Park regulations to follow or things to remember
• Enteringtheparkwithoutapermitisillegal.Parkpersonnelmayaskforthepermit,sovisitorsarerequestedtokeepthepermitwiththematalltimes.

The park is virtually surrounded by a 130 km long stone wall,having95kmlonggraveled-roadand83kmfoottrailsconstructedfortrekking.Therearefewhotels/lodgesinbufferzone.Trainedandexperiencednatureguidesareavailableindifferententrancegates.
How to get the park
SNNP is connected with networks of roads and trekkingroutes. Public bus services are available. Common routes areSundhara–Jamal–Maharajgunj–Budhanilkantha–Panimuhan,Sundhara–Chabahil–Sundarijal, Sundhara–Chabahil–Sankhu,Sundhara–Jamal–Samakhusi–Tokha–Jhor, Sundhara–Jamal–Balaju–Nagarjun, Sundhara–Jamal–Balaju–Kakani. Visitorscan enter into the park through Chisapani, Jhule, Sundarijal,Mahankal, Panimuhan, Tokha, Jagat, Kakani and NagarjunFulbarigate,payingentryfeesonsite.

Background
Initially Shivapuri National Park, gazetted in 2002, covering anareaof 144 km2was renamedasShivapuriNagarjunNationalPark(SNNP),aftertheadditionofNagarjunforestpatch(15Km2)in2009.GeographicallyShivapuriforestlocatedwithin27°45’to27°52’Nlatitudeand85°16’to85°45’ElongitudeandNagarjunforest is located within 27°43’ to 27°46’ N latitude and 85°13’to 85°18’ E longitude. It covers parts of Kathmandu,Nuwakot,Sindhupalchowk and Dhading districts of central Nepal andelevation range from 1350m to 2732m abovemean sea level.It is only the protected area that represents flora, fauna andecosystem of middle Mountain. It is situated on the NorthernfringeoftheKathmanduvalleyandtheparkheadofficeislocatedinPanimuhan,BudanilakanthamunicipalityofKathmandudistrict.

SNNP is a fresh water source for Kathmandu valley. Nagmati,Bagmati,Syalmati,Bishnumati,Rudramati,Sangala,TusalKholaand their tributaries of SNNP are the prime source of drinkingwaterforKathmanduvalley.Theseriversandstreamsdischargeabout30millionlitersofwaterperday.
The park area is surrounded by heavy sub-urban population.The Buffer Zone (BZ) of SNNP was declared in 2016. TheobjectivesofBZistoconserveandmanageforeststofulfilldailybasicneedsof localcommunityresidingintheperipheryoftheSNNP. It covers an area of 118.61 km2, which covers part ofKathmandu,NuwakotSindhupalchokandDhadingdistricts.Thereare14,558householdswithpopulationof79,776residingintheBZ.TheNationalParksandWildlifeConservationAct,1973hasmadeaprovisionofploughingback30-50%ofthePark’srevenueintocommunitydevelopmentandconservationofthebufferzone.

Major flora and fauna
FloraldiversityishighinSNNPduetoitslocation,altitudinalandclimaticvariations.Thepark is locatedinsub-tropicalandlowertemperatezoneofNepal.Itharborsatotalof2,122plantspecies,129speciesofmushrooms,50macro fungi species.Therearemore than1250floweringplants including16endemicspecies.57speciesofmedicinalplantsand49speciesofedibleplantsarereported.TheSNNPcomprisesfourtypesofforestsviz.(i)Lowermixedhardwoodforests,(ii)Chirpineforests,(iii)Oakforestsand(iv) Upper mixed hardwood forests, which support rich faunaland floral diversitywith a number of protected, threatened andendemic wildlife species. Schima wallichii, Castanopsis indica, Alnus nepalensis, Pinus roxburghii, Quercus semicarpifolia, Quercus lanuginose, Rhododendron arboretum arethedominantvegetationinthispark.
Faunal diversity of the park includes 24 species of mammalsincluding 9 threatened species. Clouded leopard (Pardofelis nebulosa), two species of pangolin (Manis spp.), Assamesemonkey (Macaca assamensis), Leopard cat (Prionailurusbengalensis) are the protected mammals found in SNNP.CommonmammalsincludeCommonLeopard(Panthera pardus),
HimalayanBlackBear (Ursus thibetanus), Goral (Naemorhedus goral),JungleCat(Felis chaus),WildBoar(Sus scrofa), BarkingDeer (Muntiacus muntijack),Sambar (Cervus unicolor),Rhesusmonkey (Macaca mulata),Porcupine(Hystrix indica),HimalayanSerrow (Capricornis thar), yellow throated marten (Martes flavigula),largeIndiancivet(Viverra zibetha), maskedpalmcivet(Paguma larvata),flyingsquirrel(Petaurista spp.),mongoosesandbats.Itishometo106speciesofmothandbutterflies,andonlyhabitat for the relictHimalayanDragonfly (Epiophlebia laidlawi)inNepal.318speciesofbirdsfoundinthepark,14ofthemarethreatened including spiny babbler (Turdoides nepalensis), anendemicspecies.About117speciesofbirdsrecordedinSNNPareofmigratorynature.Someof thethreatenedbirdspeciesofSNNP includeOrientalhobby,Grey-sidedLaughingThrushandCinerousvulture,Whitebackedvulture,Himalayangriffon,blackvulture,beardedvulture,darkkite,henharrier,goshawk,sparrowhawk,sikhra,commonbuzzard,Asianblackeagle,steppeeagle,magpies,kalijpheasant,leafbirds,flycatcher,bushchat,babblers,cuckoos, bulbul, swift, warblers and wren babbler (Pnoepyga pusilla)areCommonspeciesofbirdfoundinSNNP.
