ACTIVITIES IN THE HOME – ways to help children improve their academic skills: READING Be confident that your child will learn to read and show them that you enjoy reading by having lots of different types of reading material around the home. Children value watching family members read and write each day. If English is not your first language, read in your home language. To encourage children to read, you can share such activities as:

Reading signs Checking television guides Using a recipe Reading the newspaper aloud Playing games including crosswords Reading instructions Reading magazines, comics and poems Reading labels on groceries when you go shopping

Listening to children read each day is a good idea but remember reading is for fun. You can read a book, look at the cover and talk about what the book is about, ask questions about what has happened so far in the story and take turns when reading a harder book. Remember the three ‘Ps’ for new words – pause, prompt and praise. Allow children to work out the word (pause), use clues from the context (prompt) and praise your child for trying. If necessary, it is alright to tell your child the word. (from P&C Journal [The Journal of the federation of Parents and Citizens’ Association of NSW], P. 12, Term 1, 2008)

Names On Property Please remember to put your child’s name on all items of clothing that get taken on and off during the day (eg: hats, jackets and jumpers). Without a name it is impossible to return lost property to its owner. Thank you. Mark Warnock and Karen Sinclair

CURRICULUM

REMINDER

OUR VALUES: Fair Go and Cooperation - We work together for the common good, where all people are treated fairly.

WINTER ILLNESSES AND CHICKEN POX In order to reduce the spread of illness through the school community, if your child contracts a contagious illness we request that parents inform the school as soon as possible and keep the child at home until their doctor clears their return to school. We have a child attending the school who is immune suppressed. Immune suppressed people contract illnesses from others more easily, and their illnesses can be more severe and longer in duration. Chicken Pox is particularly dangerous for this child. Please inform the school office immediately if your child is diagnosed with chicken pox or has had close contact with another child who has chicken pox. The office will then inform the parents of the immune supressed child, and medical advice can then be sought for this child. If you suspect your child may have developed chicken pox it would be most appreciated if you could keep them home from school and see a doctor to confirm whether they have chicken pox or not.

P&C NEWS

19 JUNE P&C MEETING WILL TALK ABOUT…SUSTAINABILITY! The focus item for the upcoming P&C meeting on Tuesday 19 June at 7.30pm is SUSTAINABILITY. We are very fortunate to have Kate Low (Head Teacher of Applied Environmental Management at TAFE) to come along and lead the discussion. Kate is a parent from Erskineville Public School and was instrumental in implementing the school’s outstanding sustainability programs. School environmental management plans work across the key learning areas of the curriculum and the whole school community. The P&C is committed to helping the school further develop its sustainability programs, so come along and share your ideas and learn more about what SHPS is already doing.

If you are not yet a member of the P&C, it isn’t too late to join! Come along with a gold coin donation and sign up. Being part of the P&C is a great way to meet new people and to get involved in fundraising activities for our fantastic school. If you have any questions or comments, please email the P&C at: [email protected]

THERE IS STILL TIME TO NOMINATE ALL THE INSPRATIONAL TEACHERS AT SHPS!

There is still time to nominate any or all of the teachers at SHPS for the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA). This is our chance to give a shout out to our great teachers.

Nominated teachers receive a congratulatory NEiTA Certificate of Nomination and become eligible for NEiTA State and National Awards. It’s easy to nominate. Forms can be downloaded or completed online at www.neita.com.au or requested from NEiTA by phoning free call 1800 624 487. The closing date for nominations is 31 July. Let’s show the teachers at our school how much we appreciate and support them!

GARDENING BEE GETS RAINED OUT! Saturday’s prolific downpour was great for the garden, but not so good for our dedicated bees! The Gardening Bee ended before it even began, as the rain just didn’t stop. Despite these bleak conditions, a handful of enthusiastic parents and carers still braved the miserable conditions! Our thanks to Bruce, Greg, Richard and Erik for leaving their dry, warm homes to stand in cold, wet garden beds, and also to Gina for purchasing the plants and materials. We were able to assess the garden and thanks to previous Gardening Bees, everything looks in good shape. So, we will cancel this term’s Bee and hope for better weather in Term 3. See you all in the garden next term! The Garden Committee

PLEASE SUPPORT THESE YEAR 3 BOYS BY SPONSORING THEM IN THE NSW CANCER COUNCIL’S CITY MILE DASH ON FRIDAY JUNE 15TH.

SUMMER HILL IS A RESTORATIVE SCHOOL

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

Last Wednesday saw the Zone Cross Country held at Majors Bay Reserve. Our girls finished in 3rd place whilst the boys finished in 9th place. Overall, Summer Hill finished in 4th place. Congratulations to all the children who participated. Pictured are the four students who progressed to the Regional Championships to be held next week.

They are Lilli, Tom and Ella who will compete at The Sydney East Championships next week. Good luck to these three. Also pictured is Francesca who is first reserve for the Championships.

CONGRATULATIONS ANGELINA AND LILLI

“Junior Sports Star Angelina T, a promising tennis player, is a pupil at Summer Hill Public School”, Craig Wilson from the Inner West Courier wrote recently.

HELP NEEDED TO WIN A GRAND PIANO FOR THE SCHOOL

Donna Ross is preparing an entry to win a grand piano for the school from ABC Radio. The application

will be a short written piece and it will be accompanied by a video. The voice of our parents and children is needed. We desperately want one because:

A grand piano will be much louder among our bands and orchestras. A grand piano will help our top class pianist students to improve.

Parents and students are needed to speak on camera briefly about the importance of the music program in the school and why we might benefit from having a grand piano.

We will be filming from 8.00am on June 13 in the hall. Contact Donna if you can contribute your comments on camera at 8.00am on Wednesday June 13 at the hall.

If you cannot make it at that time and you wish to contribute, email what you would like to say and we can include it in the submission.

Please let Donna know if you or your child is available to add their voice to our application. Email Donna at: [email protected]

NSW PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE

Last Thursday, 31 May, St Peters PS (St Peter Blues) visited Summer Hill PS for a debate against our team (Frances, Kelly, Sofia & Lachlan). We argued against the topic: “That parents should ban their children from social networking sites.” It was a close debate, but unfortunately in the end we lost. We are looking forward to our next debate - this Wednesday 6 June at Stanmore Public School.

SPORT NEWS

JUNIOR A NETBALL At the start of the game we were going quite well because we were winning 3-0. In the second half we were a bit more tired than we were at the start of the game. However, most of us were concentrating better. We all showed great teamwork and perseverance but Kathleen, Lizzy and Selena were the stand out players this week. In the end we won 8-0 which was great.

JUNIOR B NETBALL The Junior B Netball Team won 4-2. The whole team played really well. Olivia and Justine were great Centres, Era and Frances did very well as Wing Attacks, Tara was a fabulous shooter, Eliza was an excellent Goal Attack, Alexia was a very good Goal Keeper, Katya and Joanna played great Wing Defences and Emilie did fantastic as Goal Defence. Hopefully we will keep our good luck up.

Era (Team Member) SENIOR A NETBALL On Friday 1st June, the Senior A Netball Team won 24-1 against Homebush West. I was very impressed with how my team played especially because the other team was rough. The star players this week were Holly G (WD), Catherine M-D (GD) and Gabi D (GS and GA).

SENIOR B NETBALL The Senior B Netball Team had a draw 8-8 against Homebush West last Friday. I was extremely impressed with all of the players because they worked really well together. Next week I hope that we have another team victory!!!

Nina (Team Captain) JUNIOR SOCCER Summer Hill vs Concord Summer Hill won the toss and chose the direction. Both teams started off well. Concord nearly got through but were no match for our defence . We scored a few quick goals to make the score 2-0 our way. In the second half, Concord's defence and attack got better which we adapted to well. We scored again to make Concord lose their confidence. The final score was 4-0 and the well deserved man of the match was Morgan for passing and looking to be passed to. The people who scored were Owen W and Lochlan S who scored two each. We had a good game this week and let's hope we win next week!

THREE-WAY ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES AND CONFERENCES

Three way assessment provides a forum for teachers, students and parents to acknowledge student progress and achievement. In three way conferences students typically explain their learning achievements, as well as areas for further improvement. This may include displays of student work. Three way assessment strategies and conferences have benefits for teachers, parents and schools. Some of these benefits are outlined in the table below.

HOW MIGHT 3 WAY CONFERENCES WORK IN PRACTICE?

In 3 way conferences, students, parents and teachers have specific roles and responsibilities.

STUDENTS: Students are required to plan and prepare for the conference. During the conference they should attempt to demonstrate their understanding of the topics that they have completed through discussing and answering questions that may be posed. This enables students to share their work and/or ideas in a confident and articulate manner.

PARENTS: Parents are expected to attend the conference and value the student’s contribution. Parents can offer support and encouragement to students and ultimately, through discussion at the end of the conference, help set achievable learning goals for the child for the remainder of the year.

TEACHERS: Teachers help students develop the confidence to share their knowledge of themselves as learners. Teachers will also assist with other information for parents regarding their child’s learning.

learning Empowers students as they work toward and achieve syllabus outcomes

International Day of the African Child – 16 June Formerly known as Soweto Day and South African Youth Day, this day commemorates 16 June, 1976, when some 30,000 high school students began a march to protest against racism in the South African government and the inferior quality education system for black students. One of the student demands was that they were taught in their own language. This day commemorates all those youth who were fatally shot or wounded in the fight to abolish apartheid in South Africa.
