Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Feb 16: Shiksha Niketan Sr. Secondary School, Jeevan Nagar organized a Farewell Party for outgoing students in its premises, here. lt was an enthusiastic func- tion not only to bid valediction but also to boost the outgoing students to be the meritorious as usual. The chief guest of the func- tion was the Principal of the school, Rameshwar Mengi and other dignitaries present on the occasion were from R.M. College, R.M. School and SNS Gandhi Nagar. The students of 10th class who were invited as guests were colorfully dressed. The programme com- menced with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest along with other guests. Then there was a bouquet presentation to the chief guest and sapling presentation to other guests. The programme was pro- ceeded by the Vandana Presentation by the students of 9th class. lt was very mar- velously performed filling the atmosphere with the religions thoughts. PK Dhar, Principal RM College and Kiran of SNS Gandhi Nagar addressed the students on the occasion. A skit staged by the stu- dents of 9th class based on the theme of "Avoiding discrimi- nation of the girls". Then a Western dance item was performed by the boys and Girls of 9th class in a thrilling way, which was followed by Bhangra, wherein both the boys and the girls danced in a very energetic way. They rocked on the stage. Finally, Rameshwar Mengi blessed the students. He encouraged them by giving the examples of the previous meri- torious students. Excelsior Correspondent RAJOURI, Feb 16: Socio Service Art Socio Group, Delhi conducted a 15 days Innovative Art Workshop/programme with the border children and youth attending Army Good Will Public School in Rajouri . In the programme about 100 children and youth hailing from different parts of state participated. The programme concluded here today. During the programme men- tal exercises, group analytical drama, visual art, Music, Creative writing, Mask Making, Clay moulding and Cultural History activities were incorpo- rated which improved the imag- inative skills and proved helpful in building confidence among the participants. On the concluding function the participants performed 2 short plays, musical items paintings, masks and clay mod- els were also exhibited on the concluding function. Shabir Ahmad Bhat, D.C Rajouri, was chief guest on this occasion. He lauded the per- formances done by the partici- pants and also lauded the efforts of Socio Service Art Group for holding these programmes in border areas and other areas in J&K continuously for the last 16 years. He also distributed awards and certificates among the participants at the end of the programme. Col. Ranjan Prabhu was also present on this func- tion. He appreciated the per- formances done by participants on concluding day. In the final competition long jump, shot put 200m race, kabad- di and kho-kho events were organized at sports stadium Kathua where in girl of block Barnoti, Marheen, Hiranagar, Basholi and Billawar participat- ed under the supervision of District Youth Services and Sports Officer (DYSSO) Sunil Kumar. Amir's battle with fate inspires his peers Excelsior Sports Correspondent BIJBEHARA, Feb 16: The captain of Jammu and Kashmir's disabled cricket team who lost both his arms to a tragic acci- dent in his childhood and holds his bat innovatively between neck and shoulder, is aiming to make his entry into national team. Amir Hussain, 36, of a remote Waghama village, in South Kashmir, was studying in 2nd Standard, when he lost his both arms to the blade of a machine at his father's bat man- ufacturing factory in 1997. Most of his flesh was taken apart from his shoulders and arms by the machine. With Sachin Tendulkar as his role model, Amir's unique way of holding his bat is catching attention of everybody who sees him playing. Besides, he bowls leg breaks by holding the cricket ball in his toe and finger. Not letting his disability to hinder his dream of becoming a cricketer, Amir Hussain, did hold his nerves and worked with enthusiasm to train himself as a cricketer. With the aim to play cricket, he started writing, eating food, bathing and other daily activities too with his foot. Amir's story is full of strug- gle for existence and fight against society that looks down upon the disabled and instead of encouraging discourages them. He is courage personified as despite all odds, he never gave up and is today a role model for many disabled in Kashmir. Rameez Raja, Amir's brother, wrapped him in a tarpaulin and took him on his shoulder and cried for help. "I knocked every door on way but everyone was scared to see the blood. No one helped me. A woman went to a nearby army camp and got an ambulance and we took him to Srinagar for treatment", he said. Amir was operated upon in Bone and Joints hospital, Srinagar where his arms were cut. He spent next three years in various hospitals before returning home. "When I was brought home, neighbours suggested my par- ents to eliminate me", said Amir. However, Amir's parents made it a point that their son makes a mark in his life. "I had to sell major portion of my agri- culture land and sawmill to make sure that my son is treated well. I even took loan from bank", said Bashir Ahmad Lone, Amir's father. "We wanted to divert his mind from the tragedy and sent him to school," said Raja, his brother. "At school, the kids would taunt him and the irony was teachers were reluctant to teach him. They would often advice him not to waste time and sit at home. But Amir's stoic nature and dedication helped him to stay there and learn", he said. "When teachers suggested me to leave the school, I did, but my grandmother encouraged me and sent me school again", said Amir. As his quest for knowledge increased, Amir looked for an innovative ways to pursue it. He trained himself to write with his foot. "Initially I found it very hard to write with the foot but I had no other option. I wanted to prove myself," Amir said. Amir became his own mas- ter. He would struggle a lot in doing routine work like going to toilet, combing his hair, putting up his clothes. But he refused any help from friends or family members. "It took me two years to learn all things myself. Now I do thing easily without anyone's help," Amir says proudly. Despite difficulties, Amir passed his class 10th and 12th examination. He took every dif- ficulty he faced in life as chal- lenge. He learnt swimming from ducks. He took inspiration from Sachin Tendulkar to become cricketer and from M F Hussain to become a painter. Amir's talent caught the eyes of experts when he joined the Degree College Bijbehara and there he stunned everyone with his precision. "Everyone was stunned to see me playing crick- et in college. Within few minutes everyone was applauding me and I became an icon in Degree College Bijbehara," Amir said. But his life as cricketer changed once his talent was spotted by one of the faculty members in the College who later helped him to join J&K National Para team. Looking at his extraordinary performance, he wasn't only selected in the National Para-cricket team of J&K, but also appointed its Captain. In Delhi, Amir impressed every one. "We won a lost match against Delhi when batting at 10, he stood like a rock", said Zahoor Ahmad, one of his team- mates. Amir's battle with fateinspires his peers

BIJBEHARA, Feb 16: Thecaptain of Jammu and Kashmir'sdisabled cricket team who lostboth his arms to a tragic acci-dent in his childhood and holdshis bat innovatively betweenneck and shoulder, is aiming tomake his entry into nationalteam.

Amir Hussain, 36, of aremote Waghama village, inSouth Kashmir, was studying in2nd Standard, when he lost hisboth arms to the blade of amachine at his father's bat man-ufacturing factory in 1997. Mostof his flesh was taken apart fromhis shoulders and arms by themachine.

With Sachin Tendulkar as hisrole model, Amir's unique wayof holding his bat is catchingattention of everybody who seeshim playing. Besides, he bowlsleg breaks by holding the cricketball in his toe and finger.

Not letting his disability tohinder his dream of becoming acricketer, Amir Hussain, didhold his nerves and worked withenthusiasm to train himself as acricketer. With the aim to playcricket, he started writing, eatingfood, bathing and other dailyactivities too with his foot.

Amir's story is full of strug-gle for existence and fightagainst society that looks downupon the disabled and instead ofencouraging discourages them.He is courage personified asdespite all odds, he never gaveup and is today a role model formany disabled in Kashmir.

Rameez Raja, Amir's brother,wrapped him in a tarpaulin andtook him on his shoulder andcried for help. "I knocked everydoor on way but everyone wasscared to see the blood. No onehelped me. A woman went to anearby army camp and got anambulance and we took him toSrinagar for treatment", he said.Amir was operated upon in Boneand Joints hospital, Srinagarwhere his arms were cut. Hespent next three years in varioushospitals before returning home."When I was brought home,neighbours suggested my par-ents to eliminate me", said Amir.

However, Amir's parentsmade it a point that their sonmakes a mark in his life. "I hadto sell major portion of my agri-culture land and sawmill to makesure that my son is treated well. Ieven took loan from bank", saidBashir Ahmad Lone, Amir'sfather.

"We wanted to divert hismind from the tragedy and sent

him to school," said Raja, hisbrother. "At school, the kidswould taunt him and the ironywas teachers were reluctant toteach him. They would oftenadvice him not to waste time andsit at home. But Amir's stoicnature and dedication helpedhim to stay there and learn", hesaid.

"When teachers suggestedme to leave the school, I did, butmy grandmother encouraged meand sent me school again", saidAmir.

As his quest for knowledgeincreased, Amir looked for aninnovative ways to pursue it. Hetrained himself to write with hisfoot. "Initially I found it veryhard to write with the foot but Ihad no other option. I wanted toprove myself," Amir said.

Amir became his own mas-ter. He would struggle a lot indoing routine work like going totoilet, combing his hair, puttingup his clothes. But he refusedany help from friends or familymembers. "It took me two yearsto learn all things myself. Now Ido thing easily without anyone'shelp," Amir says proudly.

Despite difficulties, Amirpassed his class 10th and 12thexamination. He took every dif-ficulty he faced in life as chal-lenge. He learnt swimming fromducks. He took inspiration fromSachin Tendulkar to becomecricketer and from M F Hussainto become a painter.

Amir's talent caught the eyesof experts when he joined theDegree College Bijbehara andthere he stunned everyone withhis precision. "Everyone wasstunned to see me playing crick-et in college. Within few minuteseveryone was applauding meand I became an icon in DegreeCollege Bijbehara," Amir said.

But his life as cricketerchanged once his talent wasspotted by one of the facultymembers in the College wholater helped him to join J&KNational Para team. Looking athis extraordinary performance,he wasn't only selected in theNational Para-cricket team ofJ&K, but also appointed itsCaptain.

In Delhi, Amir impressedevery one. "We won a lost matchagainst Delhi when batting at 10,he stood like a rock", saidZahoor Ahmad, one of his team-mates.

India's regional supremacywent unchallenged as the hostswere crowned overall champi-ons for the 12th consecutivetime after notching up a record-breaking haul of 308 medals,dominating the final day ofcompetitions as well in theSouth Asian Games here today.

With women boxers scoop-ing all the three gold medals onoffer and the judokas also bag-ging two gold and two silver onthe last day of the Games,India's final tally came to 188gold, 99 silver and 30 bronzemedals.

It was a massive jump inmedal count for the Indians,who had won 175, including 90gold, in the previous edition ofthe Games in 2010.

The ace all-rounder thanked Sunrisers Hyderabad for theirsupport and said that he did not get much opportunity in thescheme of things in Hyderabad team for last two IPL seasons,adding that it was the right time to be part of RCB.
