This is an initiative of the Victorian Indonesian Teachers Association, and is supported by Melbourne University and the Victorian Government. The students completed a 5 to 10 minute conversation with at two Indonesian teachers (Brian Williams, of Cathedral College and Meg Webster, of Galen Catholic College). In this conversation students were required to answer general questions about their age, where they live, hobbies, how they get to school etc. Aſterwards they gave a speech about their friends, family or their pets for approximately 1-2 minutes. Then they needed to answer a series of rehearsed and unrehearsed questions regarding the topics they had previously spoken about, for a further 2-3 minutes. It was evident that the students had practised frequently and the assessors were amazed by the students’ love of the language, their preparation, pronunciation, and ability to converse in Indonesian, making it very difficult to choose the finalists for each section. A total of twenty two students from Galen Catholic College, will now compete and represent the Wangaratta District in the Sayembara Lisan State Finals at the University of Melbourne on Saturday 23rd May. Our school community wishes them the best of luck! Dear Galen Parents/Guardians,

At Galen Catholic College we consider student attendance to be very important. In order to improve the communication link between parents and the school we will be implementing a new attendance notification system.

At present if your child is unable to attend school, parents or guardians are asked to contact the college either via phone or email to notify a parent approved student absence. Unfortunately this contact is not always made.

On Monday 18th May, Galen Catholic College will implement a new SMS system which will alert parents via a SMS if their child is absent from school without parent approval. The following message is a sample of the SMS which will be sent; “(Name of student) in (homeroom) is absent from school today (date). Please either call the office on (03)57216322 or email [email protected] or reply to this SMS. Thank you”

May I take this opportunity to ask all parents/guardians to please contact the administration office on (03) 5721 6322 or email [email protected] to notify the school of any student absence e.g. Illness, medical appointment, holiday etc.

Once the SMS system is fully operational, SMS messages will be sent at 11am each day to notify parents/guardians of student absence without reason. Therefore, please remember to contact the office in the morning via phone or email before 11am.

Please feel free to also email your child’s homeroom teacher with absence information.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Kind regards,

Patrick ArcuriDeputy Principal – Staff & Students

A makerspace is a creative, make-it-yourself space where you can create, invent and learn by doing. It focuses on the integration of technology in a constructivist setting where students are encouraged to employ higher order thinking skills to achieve certain learning objectives. The Galen Makerspace is an initiative that has begun as a lunchtime venture. All students and staff have been invited to come along to learn what the space is all about. You are encouraged to play, create and invent and in doing so employ higher order thinking skills to make connections between cross-curricular concepts. The long-term goal is to integrate the concepts of the makerspace into our classrooms.

RE-Connect 2015 - Year 11 & 12Informing and Affirming our Students

This week Galen Catholic College engaged YOURCHOICEZ for the third year to facilitate two separate days for Year 11 and Year 12 students, as part of the RE-Connect program. ‘Your Choicez is a company driven by the passion of David & Katie Kobler; desiring to help young people make great choices around their sexuality and instill clarity in relationship decision making’ (yourchoicez.com.au)

David and Katie facilitated two separate days for male and female students, held at the Wangaratta Turf Club and WPAC. This was the first time that we have separated male and female students. It was highly successful and the powerful personal stories shared by both David and Katie allowed for rich conversation throughout the day. One very valuable part of the day is female and male teachers working with the students in small groups, allowing the issues discussed to be talked through and develop deeper, more meaningful student/ teacher relationships, something we value highly at Galen Catholic College. An extra component of the program this year was a Parents Seminar, focusing upon the hyper-sexualised world of teenagers. It was wonderful to see that 54 parents came out to listen to David’s expertise and knowledge of the world that confronts our teenagers. It was well received and parents stayed to talk and discuss their insights and responses with David and I after it concluded. This is an example of the partnership with parents that we really value at our college.

Here are some responses from our students and parents:

Girls‘Every single girl should listen to what she has to say’‘Very open about topics and opinions were very respected’

‘There are people to help us with issues, you should not be afraid to ask for help’

Boys‘How to be a better man by improving your inner qualities’‘Selflessness’, ‘Put others before yourself’

Parents ‘I just want to say it was fantastic!... I think I got so much useful info to deal with my kids in near future when the time comes to talk about things.’‘I now feel that I know how to talk through an issue we are dealing with at home.’‘Thank you for your running the night very beneficial, fantastic night, …Well done!’

David and Katie work across Australia with many Catholic Schools. We believe the moral messages that they share with students affirms our Christian mes-sage. This is one of sanctity and respect of the body, respect of the opposite sex and that life is about developing respectful relationships. We offer the RE-Connect program as a part of our integrated ap-proach to Catholic Identity, playing out in all areas of our school life; in this case the pastoral care and well-being of our students. The Bible teaches us of many times where Jesus Christ challenged fractured rela-tionships and inequality, calling people to be more for each other and to fully engage in what God was asking of us. This challenge remains for us as Catholic educators and we value the working partnerships we have with parents, living this calling out together.

Jack Luxford

In 2006, sixteen year-old Jack Luxford was a year ten student at Galen Catholic College and participated in the College’s first year of Cows Create Careers. Although Jack had an agricultural background, he had not had exposure to the dairy industry. “I come from an agricultural background with my parents having all types of livestock. My father has been employed at Rivalea since 1988 and my mother has been involved in many other rural projects,” Jack said. “Before I started Cows Create Careers I didn’t have any exposure to the dairy industry. It was definitely an eye opener,” Jack said. “The biggest thing that I learnt was the large amount of opportunities that are in the dairy industry due to the industry’s size and scope. I was fascinated with the whole supply chain and learning about all the factors of production that goes into getting the milk from grass to glass.”Teacher Brian Carr admits that he was initially a little worried how two calves would harmonise with the school’s 1100 students. However the College’s experience with Cows Create Careers has only been positive with the students building caring relationships with the calves.“Cows Create Careers originally started with one year ten class in 2006. Now, two year seven classes learn about the dairy industry through integrated studies.” Brian Carr, Galen Catholic College Science Convenor, said. “The kids love it,” Brian said. “The program is popular with students because it is so different to all the other school activities and the calves provide a hook to engage the students.” “When the calves first arrive at the school, the year seven students are excited and look forward to getting in and trying to feed them. They also have farm visits and visit the Murray Goulburn processing plant, so the students get

to experience the whole process from farm to factory, to the finished product.”Brian said that while most students do not come from an agriculture background, the program is also beneficial for those who do. “90% of the students don’t come from an agriculture back-ground so through the program their awareness of the industry increases. For the students who do come from an agriculture background, it’s also a good opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills and to build their self-esteem.”After completing VCE in 2008, Jack Luxford took a year off to work on a sheep and cropping farm near Ballan, Victoria. In 2010 he commenced a four-year Bachelor of Agricultural Economics degree at The University of Sydney, and in January 2014, the now twenty-three year old, started work-ing as an Agribusiness Analyst at the National Australia Bank (NAB) where he supports a team of agribusiness managers.“I started in the graduate program six months ago and have been in this role for two months now,” Jack said. “Currently I’m working in the Warrnambool Agribusiness team and we have a lot of dairy farmers on our books. Knowledge of the dairy industry is crucial, which all started back with my first exposure through Cows Create Careers.”Jack’s career aspiration is to work his way up to become an agribusiness manager - and his advice for young people considering a career in agribusiness? “Go for it. There is plenty of opportunity out there especially in the dairy industry. The main areas to focus on is making sure you have a solid knowledge of production systems because that’s what drives all agribusiness. If you’re always open to new ideas and have a willingness to learn and develop, you’re bound to have success.”

Catholic IdentityThe recent Year 11 and 12 Rediscovery Days were very thought provoking. Guest speakers, David and Katie Kobler, from Choicez Media, delivered engaging presentations that unpacked contemporary issues for students. Galen teachers also provided input and lead small group discussions and students were generally very positive about the experience.

Adidas School Fun-RunWe will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on Wednesday 24th June within the school grounds.

The School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved.

All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will be used to support the Santa Teresa immersion.

We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday to Disneyland!

You can also help us win an extra $1000 for our school, by participating in the Bupa Family Challenge. We’re encouraging all of our student families to register for the Fun Run Challenge at www.bupafamilychallenge.com.au. The Fun Run Challenge has been designed to help you and your child work together to prepare for the fun run. You will have access to fantastic training exercises, nutrition tips, recipes and health guides to help you get ready for your fun run and develop some healthy habits as a family. The school with the most registrations will win $1000 so every family counts! Remember to enter our school name and the FUN RUN promo code when you register.

Students wanting to track their progress, and use online fundraising, can do so by logging onto schoolfunrun.com.au/students and creating a Student Profile Page.

Finally, we would like to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run event day at the school on Wednesday 24th June to help cheer on the students.

If you would like to volunteer and help out on the day please contact the school on 5721 6322.

Year 7-9 Girls AFL

Game 1: Galen defeated WMYC. 3-1-25 to 1-17.Galen girls ran into this game all guns blazing and improved with every minute that passed. They tried some pretty dodgy passes with plenty of throwing, but in the end this forced them to work on their handballing and by the end of the game it was on point. Amber Ferraro was shrug-ging players left and right, showing everyone how it was done, and Bridie Nixon was in the best due to her con-stant talking and encouragement. Goals: Zoe Rasmussen - 2, Sophie Burns – 1, Jessie Gerrish – 1.

Game 2: Catholic College Wodonga defeated Galen. 4-4-22 to 0-1-1. After watching CCW smash the team before them, the Galen girls were timid in the beginning but again, gained confidence. They laid excellent tackles and chased down every loose ball and every loose player, which is a credit to them when taking on such a hard opponent. They were always having a go and caused many stop-pages. Baylee Holland was found to be putting her body on the line, and Madi O’Keefe could be heard from miles away and did not stop running the entire game, applying pressure wherever possible.

Throughout the day, the girls became waterboys and goal umpires and also ran the boundary. They also played a ‘grudge match’ against the Wan-garatta HS girls to conclude the day, they came away with a win, but more importantly they had a good time.

Madison O’Keefe was named best on the day.

Team: Bridie Nixon, Liv Annett, Abbey Snowdon, Sophie Burns, Riley Coveney, Anna Wallis, Danielle French, Maddison Clark, Jessie Gerrish, Mackenzie Byrne, Hannah Wright, Lauren Torpey, Shayla Leavett-Brown, Zoe Rasmussen, Erin Allen, Mia Condon, Sarah Borbidge, Baylee Holland, Amber Ferraro, Grace McIntyre, Ella McCarthy, Madi O’Keefe, Eliza Angel, Shani Rickard.

Upper Hume Intermediate Boys Football Competition

On Wednesday 6th of May the Galen 9 & 10 football side competed in the Upper Hume intermediated competition. The four teams competing on the day were Cathedral College Wanagaratta, Marion College Myrtleford, Wangaratta High School and Galen.

All games were played at Wareena Park in Wangaratta and the day started with beautiful bright sunshine and some early morning dew which made for slippery conditions to start the first game. Galen started very well in the first game. The defence was extremely tight not allowing any goals, the mid field were quick and very precise with both kicking and handballing and the forward line was dominate as the forwards continually provided options and made the most of their opportunities when kicking for goal.

Galen 9.5 51 def Cathedral 0.1 1Best: Lachie Hourigan, Tyler Spencer, Will Creed, Connor Goodison, Paul Sanderson, Harry Smart

In Galen’s second game against Marian College the conditions were much better. The dew had gone and there was no wind. Galen provided Marion with some of its best players to help out Marion who were struggling for numbers. It was great to see the sportsmanship by players who were more than willing to help out a team in need. This made Marion more competitive however although all the players who help out at Marion were in the best the Galen team clearly had lots of depth. Those players who didn’t get much game time in the first game stepped up and played really well.

Galen 11.8 74 def Marion 0.2.2Best: Alex Patton, Joe Richards, Jack Gerrish, Lachie Moore, Riley Petts, Ollie WillettBest Marion: Paul Sanderson, Lachie Bendendo, Jordy Storer, Ryan Holt

The last game for the day was Galen Vs Wangaratta High School and the expecta-tion was that it should prove to be a very even contest as both teams were undefeated for the day. It certainly turned out to be a great contest. The High School got off to a terrific start and kick 3 goals straight to Galen’s 2 goals and 5 points. Inaccurate kicking could have been the difference however Galen steadied in the second half and were able to kick 5 more goals whereas the High School were only able to kick 1 goal.

Galen 7.7 49 Def WHS 4.1 25Best: Joe Richards, Frazer Judd, Riley Petts, Tyler Spencer, Ryan Holt, Lachie Bendendo, Macauley Murtagh

Well done to all the players on the day. We had many players that clearly played exceptionally well. The spirit and sportsmanship of all was commendable. Also thanks to those students that assisted as they did an excellent job and were also great ambassadors for Galen.

VCAL Numeracy – finding PiIn a fun maths activity to end the week, VCAL Numeracy students measured the circumference and diameter of a few biscuits and chocolates in order to find the relationship between them.

The students noticed that no matter what size circle they had, the Circumference divided by the Diameter always ended up being about 3.1. Which they soon discovered was an approximation of Pi = 3.14159265359... And at the end of this marvellous mathematical discovery they got to eat the biscuits, whilst listening to a music visualisation of Pi, which you can listen to here: www.piday.org/2015/an-irrational-auralization-of-225-digits-of-pi

Advanced Art Classes

If you love Art and are thinking about doing an Arts subject in VCE you need to join this class. We work in materials and techniques that we often don’t get time to do in school classes, so that your skills are at a better standard and ready for Year 12. This will help you to achieve a higher score. You will learn to work indepen-dently with like minded students, learn how to use a visual diary for documentation and experience artist level materials & techniques involved in oil, gouache, watercolor, etching, collagraph, stencil and many drawing mediums… Or any of your personal interests.

Spaces are currently available for students from Year 7-12. Current class participants range from Year 9, 10, 11 and 12.

WHEN: WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL - 4 - 6pm
