Amalfi Coast Weddings

Introduction

The Amalfi Coast runs 28 miles along the southern coastline of Italy, interupted by reathtaking cliffside roads, scenic beauty and tiled picturesque towns.

It has a Mediterranean climate, warm summers and mild winters. Strong traditions, classical ruins, and enchanting beaches - the ideal place for your wedding or honeymoon experience.

This coast is filled with ancient villages known worldwide, they are popular tourist spots with a higher price tag than most other locations in Italy.

The only land route to the Amalfi Coast is the 40 kilometres (25 mile) long route, which runs along the coastline from the town of Vietri sul Mare in the east to Positano in the west.

The Amalfi Coast is known for its production of limoncello (a lemon liqueur). The lemons are grown in terraced gardens along the entire coast between February and October adding a beautiful citrus aroma to the area! Amalfi is also a known maker of a hand-made, thick paper which is called bambagina - keep that in mind for your stationary!

The Legal ‘Bits’ Required For Civil Ceremonies in Italy

Civil ceremonies are performed by mayors or other authorised officials of the Italian state. There is no residency requirement in Italy, however, in many locations you are required to sign a Declaration of Intention to Marry two to four days prior to your marriage ceremony. These proceedings are in Italian, so unless you are fluent in Italian, an approved interpreter will be required.

In order for your marriage to be celebrated in Italy the following documents will be required a minimum of one month prior to your arrival:

• Original or certified copies of your long form birth certificates.• Nulla Osta (the civil letter of freedom to marry) which can be obtained, depending on

your nationality, from your consulate or Department of Foreign Affairs (Irish passport holders).

• Photocopy of Bride and groom’s passports.• Photocopy of passports of your two witnesses with details of their marital status,

occupation and place of residence.

If either the bride or groom have been previously married the following documents will also be required:• Certified copy of previous marriage certificate(s).• Original divorce (decree absolute) or death certificate(s) of previous spouse(s).• If either party had a name change, the original deed poll will be required.• Should the names on any documents differ; a solicitor’s letter will be required.

Please note: This is a guide. Procedures above may change or vary depending on nationality. Documents and residency requirements are subject to change. Please check with your Italian Embassey for a full list of required documents.

The Legal ‘Bits’ Required For Catholic Weddings in Italy

A Catholic Wedding Ceremony can only be celebrated in a Catholic Church in Italy (as with most other countries). It can be celebrated between members of different faiths provided one partner is Catholic. A Letter of Dispensation is required from your local parish priest and bishop to marry a non-Catholic and also to marry in another parish/country.

For a Catholic wedding in Italy you need the same paperwork as listed for Civil Ceremonies PLUS the following documents will be required a minimum of one month prior to your arrival:

• Baptism Certificate• Confirmation Certificate• Certificate of Pre-Marriage Course• Religious Nulla Osta from your bishop• Letter of Dispensation from your parish priest

Religious documents are only valid for six months and must be in the parish in Italy at least 30 days before the wedding day.

Humanist, Blessings & Vow Renewals

If you wish to have a blessing in Italy and the civil marriage in your own country this can be arranged. There is no required paperwork for this as it is not a legally binding ceremony.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR IRISH CITIZEN

Additional Paperwork required by Irish citizens:

To get married in Italy an Irish passport holder must apply for a Certificate of Nulla Osta.

Apply to Department of Foreign Affairs, Contact 01-408-2568. Request the forms required for the NULLA OSTA for Italy.

Apply at least four months before your Italian wedding date. The forms must be fully completed, notarised and returned to the Department of Foreign Affairs no later than three months before your Italian wedding date. There is a list of required documents to be sent with the application; the Department of Foreign Affairs will advise. You will need to know where you are getting married and the date of the wedding before applying so time to start planning!!

Your Nulla Osta application will be sent by the Department of Foreign Affairs directly to the Irish Embassy in Rome which will then forward it to the region where you will be married in Italy.

If you are not an Irish national the process above will be different. Contact your consulate.
