Week #2 Quarter 2 (10/21)
To Do Today:*Practice Lewis Dot structure
Fact of the DayThe element Californium is a radioactive metallic chemical element with the symbol Cf and atomic number 98 it is often called the most expensive substance in the world (as much as $68 million for one gram.)
Today in I.S.…I.S. Learning Goal:•I can describe the features and components of the atom. •I can apply models to features of an atom
Warm Up Question: Explain the difference between a group and a period on the periodic table.
Homework: None
Periods •Each row is called a “period”
1st Period = 1 Shell
2nd Period = 2 Shells
3rd Period = 3 Shells
4th Period = 4 Shells
•The elements in each period have the same number of shells
Periodic table of elements video http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/periodictableofelements/
Groups
•Each column is called a “group”
•Each element in a group has the same number of electrons in their outer orbital, also known as “shells”.
Group 1 = 1 electron
Group 2 = 2 electrons
Group 8 = 8 electronsExcept for He, it has 2 electrons
•The electrons in the outer
shell are called “valence electrons”

Transition Metals•Transition Metals have slightly different rules for shells and valence electrons.

Week #2 Quarter 2 (10/22)
To Do Today:*Practice Lewis Dot structure*Begin drawing of Bohr models
Fact of the DayThere are 86,400 seconds in a dayEarth is gradually slowing down. Every few years, an extra second is added to make up for lost time
Today in I.S.…I.S. Learning Goal:•I can describe the features and components of the atom. •I can apply models to features of an atom
Warm Up Question: From the periodic table name 2
elements that are liquid, 2 solids and 2 gasses
Homework: None
7
Lewis Structures1) Find your element on the periodic table.2) Determine the number of valence electrons.3) This is how many electrons you will draw.
Put onto back of “Find that Element!” handout
8
Lewis Structures
• Find out which group (column) your element is in.
• This will tell you the number of valence electrons your element has.
• You will only draw the valence electrons.
The Lewis structure was named after Gilbert N. Lewis, who introduced it in his 1916 article The Atom and the Molecule.[4] They are similar to electron dot diagrams in that the valence electrons in lone pairs are represented as dots, but they also contain lines to represent shared pairs in a chemical bond (single, double, triple, etc.).

10
Lewis Structures1) Write the element
symbol.2) Carbon is in the 4th
group, so it has 4 valence electrons.
3) Starting at the right, draw 4 electrons, or dots, counter-clockwise around the element symbol.
11
Lewis Structures1) Check your work.2) Using your periodic
table, check that Carbon is in the 4th group.
3) You should have 4 total electrons, or dots, drawn in for Carbon.

Week #2 Quarter 2 (10/23&24)
To Do Today:*Complete Lewis dot structures*Begin drawing of Bohr models
Fact of the DayMosquitoes like the scent of estrogen, hence, women get bitten by mosquitoes more often than men do.
Today in I.S.…I.S. Learning Goal:•I can describe the features and components of the atom. •I can apply models to features of an atom
Warm Up Question:Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for
the elements: Sr, Sn, I
Homework: name and symbol quiz Friday. Elements 1-10

Back of page 10 Lewis Dot practice• Groups= number of valence e-• Periods= number of rings around nucleus of atom
• Each ring/energy level can hold a certain number of e-• Period 1 can hold a max of 2e-• Period 2 can hold a max of 8e-• Period 3 can hold a max of 18e-• Period 4 can hold a max of 32e-• Period 5 can hold a max of 18e-• Period 6 can hold a max of 8e-• Period 7 can hold a max of 2e-
Bohr Diagrams
1) Find your element on the periodic table.2) Determine the number of electrons – it is the
same as the atomic number.3) This is how many electrons you will draw.
Bohr Diagrams• Find out which period
(row) your element is in.
• Elements in the 1st period have one energy level.
• Elements in the 2nd period have two energy levels, and so on.

Bohr Diagrams
C
1) Draw a nucleus with the element symbol inside.
2) Carbon is in the 2nd period, so it has two energy levels, or shells.
3) Draw the shells around the nucleus.
Bohr Diagrams
1) Add the electrons.2) Carbon has 6
electrons.3) The first shell can only
hold 2 electrons.C
Bohr Diagrams
1) Since you have 2 electrons already drawn, you need to add 4 more.
2) These go in the 2nd shell.
3) Add one at a time -starting on the right side and going counter clock-wise.
C
Bohr Diagrams
1) Check your work.2) You should have 6 total
electrons for Carbon.3) Only two electrons
can fit in the 1st shell.
4) The 2nd shell can hold up to 8 electrons.
5) The 3rd shell can hold 18, but the elements in the first few periods only use 8 electrons.
