The General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR is a regulation by which Europe intend to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the EU.

It also addresses export of personal data outside the EU. The primary objectives of the GDPR are to give citizens back the control of their personal data and to simplify

the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU.

The regulation was adopted on 27 April 2016. It enters into application 25 May 2018 after a two-year transition period and, unlike a directive, it does not require any

enabling legislation to be passed by national governments.

This means that companies have a bit less than one year to comply to this GDPR.

11:00 - 11:30Matthias Dobbelaere-Welvaert

Managing Partner @ theJurists Europe

The rules of the game change, but you can still play alongThe GDPR brings a long-awaited harmonization of data

protection regulation in the EU, and will enter into effect in May 2018. For many businesses, ranging from SME to large

multinational corporations, this raises a lot of questions about what they can or cannot do when processing

personal data. Indeed, the rules of the game will change, and businesses should start preparing for those changes.

Most importantly, the GDPR will impose strict transparency and communication obligations towards consumers,

followed by hefty fines for the transgressors. What are these obligations, and what do they entail? How can a

business check if it’s GDPR-compliant, and how can it remedy this if it isn’t? That will be the core of this

presentation.

About Matthias Dobbelaere-Welvaert

- Managing Partner of theJurists Europe, a legal firm with offices in Ghent, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and London, specialized in IT and IP law. theJurists is working hard on a “tech orientated” approach.

- Professor Copyright and Mediarights at Erasmus Brussels

- Board member of FeWeb (Federation of Web Developers)

- Studied at the University of Ghent (Master in Laws) and University of Leuven (Postgraduate Studies in ICT and Media Law).

11 months to go! Why you should act now…The recently discussed new privacy rules from the GDPR will bring a lot of new commitments to almost all companies in Europe, from big to small, both online

and offline, as of May 2018. Both in terms of processes within the company, and in terms of information obligations to consumers or "stakeholders", a lot of things change. Privacy Impact Assessment, Data Breach Notification, Data

Processing Log, Profiling, Privacy by Design and By Default,... The expensive terms are hardly counted and will give many

businesses headaches. Bart Van den Brande is managing partner of law firm

Sirius Legal, who is very active in data protection in the advertising sector and the broad Internet world.

From his experience, Bart tells you what the impact of the GDPR is on your company and what you need

to do to ensure that you meet the new rules to comply by May 2018.

15:30 - 16:00Stephanie Raets, Senior Associate @ Claeys & Engels

GDPR impact on HR policyAs employee data are processed on a larger scale than any other kind

of personal data in most companies, the target of getting GDPR compliant often ends up at the desk of the HR professionals. The field

of data protection is not new. However, as the sanctioning risk in Belgium has always been very low in the past, this has not been a top

priority for most companies. This will all change with the application of the GDPR, or at least that is what Europe is striving for: a

harmonized approach in all countries with a higher risk of penalties. After briefly reminding you of the basic principles which are

largely retained, Stephanie will focus on the primary changes introduced by the GDPR (such as increased rights for employees, as well as higher duties for employers) to

conclude with a clear to-do list to make sure that your HR policy will be GDPR proof on the target

date of May 25th 2018.

Breaking the silos between marketing and sales, thanks to GDPR

In most companies, departments are still working in silos. And sales and marketing are a good example of that.

Thanks to GDPR, both departments have to speak about data. They have to find out how they will manage, gather and use that data. An overview of how a company should

act on that one.

About Sophie Angenot

Sophie has more than a decade of experience in Data Quality. She built that experience at companies like Dun&Bradstreet and Bisnode Belgium. She’s also the president of DQA, the Belgian Data Quality Association, that she founded in 2012. DQA’s goal is to bring together business and IT people that care about and need good data. And to share experiences and knowledge, through seminars and a yearly congress in October, where a Data Quality Award is also granted, to support companies that invest in Data Quality.

QuaData was her next challenge. She founded the business consultancy company in 2014. As Managing Partner, Sophie is working together with the QuaData consultants to help customers become champions In Data Quality, Master Data Management, Data Governance. Since the very beginning the consultants were certified as Data Protection Officers, because the best way of becoming GDPR compliant is by governing your data, and that is the core business of the company. …if it is not part of your end-to-end strategyNowadays an end-to-end security strategy is mandatory if you

want to cope with both mass attacks -like ransomware- and targeted attacks –including social engineering-

And we believe that the endpoint is becoming more and more a crucial component for this.

After this 30 minute session you will have a clear view on: - What is an end-to-end strategy exactly?

- Why an end-to-end strategy and why back to the endpoint? - Which other components to include?

But we go further than the theoretical talk, we also show products and components that put this into action!!

14:00 - 14:30Jan Guldentops

CEO & Researcher @ B.A.Common sense and technical solutions applied

to GDPRIn a practical introduction Jan will explain from his experience in the trenches of IT

security how to answer all those difficult questions the new European legislation brings up.

Nil nove sub sole. The first thing you should always remember: the requirements of GDPR are not that new. GDPR is based on existing legislation and security-

frameworks like ISO27k. This means there is a treasure-chest of knowledge, templates, procedures and other security tools available. There is no use to reinvent

the hot water.

Common sense is the super power. If you decrypt the legal language, a lot of the requirements are plain common sense and in my humble opinion this is the most

important security product you need to comply. Security and privacy by design for instance should be engrained in every project in your organisation.

Technology is your friend. Although one technology or a box can not solve all your GDPR worries, there is a lot of technology and next generation solutions that can

help you to make complying to GDPR a lot easier. For example: Rolling out encryption in the right way, just like there are a lot of tools to add Artificial

Intelligence and machine learning as an extra security layer.

Nell Watson, Associate faculty AI & Robotics @ Singularity University

The Transparency–Privacy paradox in a machine-intelligence-driven worldMachine Intelligence requires lots of data for training upon, often of a personal nature. Without access to this, the most potentially helpful functions of machine intelligence cannot

function. Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly asking why an algorithm made a certain prediction or

recommendation, and are empowered by the legislature to demand answers.

All of these forces are clashing head-to-head, and the outcome is uncertain. This talk will help you prepare for

this strange moment in history that is ripe with opportunity.

About Nell Watson

Nell Watson is an engineer, entrepreneur, and futurist thinker who grew up in Northern Ireland. She has a longstanding interest in the philosophy of technology, and how extensions of human capacity drive emerging social trends. Nell lectures globally on Machine Intelligence, AI philosophy, Human-Machine relations, and the Future of Human Society, serving as Associate Faculty at Singularity University and a member of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. She has had an unusual career, including teaching post-grad Computer Science at the age of 24, and later co-founding a successful Graffiti arts company. Her ability to bridge the world of technology and the Humanities makes it easy for her to translate complex subjects so that they can be clearly understood.
