Julia and Pat Lovett desperately need to sell their Forest Lake home in Queensland. They’re in dire financial trouble after Pat’s recent illness and forced unemployment. They’ve been trying the sell privately for 12 months and despite a decent number of viewings no one has taken the plunge. The Lovett family is a very happy, tight knit group but this situation is causing a lot of tears and anxiety. Julia is concerned the stress of not being able to sell is further affecting Pat’s health. This Property is a strange mix of styles and textures and Julia’s interior design efforts are now working against the sale. Mustard coloured, suede effect paint is a definite turn off for buyers. Now it’s time to tone down the exterior and modernize the interior.

Summary of works – Interior

The biggest problem with this house was the suede mustard colour walls and the over use of matching dark tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms. The high upright in the kitchen created a barrier, which disconnected it from the eating and entertaining areas of the home. Getting rid of this and installing new appliances, tap ware and vanities in the bathroom added that clean modern touch. A mammoth paint job fixed the dated colour scheme on the interior walls whilst spraying the tiles in the bathroom and kitchen brought these areas up to date. Downstairs the bar in the rumpus room had to be cleaned up. This started with the culling of corrugated zinc that had found it’s way into most areas of the house. Putting in dark blinds allowed the light in as well as privacy from the Carport. The bedrooms needed a severe de-cluttering as well as a fresh new look, which was helped by new furniture and a sprinkling of accessories

Summary of works – Exterior

From the ‘beachy’ styling and overuse of the zinc sheeting… something had to give. To change the initial impact of the property Charlie decided to replace this sheeting with rendered green-board and a new front door. He removed the half posts and chains and replaced the decking and the door at the entrance. A general clean up and mulching of the front yard really helped the overall street appeal. A big focus area for Charlie was the back deck area. He ripped out the dated timber and catenary-wire fencing and replaced it with a glass balustrade. This opened up the area, giving it a nice modern twist. Painting the deck and rafters in a light shade also helped brighten the area. The cabana got a spruce up as well.
