, to writing books for younger children. The sponsored activities at the end of the week drew our attention to those children in other parts of the world whose lives lack the richness that each book provides for its reader. It is always so rewarding to see how our children from relatively comfortable lives empathise with those who have so little and respond by being incredibly generous. I am constantly reminded of the warm hearts and many kindnesses of our extended family here at IBSB.

The week may have ended with rain and a promise of snow to come, but there is real warmth and renewal in school, tinged a little by the mad colour of Holi - the Indian celebration marked today. We look forward to another wonderful week in which our parents will share another excellent workshop from Ms Manuela on Wednesday.

Guest Speakers

This week we were lucky enough to have several visitors to the School. On Wednesday William Hussey a renowned author of children thriller books came to talk to students about his books and how students can put their ideas to paper. Students really enjoyed his talk as well as the theatrics that accompanied the presentation. After this we had Smaranda Nicolau, an actress from Mindstage Acting School and writer come to speak to year 7 & 8. Although this was only a short talk, she managed to enthuse out students about writing and acting as well as being interested in reading.

Our final presentation was led by Ms

Marta Claudia & Mr Andrei Cohn

who both gave up their time to talk

to Business students from year 10

and 11 and proved another useful

supplement to their theoretical

Countdown to Exams

IBSB will confirm in a separate email dates for practical exami-

nations and orals as well as the start of the written papers.

However, all students entered should have received an entry

notification with the dates of the examinations.

Assessment Dates A few students were absent for assessment week this half term and have struggled to firstly prepare for the examinations as well as find time to actually take the exams. These final weeks of the term or are reserved for formative assessments and are an excellent way for students and staff to evaluate their pro-gress and look at ways to improve for the next time. Clearly missing part or all of these assessments will have an affect on the student learning.

Below are the dates for the forthcoming examinations. For the Cambridge Examinations, please refer to your statements of entry for exam dates and times.

Wishing you a relaxing weekend. Robert Hewett
