SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORT2020 has certainly been a year that no-one will forget; a year that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will read about in their history classes.

I would like to thank the school community for your resilience in the face of adversity, your kindness to others through difficult times and your support of the school.

We have learnt a great deal this year, including how to use a wide range of technological platforms to keep in touch and continue our work from home. Our teachers learnt new skills very rapidly, with the assistance of our technology support officer, Nathan, so that we could support our students to learn from home. This was also an enormously steep learning curve for our students and parents, many of whom also accessed Nathan’s expertise to set up their electronic devices.

In the aftermath of this rapid learning we have discovered that many technologies, including google classroom, can support us to communicate more effectively and has enabled students to keep up with their class work when absent from school. However, I believe that the importance of human relationships has been reinforced for each of us.

I believe that strong, respectful relationships are at the centre of every success and achievement, particularly in schools. Here at Tweed River, we have a strong focus on building positive relationships from the point of enrolment through to the day of graduation. We have been fortunate that over recent weeks restrictions have eased to enable our incoming year 7 students to attend the school for an onsite orientation. Ms Taylor and I visited these students in their primary schools early in Term 1 and it was lovely to reconnect with them and see how much they have grown across the course of the year. I taught drama lessons to two classes, the members of which impressed me with their enthusiasm and maturity and I look forward to spending more time with these young people next year.

Our Year 10 peer support leaders played an instrumental role in welcoming our new students on orientation day and will continue to support them as they move into the new year. These students will give up the last day of their summer holiday to spend time with year 7 students on their first day of high school. Our peer support program not only supports our new students; it provides leadership training and opportunities for our Year 10 students as they prepare to enter the senior school.

Last week we were able to hold two annual presentation events, which were video recorded and are available for you to view at your convenience. I am very proud of our award recipients and every student who achieved their personal goals this year. We were fortunate to have our 2019 DUX, Jasmine Cooke return to receive her award, along with out outgoing student leaders. While our student leaders always play a significant role in the school, often focussing on the coordination of events to build school spirit, this year’s group took a special interest in caring for others through COVID; often sending entertaining video clips to the student body to lift their spirits.

Our HSC students will receive their results this Friday, the 18th December. I wish them every success for their future, whichever path they follow and have been pleased to see so many of our students offered early entry to University for 2021.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas. I hope you are able to spend time with friends and family who you may not have been able to see throughout the year and you enjoy your time together. I hope that every student takes the time to rest and to spend time with the people they care about.

I look forward to a safe and successful 2021.

    Ms Leisa Conroy, Principal

LIBRARY NEWSOur 2020 Reading Challenge was our most successful ever. I am so pleased to announce that approximately 80 students from Year 7 to Year 10 attempted the challenge. We rewarded almost 50 students who successfully completed the challenge, thanks to our amazing sponsors. A very special thank you to Justine Elliot and Geoff Provost for their generous support.

Congratulations to all our students but particularly to our winners: Alani in Year 7, Ivy in Year 8, Rayah in Year 9 and Cody in Year 10.

Long summer holidays are a great time to connect and reconnect with stories so put your smart phones down and read or maybe you prefer to draw or build something. Have fun!

The library staff (Jacqui Kyle, Phil Whitehead and myself) wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Ms Monniot-Kerr, Teacher Librarian
