VCAL construct new seatsOn Thursday 12th November Year 11 VCAL officially opened newly constructed seats outside the college Engineering building. Students involved in the project have completed the work as part of the VCAL – Work Related Skills class. Galen teacher Mal Vickery has been instrumental in coordinating the project, and in addition to the new seats, students have also built their own pizza ovens. Students had the opportunity to share their hard work with teachers last Thurs-day at the opening, along with gourmet pizza’s, fresh from their new ovens. VCAL Co-ordinator Beth Code stated, “It’s great seeing the students apply what they’ve learnt in class to a real construction project. It allows them to work together and make a positive contribution toward the college.”

The Mighty Beast By Sam Allen (8/7)

There it wasThe most spectacular thing I had ever experienced.

The unique visual spectacle was, Something that seemed very unreal.

It seemed that this mighty beast, Was mother to all around it,

The natural worlds elder.Shrubs around the mighty beast,

Bow down as if, Slaves to their king.

But somehow,It doesn’t seem to threaten anything.

As I walk past the mighty beast,Seeing the gallery of aboriginal rock art,

In its natural wonder. Touching the giant red sand pit,

Under my feet.Hearing the fresh rain water,

Gushing over the bright red cliff face.Flies are zipping past as if,

I’m the finish line to a Bathurst. Birds humming around,

Racing people up the mighty beast.

Watching the sun go down over the bright red Uluru,The mighty gracious beast.

Flash back By Chelsea Currie (8/4)

The swishing and swaying of trees,Children playing on their knees.Remembering the memories by my death bed,Waiting for light to show me ahead.I may be gone but yet it seems I am not dead,Alive in your memory, time might freeze,But just remember, when we were both on our knees.

Backwards By Katelyn Papakostas (8/4)

TimeThere is never enough time

You don’t know what it’s worth until it’s gone.Until it leaves you torn.

Until it leaves you without the one you love most.Until it makes you fear boast.

Go backI have to go back

Go back Against timeTo save her.

I have to go backAnd go backAnd go back

As many times as it takesTo save her

Time took her too youngAnd left me feeling dumb

As I watched the gunBeing fired.

I will go backIf that is all I can do

I will go back Until this terror is through

I will go back And know it was you

I will go backIn time

As the sun fallsBy Josh Devine (8/4)

Birds stop singingIt’s silent

It all stopsEvery thing asleep

The Lonely PianoBy Kate Jolly (8/7) Looming by its lonesome,Waiting readilyTo let out its sound so handsome,To show off its sweet symphony. My fingers flutteringOver the strips of ebony and spruce. Each string resonatingAs the chords call a truce. With every tantalizing trillAnd every rampant resonanceThe notes seem to fillThe room with eloquence. As my fingers leave the keysAnd my foot leaves the pedal,The lingering notes seem to seizeAnd the echo seems to gentle… And the piano is lonely once more.

A night in dark paradiseBy Matilda Drage (8/7)

Tall trees trembling in the windStars shining like broken glass

The night had truly set inDew was forming on the grass

The Moon smiled through the cloudsAs the wolves howled and worshipped

The nocturnal animals come out hungry and proudBalancing on tree roots then they tripped

They were just battered and bruisedThe moon was on the run,But the sun was in pursuit

And now this poem is truly done

This World of GamesBy Katelyn Papakostas (8/4)

The power button lights upThe machine hums as it comes to lifeThe keys light up like stars in the sky

As I sit in this placeReady to fight.

This is the placewhere I fight for honour.

This is the placewhere I am sometimes a loner.

This is the placewhere there is no time to go slower.

This place Is made of pixels

That make up the pictureOf adventure.

This placeIs where you can jump

into the screenand live in a virtual world.

This placeis where I game.

Junior Production - Aladdin

After several weeks of performance rehearsals, band practice and set design sessions, over 100 students from Years 7 - 10 lit up the stage in Aladdin last Monday and Tuesday. Production Director Julie Nolan stated, “Our Junior Production is utilised as a great educational tool, whereby students from year 10 are given the opportunity to take on leadership roles as directors and choreographers, leading students from years 7-9. It’s always pleasing to see how well they all work together.”

Year 7 Girls Hume Cricket The Year 7 Girls cricket team had a great day at the Barr Reserve on Thursday 29th October. Despite their slow start to the day, they came home strongly in their last two games to claim third spot. The girls showed terrific skill and excellent sportsmanship throughout day. Special mentions going to Bailey Thwaites for scoring 28 off one over and to Molly Campbell for her great bowling. Woman of the tournament went to Sophia McCarthy, who led the way with the most runs and most wickets for the day. Well done girls! Thanks to Mr Beattie who organized and coached the team.

Year 7 & 8 Boys and Girls Tennis

The Junior School tennis teams had a very successful day at the Upper Hume competi-tion held at the Wodonga Tennis Centre on Friday 30th October.

Year 8 Boys – ChampionsThe Year 8 boys’ tennis team consisted of Sam Allen, Luke Toohey, Andrew Lindner, Mitchell Holt and Josh Masters. The boys won all of their matches quite easily, with Sam and Luke finishing the day undefeated in all of their sets. Tennis debutant, Mitch Holt won his first ever singles match. Andrew and Josh also played some good tennis throughout the day.

Year 7 Boys – ChampionsThe Year 7 boys’ tennis team consisted of Lukas Evans, Will Gulbin, Lachlan Carboon, Tim Seeger and Joel McGennisken. The Year 7 boys easily accounted for Wangaratta High School and Catholic College Wodonga. However, they were pushed right to the wire by Cathedral College, winning by just one game after they were even on sets. After surprisingly losing their first set, Lukas and Will won their second set in a tie-breaker to get Galen over the line.

Year 8 Girls – 3rd OverallThe Year 8 girls’ tennis team consisted of Rebecca Johnstone, Mia Dalzotto, Mollie Shanley, Reagan Tomaino and Teaghan Stone. The Year 8 girls were hoping to emulate their success from last year, but it was not to be. Marian College Myrtleford was by far the strongest team on the day. The Galen girls did however have a great win over Wodonga Middle Years College, Huon.

Year 7 Girls – ChampionsThe Year 7 girls’ tennis team consisted of Sophia McCarthy, Georgia Sampson, Charlotte Proft, Meg Allan and Leah Nolan. The Year 7 girls had almost identical scores to their Year 7 male counterparts, winning two matches quite comfortably, but defeating Cathedral College by just one game. Like the boys, it came down to the last set, with Meg and Charlotte winning in the tie-breaker.

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Hill for selecting and coaching the teams.

The 3 successful teams will now play in the Hume competition at the Wangaratta Lawn tennis club on Thursday 12th November.

Game 1: Galen defeated Corryong: 32-8The girls started the day strong, but there was very little talk and they made sloppy mistakes in the early part of the game. Jorja Reidy was shooting well, with a ripper right on the siren. Gabby Wales started the day all guns blazing, with many steals, often converting them into Galen points. Galen kept Corryong to a nil score at half time, with Liv Richards gaining confidence going into the halftime break and having a few shots. Jade Elliott took charge in the second half and let her teammates know where they needed to be and what they needed to do. Ellie Laffy was popping up plenty of shots with confidence. The girls played well in a strange game, as there was too much stopping and starting, which made it hard for the girls to stick to the pace of the game. An exciting start to the day, giving the girls the confidence they needed.

Game 2: Galen defeated Shepparton High School: 65-8The girls started the game with more encouragement and talking, with Tess Larkin always having something to say to her teammates, with a huge grin on her face, she also grabbed plenty of rebounds and played unselfishly. Tilly Bedendo was also strong in defense, and was backed up by Jade and Jorja who were already ready to shoot. Galen fol-lowed instructions well and changed the flow of play so they were in charge of the speed. Ellie found herself flying across the court not once, but twice, and the second time she shot and scored whilst limping it off. Gabby’s shooting style was

on point and the girls made Galen proud showing great sportsmanship and camaraderie against a much weaker opponent.

Game 3 (final): Galen defeated Benalla P-12: 40-14The final saw Galen come up against a hard opponent, and they went in cold after barely being challenged in their previous two games. Tilly and Tess consistently produced strong rebounds, helping out Jade in defense who was putting pressure on and showing great leadership. Talking and encouragement was at an all-time high, especially from the bench (thanks Liv). In the first half, Benalla made it hard to score, but with strong defense in the second half, Galen ran all over a rough opposition. Jorja had a particularly good game where she took control and played tough. She face planted the wall and somersaulted out of a block, but never slowed down once, shooting 29 points.

A big thank you to Eddy Dayman and Ollie Willett for being ball boys, scorers, timers and pseudo-assistant coaches on the day.

The girls will be travelling to MSAC for the State competition on the 17th of November, so wish them luck if you see them around. Well done ladies, you rock! Written by Ash Burke

Students jump for joy after final Year 12 exam

Ten Galen students were jumping for joy on Wednesday 18th November as they completed their final VCE exam, on the final day for VCE exams across the state. Students expressed that it was particularly difficult to remain focused during the last week of the exam period, as many of their peers had already completed all of their exams. However, it was evident that there was a sense of great relief after the group of ten had jumped over their final hurdle for VCE Italian. Shortly

after finishing, students discussed plans to celebrate in the evening and were anticipating a well-deserved break away from the books. The entire Year 12 2015 cohort will gather at Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Thursday November 19th for the 2015 Graduation Evening, which will be a memorable occasion for students, parents and teachers who have guided them throughout their secondary years.
