Tingha needs to voteTingha residents are being

urged to vote in the upcom-ing Armidale Regional Coun-cil (ARC) Election.

Former Guyra Shire Coun-cillor and Tingha residentAudrey McArdle said thatthere are many in the com-munity who are not awarethat they remain part ofARC, or have indicated thatthey have no interest in vot-ing.

Mrs McArdle said thatmany believe that their voteis not important, and thattheir future lies with In-verell.

However the shift in theShire boundaries is notlikely to occur in the near fu-ture and may be delayeduntil at least July of 2018.

“This is a terrible time forTingha,” Mrs McArdle said.

“We didn’t get any of themoney that was thrownaround after the amalgama-tion, we couldn’t vote in theInverell poll, we are still inlimbo and now we have beentold that it may not be untilJuly of next year before any-thing changes.”

“A lot of people are sayingthat they will just get their

names crossed off. Theydon’t see why they have tovote for a council that is notreally theirs.”

Former Guyra ShireDeputy Mayor and candidatefor ARC Simon Murray saidthere is no certainty aroundthe boundary change, and heis also concerned that peoplesimply are not aware thatthey have to vote.

“There are a lot of people

in Tingha who don’treally know what isgoing on,” he said.

“One of the rea-sons I am standing is be-cause I want to give a voiceto the whole of the councilarea and that includesTingha.”

“We were told last week byGreens MLC David Shoe-bridge that any more muck-ing around with local

government boundaries isextremely unlikely given thecurrent political climate, soTingha may be stuck with usfor a while.

“I urge them to not wastetheir votes, to think carefullyand to use their vote wisely.’

Main street upgrade delayed

Kolora residents havehad the pleasure of watch-ing artist Kay Smith painta canvas of ‘Fresh WaterLagoon”, which representsKolora’s name.

Kay then presented thepainting to the residents asa keep sake.

Kay is volunteering hertime by delivering artclasses to the residents,which is beneficial to theirmemory, coordination andself expression.

Work on the $2.77million upgrade of theGuyra CBD has been delayed and will nowbegin in the new year.

Initially construction on the main streetwas expected to commence in October 2017,however the design of the NBN network andEssential Energy's underground electricitydesign is unlikely to be complete in time.Construction is now likely to commence inearly 2018.

In a report to the July meeting of ArmidaleRegional Council Director of EngineeringRalf Stoeckeler, said that the design of theproject is proceeding well.

Road, drainage and footpath design isbeing conducted in house by Council's designsection, while underground electricity andstreet lighting is being done by Essential En-ergy and National Broadband Network by

Telstra.In addition, the advice of a colour consult-

ant will be sought to design a colour schemefor shop owners who will be encouraged to re-paint their facades by Council providing thepaint at no cost.

It is also proposed to engage an artist toproduce a coloured three dimensional draw-ing of the proposed streetscape which will beused when consulting with the community.

An area has been identified at the cornerof Bradley and Moore Street which would besuitable for incorporating some form of streetart.

The next steps will be to complete the pre-liminary plans, engage with the community,incorporate any suggestions that are consid-ered positive, finalise the plans, then con-struct.

Learning leadershi p at Lake KeepitStudents from year 7, 9 and

10 from Guyra Central Schoolwho were elected to the Stu-dent Representative Council,along with Mr Scott Miller,have attended the SecondaryFuture Leaders Camp thatwas held at the Sport andRecreation Centre, LakeKeepit.

The Future Leaders Pro-gram provides students withthe chance to learn and de-velop leadership skills.

Drawing on Department ofEducation and Communities(DEC) approved strategies, theprogram allows students todiscover the difference be-tween popularity and leader-ship in an engaging,motivating and enjoyable envi-ronment.

Day one of the camp allowedstudents to work with repre-sentatives from Moree Second-ary College to complete arange of practical activitiesthat involved using teamworkand communication skills, fol-lowed by activities and lecturesabout leadership.

The second day, started offwith lectures then followed onwith a practical activity thatwas based on the lecture con-

tent.The students constructed a

stretcher to transport theirpeers safely across a certaindistance. This activity onceagain tested their communica-tion, ability to work as a team,being able to trust new people

and using 100% of theirstrength.

After lunch, they took part ina Commando course whichtested a range of skills. Thiswas the one activity that MrMiller enjoyed the most as hehad strategically placed him-self at the end of the mudcrawl to enable him to dunkthe student's heads into themud.

On the final night, bothschool groups got together andhad a campfire on the lake, en-joying some homemadedamper that they cooked indi-vidually on the campfire,singing and dancing.

One of the main purposes of

the camp was for students tocreate a School Action Plan(SAP) that addresses a keyschool or community issue thatis identified by the studentsprior to arrival at the camp.

The SAP encouraged thestudents to pursue an issuerelevant to their own school orcommunity’s needs and will beplaying a valuable role in theschool decision-makingprocess.

The students identified someinitiatives to bring back toother school leaders for discus-sion and to hopefully enforceinto Guyra Central School.

This resulted in a dearer trendfor all classes. Trade, heavy andextra heavy lambs were well rep‐resented.

Biosecurity and pests under the spotlight

Trees on small farmsPositive activities on even

a handful of acres can makea big difference to the envi-ronment, and trees in partic-ular provide many benefits,no matter how big or smallthe property.

Northern Tablelands LocalLand Services and Landcarenetworks around the regionhave teamed up to work withlandholders on smallerblocks to make native reveg-etation projects more accessi-ble.

Building on the NorthernTablelands ‘Trees on Farms’program, the project is fo-cused on enabling and grow-ing a community of ‘small’landholders on lifestyleblocks, hobby farms andproperties skirting our townswithin the region, to imple-ment revegetation works.

Research shows landhold-ers with majority off-farm in-come and activity onproperties from 10-200hectares have a strong inter-est in the environment andconnection to Landcare

groups, but sometimes lackthe infrastructure, equip-ment and specific knowledgeto participate in nativerevegetation projects.

Northern Tablelands LocalLand Services Officer IvanLackay said the partnershipwith Landcare was to helpperi-urban landholders onsmaller acreages, lifestyleblocks and hobby farms, toreintroduce native trees ontheir land.

Providing native faunawith both habitat and safetravel routes is another ben-efit trees offer on peri-urbanproperties where develop-ment has disturbed wildlifecorridors.

Species with local prove-nance will be identified forproperties where planting isto occur and seeds, wherepossible, accessed throughthe Northern TablelandsLocal Land Services seed-bank which contains speciesendemic to the region.

Membership with yourlocal Landcare group is notnecessary to participate inthe program but involvementwith like-minded people andparticipation in group activi-ties could be one benefit ofgetting involved.

It was all tinsel and fun atGuyra on Wednesday 26thJuly with residents and fam-ilies from Guyra Multi-Pur-pose Service celebratingChristmas in July. Althoughthere was no white wintersnow present for this celebra-tion, fun was still had by allwho attended.

Due to it being the middleof the year and his schedulenot too busy yet, Santa evenshowed up shaking his belland with freshly baked gin-gerbread men.

All the residents enjoyedthis surprise along with fam-ily members who were in-vited to join in thecelebration.

“It was very good, reallygood actually, great job doneand even Santa showed up,everyone had a great time,”Mr Martin McCosker said.

“It was a brilliant day,great to have a visit fromSanta and the food wasgreat,” Mrs Betty Wilsonagreed.

Guyra Home Support Services held afarewell morning tea last week for volun-teers Barb and Ray Hickman. Barb and Rayhave been volunteering with the service forthe past eight years since moving to Guyra.

Home Support Services Co-Ordinator SallyBurey said that the Hickman’s have sup-ported Home Support services in a variety ofways.

“Both Barb and Ray volunteered as trans-port drivers for clients to medical appoint-ments in the Home Support ServicesVehicle,” Sally said. “Barb also volunteeredweekly at “Nicholii House”, our Wednesdaygroup day, and Ray was the regular driverfor the Wednesday group and for many of theclient outings or day trips.”

“They also socially supported clients inGuyra who had little family support, andwere always willing to lend a hand wherethey could.”

“Barb and Ray have been an integral partof the service for many years and we wishthem well as they make the move away andhope they enjoy their sea change.”

In preparation for the Premier’s SpellingBee, students have been practising their listwords and learning to be confident in theirspelling abilities.

On Wednesday 2nd August, we put theirspelling to the test in our Primary SpellingBee.

Almost all students from Early Stage 1 toStage 3 participated in the event, showingtheir great dedication to learning and to rep-resenting Guyra Central School. Studentsdisplayed confidence and good sportsman-ship during the spelling bee. At all timesthroughout the competition students (com-peting and audience members) showed ourcore values of; Pride, Respect and Responsi-bility. For many of us, wherewe find ourselves on anygiven day may not resem-ble where we thought wewould be when we startedout on our journey.

When Jeff Pow pur-chased SouthamptonHomestead in 2006, hestarted with a Bed andBreakfast and a weekendgetaway. Today he and hiswife Michelle run WesternAustralia’s only verticallyintegrated pastured poul-try business.

“The business has grownthrough boldness, re-silience and hope,” saysJeff.

After starting full- timefarming in 2011, using re-generative farming princi-ples and practices, theSouthampton Farm is anamazing multi enterprisefarming business based onperennial pastures. Allthis was recovered from apine plantation which hadbeen cleared before Jeffbought the property.

In 2013 a massive bushfire tore through theBlackwood valley devas-tating the farm, destroy-ing the historic homesteadthat was the centre ofSouthampton. Sheds,fences, water and infras-tructure were rebuilt, andthe pastures were re-seeded and now Jeff andMichelle’s business contin-ues to grow.

But Jeff ’s passion ex-tends beyond his life time.He recently began work tobuild a vision forSouthampton that willlast 500 years. Regenera-tive agriculture is aboutlongevity of our food sys-tems, and Jeff is looking at

a long timeframe to en-sure the efforts that aregoing into the farm nowwill continue well into thefuture.

This amazing journeyled Jeff to present atTEDx at the University ofWestern Australia, wherehe shared his vision forthe farm for 500 years.

Jeff went on to win the2016 Australian Govern-ment Innovation in Sus-tainable Farm PracticesAward and 2016 NationalLandcare ‘People’s Choice’Award at the NationalLandcare Conference lastyear.

League held a successfulfundraiser on July 29th,which will boost the club’sbank balance by close to$4,000.

The club wishes to thankall the businesses who sup-ported them with donationsof items. Thanks also toTerry Williams who con-ducted the auction on behalfof the club.

The Penrith special editionjumper was sold for $250 andthe Titans package made$750 .

All money raised will goback into buying equipmentfor the club and its players.

As well as a successfulfundraiser the club has alsotasted success on the field.Over the last two weekendsthey have made of clean

sweep (barring one drawngame) against Tingha andWarialda.

The under 12s defeatedTingha 34-0 and Warialda56-10. The under 10s de-

feated Tingha 56-0 andbacked up for a draw againstWarialda after some of teamwere down with the flu.

Games for the under 8swere closer, winning 32-12

against Tingha and 36-24against Warialda, while thegirls league tag side defeatedTingha 4-0 and Warialda 22-14.

As the season draws to aclose Guyra is preparing tohost the semifinals whichwill take place on August 19where they will be repre-sented in all finals.

Also featuring in the finalsaction will be Glen Innes’Guyra contingent Jack Lock-yer, Isaiah King and DylanSutton in the under 16s andHarry Lockyer and MylesWilliams in the 14s.

This week they travel toMoree with the 8s LeagueTag taking the field at 10am,10s at 10.50 and 12s at 11.40.

Guyra Cricket President’s reportFive teams represented

our club in the Armidale jun-ior and senior cricket compe-titions last year. Several newplayers last season helpedbolster the senior teams dur-ing the 2016-17 cricket sea-son. This helped both thirdand second grade be verycompetitive.

Several outstanding per-formances were recordedthroughout the season.Shane Wolfenden 197, BJKliendienst’s 7 for 11 and PatKeen’s 70 odd in the semi-final to mention just a few.

Unfortunately third gradelost their semi-final andwhile second grade wontheirs, the final was a com-plete washout.

The jewel in the crownwere the under 16s that,even though their final waswashed out, won the pre-miership. Several of theseyoung men played for thetwo senior teams as well andthey represent the future of

the club. With our new cura-tor doing such a good job onthe turf wicket, cricket inGuyra can only progress.

This year the club pur-chased training shirts for thesenior players and the jun-iors received shirts as tro-phies. Both the junior andsenior presentations werewell run and well attended.At the Armidale presenta-tions Shane Wolfenden andBJ Kliendienst received tro-phies.

Through Guyra SportsCouncil we have been givena new turf mower andthrough the Armidale Re-gional Sports Council we aregetting new sight screens forthe Recreation Ground.These we have been told willbe ready for the new season.They are being made by alocal firm Guyra WeldingWorks.

Our junior players receivedcricket caps from RegionalAustralia Bank and the sen-

iors got caps thanks to De-Jays takeaway. We appreci-ate their support of our club.

The Guyra Caspers firstgrade soccer team have hitback with a bang after lastweek’s loss. They put intheir best performance sofar this season beating ahot North Armidale teamon Saturday afternoon.

The first half of the gamewas a tight tussle with

both teams having oppor-tunities to strike, neitherteam converting leavingthe score nil all at halftime.

The half time talk waspositive with the Capersknowing they couldn’t letthe intensity drop. Withthis positive attitude they

put on a dominant secondhalf landing three in theback of the net. Goals thisweek were scored by JakeEllis 2 and Matt Simpson1.

The Caspers will have tobe at their best again thisweekend as they take onGlen Innes at home. It will

be an exciting game withGlen being the form teamof the competition.

Come down on Saturdayafternoon and support theyoung Casper’s team. Sec-ond grade kick off at 1pmand first grade at 3pm.

Three of the Locals have now passed the 200 barrier, with PHJbeing joined in the top spot by Mailman on 204. It must havebeen the birthday celebrations that assisted with the tipping.

In second place is Men’s Shed, on 202, who had one of thebest scores of the week, followed by Young Darcey in third po-sition on 198. The anguish is palpable, way back in fourth placeon 198 (eight points behind the leaders, just to rub it in a bit)you will find our friend, The Ref. He is accompanied by John.

Men’s golfSunday saw a quality field of 14 contest the C T Electrics

trophy and the August monthly mug. The winner was BruceCoppock and the runner up was Warren McCowen. Nearestto the pin on the 7th was Tim Ellis and best 2nd shot on the8th went to Bruce Coppock.

Next Sunday will be an 18 hole stableford for a club trophyas well as the NEDGA mixed open in Armidale.

Other upcoming events will be the Westpac Helicopter 3person ambrose on the 20th August and Presentation Nighton the 26th August.

Women’s Golf Last Wednesday six of our golfers enjoyed their golf at

Delungra Open Day attended by 42 players from the NewEngland and North West. Two Glen Innes ladies, Elaine Wil-son and Julie Dunn, won the 4BBB event with 49 Stablefordpoints. Runners up to the scratch event with 22 points werePip White and Wendy Jackson. Wendy Jackson won thelongest drive in Division 2 while Wendy George was pleasedto win a prize in the raffle.

The Graham Betts final was held at Armidale Golf Courseon Sunday when 35 players hit off. Overall winner was KayNash (Armidale) with 36 Stableford points. Lou Robertson(Armidale) was 2nd with 35 points while Cheryl MacDonald(Walcha) was 3rd with 31 points. Pip White, Wendy Georgeand Wendy Jackson played some good golf. Wendy Jacksoncame 4th with 27 points on a count back from Pip.

We will get twice the practise on the front nine again thisWednesday as it is unlikely the back nine will be open fol-lowing 17 millimetres of rain last Thursday evening. Hopethe weather is as pleasant as last Wednesday.

The Guyra No.3 Pennantplayers travelled to Maitlandon Thursday August 3rd andalthough they did not comehome with a State PennantFlag the players did theGuyra Bowling Club proud.

Their approach to the taskahead of them was only tooobvious but they tackled thattask head on and showedtheir fighting abilities. Eventhough they came up short

they never gave up.I don’t have possession of

the score cards but I can saythat Guyra was beaten by allthree opponents but not dis-graced. After exceeding theirexpectations in the NewEngland Bowling Associationand in the Zone 3 playoffs,they did exceptionally well tobe at the State playoffs

Now before I get on withthis weekend’s fixtures I

have a couple of thankyousto make. Firstly a thank youto Robert Walls from all theplayers for taking on thedriving task and doing asterling job, also to CameronPeardon for being our man-ager along with his offsiderJohn Hamel and last but notleast the thirteen players.
