Feedback weve received from students has confirmed that the library has an important role to play in their education. [From focus groups with students (2014), students confirmed that the library supported their academic goals and the instruction they received from librarians helped them understand how to do effective research.] Students have noted the importance of knowing and using library resources and services in order to succeed as a university student. This morning I am going to share some information about the librarys space, resources, and services.

"The library is my favorite place to diligently study ..." Space: (for various purposes; food; wireless)First of all, a little bit about our space. Space is important to our students, and often especially so to freshmen. Students appreciate the different types of space we have available. We have both quiet areas and collaborative areas in addition to workrooms that can be reserved for group study. Weve heard from students that they appreciate that we allow food in the library so they dont have to disrupt their studies to eat elsewhere. We also have wireless computing in the building or if student prefer they can also plug in with an Ethernet cable. The library building is currently open so if you have a few moments today feel free to take a look at the library space. [Click]

Resources/Collections: (robust collection; aimed at majors offered)As students progress through their students, weve found that the resources become increasing important for them. Students have access to our local collection which includes approximately 100 000 print books, over 4 million online books, 70 000 plus online journals, and approximately 600 databases. Our databases include resources such as magazine & newspaper articles, streaming music, scholarly peer reviewed journals, plays etc. In addition, students can also access over 37 million items that are in the University of California System. These collections have been purchased and subscribed to in keeping with the courses and majors offered on campus and are a rich resource for your students as they complete projects and papers and work on research with professors. We recently conducted focus groups with some undergraduate students, and they were very impressed by the collection available to them.(importance of access; to use the collection) From the numbers, it is clear that a large part of our collection is online. We like to make your students aware that they can still get to online articles and ebooks even when they are not in the Library or not on campus. Students can easily access this information from any other Internet connection if they are connected via the VPN (which is the Virtual Private Network), provided by the university. [Click]

Research HelpInterlibrary Loan

InstructionServices: (Reference Assistance inc. 24/7 chat; Interlibrary loan) Lastly, I would like to highlight a couple of our services for students. We have many resources, and we want to see them used by our students in support of their academic success. Students can contact librarians with questions regarding how to find information. To make this easy, weve offered students a number of ways that they can get a hold of us including making an appointment, emailing, posting a note in Facebook, chatting through a 24/7 service which we participate in -- as do other librarians in the UC system and librarians from other academic institutions. One student we spoke with this spring noted that the 24/7 chat service was very helpful for a last minute question before a paper was due at midnight. [focus group 2014]So if your student says I cant find anything for my paper or Im not sure how to start my research, please encourage them to contact us.*We often see a number of students through instruction sessions when we are invited to participate in specific classes. We provide students with strategies and resources for completing their assignments. Some of the main take-aways students have reported to us are -- how to use and find information in databases, how to locate credible sources to support an argument, and how to find scholarly or academic information.* I mentioned that students can also access the 37 million items in the larger UC system. Though we have a substantial collection locally, students can request other articles or books through our Interlibrary Loan Service at no additional cost. Many of these items are brought in from other UC campuses. This service is to support the papers and projects students are required to complete and is not intended to replace textbook purchasing; however, it is a fabulous service for students who need materials that we may not have locally. Conclusion: We do hope that your students will use the Library to support their academic success by taking advantage of the space, resources and services available to them. We look forward to working with them.
