Busy Bee

Our grounds man John Hogan has been away sick for the past seven weeks. There will be a busy bee

at school on Saturday 12th October from 8am in the morning. If you are unable to make that time

there will be a few jobs to complete from 4-5.30pm on Thursday 10th October. There will be lots of

minor jobs to complete, digging, sweeping, painting, placing mulch in gardens, rubbish removal and

working on the new playground for our students to enjoy. If we have 40 people give one hour each,

it is equivalent to a whole week’s work.

Sustainability

Our Year 6 and Year 2 classes have planted silver

beet, Year 5’s planted corn and petunias, Year 4D

have planted potatoes. Our worms are busy

harvesting of fruit and vegetable scraps while we

await the arrival of our chooks next term.

Term 4

School commences on Tuesday 15nd October

and concludes on Friday 13 December with the

P&F colour run in the afternoon. The Year 6 class leave for camp in Perth on Tuesday 15 October

and the Sacrament of Confirmation is on Saturday 26 October.

Hopefully you can all spend some restful quality family time during the holidays. We look forward to

seeing you all bright eyed and bushy tailed in Term 4 wearing the school summer uniform. (Naturally

there is a two-week transition from winter to summer uniforms).

Official Opening of library Extension and Year 5 &6 Classes

The Executive Director of CEWA, the Bishop of Bunbury and a number of other local dignitaries will

be attending the official opening of our ‘new’ buildings on Friday 25 October, commencing at

1.30pm. Parents are most welcome to attend the opening.

Did You Know?

• Mrs. Leahy (PP) and Georgia (6) are left-handed.

• Tao (6) is a champ at maths rules knowing that you always need to work out the brackets

first.

• Emma (K) emptied the sand out of her shoes at 12.17 pm last Monday.

• All Polar bears are left-handed.

• Our NAPLAN results are something we can all be proud of.

• Finn and Luca (1) have been helping Mrs. Bradley with her reading. Finn can read 42 words

in 30 seconds.

NAPLAN Results 2019

We are thrilled with our latest NAPLAN recent for 2019!

Although this is only one form of assessment that informs and gives feedback to

our teaching, we are really proud of our continued improvement each year over the past 5 years.

This year both the Year Three and Five results achieved above the National average in all areas of

the NAPLAN testing (Grammar, Numeracy, Spelling, Reading and Writing) as well being above the

average result of similar schools and Catholic Education School.

I believe that this is a clear reflection of the dedication from our teaching staff by:

▪ Forming positive relationships with students and with each other

▪ Knowing their students

▪ Specific and detailed planning

▪ Appropriately choosing from a range of teaching and learning strategies

▪ Designing rich learning experiences with clear learning intentions

▪ Effectively using student data and assessment

▪ Utilising the class environment

▪ Engaging students with their learning

▪ Engaging in high quality professional learning

It is a real privilege being part of the leadership of our staff, and these recent results (of which we

have been inching closer towards each year) consolidate what we already know, and that is that

we have a professional, dedicated and committed team.

At OLC we are always looking for the Spirit of Jesus in each other

in how we greet, treat and speak to people. We have been

reminding students that we should always have an “attitude of

gratitude” and that attitudes are contagious. It has been lovely

to see parents nominating students for their actions observed

when they have been around the school. We have also had a

lot of nominations for our teachers from parents and students

who are noticing the Spirit of Jesus through their actions. It is

amazing how the more we look, the more we see!

In the last fortnight we have had 101 nominations for our Spirit of

Jesus awards. Keep up the great work everyone!

FACTION TOKEN TALLY

This Friday we will reveal the Faction token tally leader, who will enjoy free dress next Friday.

Students are rewarded with tokens for demonstrating the Spirit of Jesus, following the school rules

and for demonstrating our school values of Compassion, Appreciation, Respect and Excellence.

There’s still plenty of time to add to the tally!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Thank you for your generous donations to our Christmas Shoebox

initiative. You are sure to put a smile on the face of a child who

may not have otherwise received a Christmas gift this year.

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY

The month of October is dedicated to praying the Holy

Rosary, which is a special prayer to Mary our Mother. We are

lucky to have the help of Mrs. Sherylee Tutt and Mrs. Robyne

De Garis from our parish who will be helping to teach the

Year 3 students the process and prayers of the Rosary. On

Friday the 18th of October these students will join other

children around the world in praying for unity and peace.

Thank you to Mrs. Tutt and Mrs De Garis for volunteering their

time. Parents are more than welcome to join in praying the

rosary. Please email me for details if you would like to

participate.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

• End of Term Thanksgiving Mass: Please feel welcome to

join us for our end of term Thanksgiving mass at the

church next Friday at 9.30am. We’d love to see you

there.

Can You Help?

Our Parish is in desperate need of someone with an accounting background to come on board the

Parish financial committee. Please contact me at [email protected] if you can assist.

Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

God Bless, Mrs. Amie Meyer, OLC Religious Education Coordinator.

The Athletics Carnival next Tuesday 24th September will start at 9.15am and

will run until approximately 2pm.

Please come and “Scream for your Team” and enjoy the day. To help with the

organisation and smooth running of the day, please read the information

included below.

• Students are to wear their sports uniform with their faction coloured t-shirt.

Coloured hair spray is not permitted however coloured zinc may be worn.

Faction coloured mascots may be brought to decorate faction bays.

• Parents are asked to sit on the car park side of the track in the area designated by the bunting.

• Due to the large number of students in a confined space, parents are asked not to visit the faction

bays while the carnival is in progress.

• Siblings are not to visit the faction bays or play on the track during the events as this can distract

participants and cause confusion in the bays.

• Please don’t allow the small children to play with the bunting as it can be easily damaged.

• Students will need to take their bags with them to the oval so they can have drinks and morning

tea.

• Please apply sunscreen to your child before they leave home in the morning. Extra screen will be

available in the faction bays.

• Parents may take their children straight home after the sports if they wish. Please inform your

child’s class teacher if you are taking your child home early, by completing the form below and

returning to your child’s teacher and ensuring you see the teacher at the end of the carnival to

mark them off the roll.

• No one is to go into the area at the finish line, as this can be very disruptive for the officials. Please

do not try to take photographs or videos in this area.

• There will be a parent’s leader ball event at the end of the sports. Each faction will need eight

parents in the team. Start practicing your throwing and catching now!

• The program for will be posted on our website tomorrow.

• A reminder that there will be coffee/tea and cake available for $5 and a sausage sizzle ($3) on

the day. Orders for the sausage sizzle (with payment) to the canteen tomorrow or classes up until

Monday. Parents can purchase a sausage in a bun direct on the day.

We would also welcome and greatly appreciate any parent helpers who can assist in the setting up

on the oval for the Athletics Carnival at 7.30am on Tuesday.

School Run4Fun Colour Explosion is as a major fundraiser this term so

we do ask for your support. The more money we raise the more

wecan provide for the students through vital school projects, in

particular new sports equipment, library books and year 5&6 camps.

The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on the last day of

term 4, 13 December 2019. We do ask that you bring a spare change

of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt as the students

will be covered in powder from head to toe. The day’s focus is on fun

and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.

Colour Powder

The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made

of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and
