Scrubbing SystemsMarine Industries – An alternate solution

to using Marine Gas Oil

www.croceanx.com

November 15, 1917

ü Roots dating back to 1917 – continuously owned

and managed by the original Croll and Reynolds

families (now in 3rd generation)

ü Original business was the design and supply of

Process Vacuum Systems

ü Supplied thousands of Scrubbers since 1950

ü For Marine, selling Proprietary Design Closed

loop, Open loop and Hybrid Wet Scrubbing

Systems to allow the shipping industry meet

2015 and 2020 requirements while using

low cost High Sulfur fuels

CHALLENGES WITH USING SCRUBBER SYSTEMS & SOLUTIONS

1. SPACE ON-BOARD

Installation can be in sections

Scrubber lower section

2.PRESSURE DROP

ΔP = K V2

V – Volumetric gas flow

3.SOUND ATTENUATION

Highly dependent on configuration :• Engine type• Vibrations• Supports• Insulation

Removal of old silencer

“Measurement results show clearly that scrubbers are more efficient in reducing noise from main engines than silencers, especially when scrubbers are run with water. The difference in overall sound pressure levels is approximately 2 to 3 dB and up to 4 to 5 dB in 31,5 Hz, 50 Hz and 63 Hz third octave bands. Scrubbers used with running water are more efficient in reducing noise than scrubbers used in dry mode. Scrubbers used in dry mode are more efficient than silencers, even though the difference is small (approx. 1 dB in overall sound pressure levels).”

Below is a summary of sound tests that were conducted on another CROE® installation (2 ME with silencers, 2 ME with CROE®

scrubbers) :

4. Power consumption

Solution : Control strategies can be put in place to optimize Power consumption

Solution : Switching between ECA & NON ECA Mode can be provided to save on power consumption

5. Downtime

Solution:

• Redundancy in equipment should be supplied

• Critical spares should be Identified & made available

6. Manhours to operate Scrubber

Solution:

• Fully automatic operation of scrubber should be made available

7. Other Key points to be considered

• Getting an Engineering company lined-up

• Identifying spaces and piping route for all ancillaries during 3D scanning & modelling

• Booking a slot with Shipyard

• Maintaining a clear scope of work between engineering company, installer and the scrubber provider

• Meeting the prescribed installation time during dry docking of ship or using riding crew

• Training of Ship crew

• Getting MARPOL documents certified & Class approval
