STEWARDSHIP
“My God will supply whatever you need…” - Philippians 4:19 God really does provide for those who are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say its just coincidence.
If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time in prayer, talent in charitable works and treasure and see how
God provides for your needs.

Wedding Banquet Matthew 22:1-14

Issue #30
Ask Father James: Happy Thanksgiving
For what shall we give thanks? For my family, for my children and grandchildren, for being a Canadian and living in Canada
and in Saskatchewan; for the bumper harvest; for surviving covid! Or that illness that almost smoked me out? For what else?
The list is limitless.
In the parable of the wedding banquet in Matthew 22:1-14, invitations were sent out to come give thanks for the gift of having
the "Bridegroom." It was a Thanksgiving invite for the "SON." Some of the invited not only refused the invitation, but they
abused the set of servants sent and even killed some of them. They were “recalcitrant or rebellious. The consequence of their
rejection of the invitations finally led to a universal invitation.
Many people have wondered what this parable really means. First, I like us to note the lack of a bride at the celebration. This
text is the root of the New Testament reference to Jesus as the “bridegroom” and consequently, the bride of Christ is the
Church. The invitation is from God to all to come to the church for an ongoing wedding feast. The banquet hall is the church
gathered. This is why this parable is also known as the messianic banquet (the banquet is a royal wedding feast) or
“eschatological banquet,” in thanksgiving for God's gift to the world of his son the bridegroom of the church. The invitation
because it is an invite from God, makes the feast an apocalyptic banquet or an eschatological banquet at which the Messiah,
the Christ is at the head table (The altar). And at every Mass, Christ is fully present, body, blood, soul, and divinity, under the
appearances of bread and wine.
But how do we interpret the absence of the wedding garment by one of the attendees which is clearly a serious offense to the
host? One scholar says, it means; "go humbly and be dressed as befits servants of God." Another says; A certain guest,
addressed as is "not properly dressed" represent those who though present at the banquet but do not believe that the
bridegroom is the son of God since the parable serves to highlight the role of Jesus as a central figure in the messianic banquet
actualized as head of the church.
Some people have pointed to this text of the messianic banquet table invitation as the foundation for Ecumenism - a decentred
oikoumene (Greek- οἰκουμένη) in which different contexts of doctrinal expressions, traditions, and memories of faith have
been invited. This metaphor suggests a diversity of faith and that the guest who was not wearing a wedding garment suggests
the one who did not accept God's revelation in Jesus Christ. Pointing out to the possibility that in some instances there is a real
possibility for some so claimed community of churches to sneak into the Messianic banquet. The continuing resistance of
dominant churches to their presence at the banquet has been construed as creating tensions and difficulties in the "fellowship
of churches."
Once again, I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. As we celebrate, please, don't forget to give thanks for the gift of the
"SON of GOD." And remember, we all are invited to the banquet of Thanksgiving at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Regina, at
every Mass.
