RESI NEWS Issue 1 Resi News T2 WOLVES President’s Report Dear residents I would like to keep you all up dated on Campus life 2014. The Wolves have a few upcoming events for you all to look forward to. These events are a free study breakfast for all residential students, this will be occurring at 10:30am on Wednesday June 4 th in the NRAS downstairs common room. The breakfast will be pancakes and juice which will all be supplied at no cost to you. What better way to get your brain thinking and ready to learn than with free pancakes. After the breakfast I know that you will all be bunkered down cramming in some last minute study before your exams, but remember it is just as important to take a break and relax give yourself time to breathe and think straight. A movie night will be held Saturday June 7 th from 7pm onwards on top movie rooms in the NRAS building. The movies are yet to be confirmed, there will be free popcorn, so relax after the busy week ok exams and bring your blankets, get comfy and enjoy the movies. Up next is Friday the 13 th Movie night, we will be having horror movies played in both cinema rooms, again there will be free popcorn and candy supplied at the movies.

Finally exams will be over but don’t rush off back home just yet there is a Games Night, featuring Pictionary, Charades and Messy Twister. Participants will be divided into teams on the night, there will be prizes to be won (penny skateboards, vouchers and much more) so come along and have some fun before you head back home to see friends and family over the break.

Trimester 2 fun will still continue with the Resident Kris Kringle occurring, if you have not signed up yet make sure you do, click the link or scan the QR code on the posters around. If you don’t sign up you will miss out on an amazing gift, however you can still participate in the games and get your photos with SANTA.

The Xmas in July will be happening on Saturday July 19th which is the first week back, make sure you have your gifts wrapped and into the office. We have a resi sport the first week back, make sure you dress in your house colours and give your team a chance to take out the title. After resi sport we have the famous

Resi Got Talent on Thursday July 17th, I will be opening the event with my attempt of Rafiki’s – Circle of Life so come along and have a laugh at me, I know I will be. Look out for the posters for the upcoming events, make sure you sign up for Kris Kringle and get your acts/talent ready I look forward to seeing you at all the upcoming events.

Health and Wellbeing News – Residences

Travel health Please ensure if you are travelling overseas during trimester break that you register on the Australian Governments Smart Traveller website. The site has up to the minute advice and information, you can also sign up to the Smart Traveller Facebook page and Twitter feeds. Travel insurance is vital so please ensure you are well covered and understand what your policy provides in case of emergencies.

One for the Women - The Body Image Movement The Body Image Movement aims to harness and facilitate positive body image activism by encouraging women to be more accepting of who they are, use positive language when referring to their bodies and others and to prioritise health before beauty. Love your bodies and love yourselves, the videos are really powerful.

Smoke Free Deakin - No Tobacco Week It has been really great to see so many students, smokers and non-smokers pledging their support for Smoke Free Deakin, the initiative has come a long way in one short trimester. Events are currently being held on all campuses in week 11, so come down and sign the pledge. We are also interested in hearing from students who wish to have QUIT sessions with the campus nurse or attend Hypnotherapy. Please email the health service on campus to [email protected] and include your name and mobile number and we will be in touch.

On that note...Noisy Neighbours?

Are your neighbours partying too loud and too late? Music keeping you awake? Can’t study, can’t sleep??! Don’t wait—call our onsite security!! There are noise curfews in place to ensure res is a peaceful and enjoyable place for all.

The noise curfew applies between:

11.00 pm and 9.00 am - Resi Noise Curphew

But unreasonable noise is unacceptable at any time of the day or night within res.

So if noise levels are too high around your unit and its effecting your study and sleep, please let the staff know. You don’t even have to leave your name, it can be COMPLETELY anonymous! call 1800 062 579 from a mobile

All noise during the curfew times need to be contained within the room from which it is being generated.

Avo c a d o / so u r c re a m , to se rve Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook onion for 2 minutes, or until soft. Add mince. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 5 minutes or until browned. 2. Add kidney beans, chilli powder, seasoning, tomato paste and water. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until thick. Stir through coriander. 3. Arrange corn chips on a heatproof plate. Top with mince. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 15 minutes, or until hot. Top with salsa, avocado and sour cream. Serve!

Where can I use eduroam? Eduroam allows users from participating institutions to gain secure access to wireless network access using their standard username (email format)/password credentials as they do at their home institution for wireless access

T2 2014 RESI STUDENT DINING PACKAGES

As Trimester 2 approaches we would now like to offer the opportunity to purchase dining packages for the new Trimester.

T2 meals will commence Monday, 14th July 2014 on the Burwood, Waurn Ponds & Warrnambool campuses.

As we have over Trimester 1, we will continue to ensure you eat healthy and delicious meals!

Again, the food choices will change nightly, with all menus changing monthly. We will serve all the healthy food groups using the freshest produce and offering a variety of local and international dishes: serving protein, vegetables, fruit, savoury, sweet and carbohydrates in recipes from all around the world, including Vegetarian, Halal and Coeliac.

Monday and Tuesday (2 meal package) *Students who previously purchased the Annual 3 dinner package can continue to collect their meals on a Wednesday evening.

The Dining package of your choice must be fully paid in advance by Friday, 11th July 2014.

The Deakin Card • The package is loaded on to your student Deakin Card in the form of ‘Meal Credits’. • You must swipe your Deakin Card every time at the venue each night when dining. • 1 swipe = 1 meal • You may swipe more than once and bring a guest (however please note, this will deduct an additional meal from your

allowance) • Warrnambool and Waurn Ponds students may use meal credits for breakfast or lunch packages available at The Market Hall

and Riverview Cafe • Any meal credits remaining on a Trimester 2 or Annual plan at the end of T2 can be converted to Dining Dollars on your

Deakin Card (equivalent to purchased value). No Dining Dollars will be loaded on until the end of Trimester. • No cash refunds under any circumstances or for unclaimed meals • You can view your meal credit balance at http://www.deakin.edu.au/campus-life/services-and-facilities/deakin-

• Meal packages are offered to on campus residents and to students living locally • A meal is 2 courses – Mains with sides and fruit, dessert and a drink • Meals are served on crockery with cutlery • Meals are not offered during semester breaks or on public holidays

Occasional theme nights and special events will be hosted throughout the year and will cost 1 meal credit (swipe) to attend.
