Business Challenge With an increasing number of products ranging from media converters to Layer 2-4 switches, Allied Telesis had to provide a management platform that could work with all of their products so that their customers could centrally configure, monitor, and manage the devices.

There was also an increasing need for a platform that enabled Allied Telesis to build a full-featured NMS product to manage complex Triple Play Networks—a platform that could scale and evolve with these new services and help customers reduce not only truck rolls but also help NOC resources provision new services and manage Triple Play Networks.

Besides, Allied Telesis felt that it couldn’t go to the negotiating table unless they had a management solution as part of their offering.

Allied Telesis had to choose a reliable, robust, and cost-effective network management platform to quickly build their management application. Given a short time to market, stringent resource constraints, and a tight budget, Allied Telesis did not want to build everything on its own and was on the lookout for a network management framework that could be customized with minimal effort to meet the requirements.

Allied Telesis wanted the framework to be affordable, proven, and rich in features such as carrier-grade scalability, high-speed event correlation, remote configuration, and many out-of-the-box FCPS functions. Allied Telesis also evaluated framework vendors for breadth of solution, references, reliability, and financial stability.

Solution WebNMS Framework was one of the many frameworks that were considered for the Allied Telesis project.

The impressive clientele of WebNMS Framework of more than 150 customers, including Nortel Network, Motorola, Lockheed Martin, Chunghwa Telecom, and UTStarcom, helped Allied Telesis to choose WebNMS Framework as the platform for their management software development project.

Using WebNMS Framework, the engineers at Allied Telesis built the fully featured Allied Telesis Network Management System (NMS).

Featuring a full suite of FCAPS applications, Allied Telesis NMS provides centralized element management for a complete range of Allied Telesis product lines.

Allied Telesis NMS fully leverages the fault, performance, and security management capability of WebNMS Framework, which is critical for ensuring high availability of the Allied Telesis devices.

“WebNMS’ framework was robust, proven, and scalable. However, the key deciding criteria were the highly collaborative approach, close working relationship, and top-notch technical support offered by WebNMS.”

Allied Telesis NMS Minimizes Truck Rolls The Allied Telesis NMS was built to minimize truck rolls for performing diagnostics or provision changes. The remote configuration facility in Allied Telesis NMS enables network operators to do configuration jobs on the network devices from a central console located miles away from the network.

Allied Telesis NMS - The Umbrella Software The Allied Telesis NMS was purposely built to be the umbrella management software for an entire range of Allied Telesis products including:

Key Features of Allied Telesis NMS • Auto discovery of Telesyn and Allied Telesis elements in the network

• FCAPS applications for centrally configuring, managing, and monitoring Telesyn elements

• Tree-based menus for easy navigation; support for creating custom views

• Graphical, color-coded representations of network topologies, enabling administrators to determine network status at a glance

• Full-featured SNMP management with trap forwarding for integration with Network Management Systems, such as HP OpenView™

• Point-and-click provisioning feature enables administrators to manage device configurations from a central place seamlessly

• Support for seamless integration with network operating center environments
