MOBILE, Alabama -- Kind weather and an even kinder dose of tree shade brought out a record number of people and dogs today to Bienville Square to benefit a soon-to-be-upgraded local animal shelter.

Nearly 4,000 people visited the square Sunday for the seventh annual Woofstock dog’s day out and benefit for the Animal Rescue Foundation, according to Amanda Kramer, the foundation’s event director.

A year ago, Woofstock was held in the smaller Cathedral Square, a few blocks west of Bienville Square. “Today, we’ve got more space and more shade, we’re up from seven vendor tents to 37, and look at all the people who came,” Kramer said.

It was a timely benefit for ARF as well. According to Kramer, the foundation is moving soon from its current facility on Holcombe Avenue.

Once the foundation can make a $42,000 payment, she said, ARF will operate from a larger complex with more shelter space on Commerce Boulevard off Rangeline Road, not far from the No. 7 fire station.

Sunday’s event got them much closer to opening the new facility, she said.

Record turnout comes to Bienville Square for 7th annual Woofstock animal shelter benefit

Dasey, the one-eyed black and tan coon hound owned by Darryl and Cindy Wilson of Theodore, won Best in Show for this year's Woofstock dog costume contest. Wilson said the dog wsa adopted from a grand Bay shelter called Lost Without You.

Some dogs simply flaunted their natural magnificence. Few did so better than Hugo, a snowy white great Pyrenees that Kristy Doss of Mobile brought to the square. The large breed comes from the mountainous border country of Spain, France and Andorra and were originally bred as livestock guard dogs, Doss said.

There were 2 race categories at this year’s Woofstock. A total of 34 dogs were signed up for the weiner dog race. After 6 heats and a final, the winning weiner was Molly, whose master is Melissa Stanford of Mobile. David and Dawn Bowers entered Bodhi, named after a character in a Steely Dan song, and they came away with the trophy in the small breed race earlier in the afternoon.

Booths promoting everything from pet food, boarding and grooming lined the walkways of the square. One booth offered vaccinations.

Four musical acts kept people entertained during the five-hour event. BreAnna Gray and Henry Hammer’s, and then the Mobile Songwriters, started things off with acoustic sounds before Top of the Orange and Redfield amped things up for Woofstock’s later hours.

Kramer said the new ARF shelter should be ready by the end of the year. •

All afternoon, the square’s oaks shielded the 80-degree sunny weather from human and dog alike. Many dogs, and a number of their two-legged companions, came dressed gaudily for a costume contest.

This year’s best of show winner was Dasey, a black and tan coon hound that is missing an eye. Darryl and Cindy Wilson adopted Dasey from Lost Without You, an animal shelter in Grand Bay, Darryl Wilson said.Dasey and Darryl Wilson came festooned in balloons in a clown theme.

While football allegiance dominated the dog costuming at Woofstock a year ago, the dress-ups were far more diversified this year. There was a pink “dog for the cause,” a Bob Marley dog, a 5-dog band called “MuttleyCrew,” A Willie Wonka entry and a number of pirate pups.

What does Woofstock mean for ARF?

ARF went from this 1400 sq ft

building on Holcombe Ave…..

To this AMAZING 8,000 sq ft facility in just a few short

years. This, in part, thanks to Woofstock and YOUR support!

Our Mission: Our mission is to bring about a time where there are no more homeless pets, to eliminate suffering of animals and to increase public awareness of the philosophy of reverence of life.

Animal Rescue Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in December 1995 and dedicated to promoting the welfare and humane treatment of animals, through rescue, fostering and placement. Adoptable cats and dogs awaiting a permanent, loving family are placed in our foster center, hence its name, the ARFanage. We operate solely from donations. Adoption donations are $95 for dogs, $70 for cats. All pets placed for adoption have been socialized, evaluated and seen by a vet. All are micro chipped, up to date on shots, up to date on heartworm preventative and spayed/neutered before placement.

ARF advocates on behalf of all individual animals about the humanity of sterilization, not euthanasia, as an effective solution to reproduction and unnecessary breeding. Over time, their numbers can be effectively reduced and their lives improved.

We care for all animals, regardless of age, breed, illness or disability, and believe these precious souls are to be given the respect of any other God-created life. Please join us in our mission to provide an animal-loving community, where pets are at home, not home-less!
