Contoso, a Financial Services Provider company wants to bring new cloud services to their Datacentres and edge locations to deliver new hybrid cloud solutions to their internal business unit teams. Due to latency and regulatory compliance Contoso can’t use the public cloud for several scenarios.

The company needs a true hybrid cloud solution to deliver a consistent experience across their entire digital estate.

✓ Due to regulatory compliance all data must reside within the company’ s Datacenters✓ Billing must follow a pay-as-you-go consumption based model for all new deployments✓ Ensure the best possible user experience with the minimum possible latency✓ Maximize developer productivity by empowering them to build and deploy applications

the same way whether they run on premise or cloud

Why Azure Stack?

Microsoft Azure Stack is a hybrid cloud platform that allows delivering Azure services in a company’s datacentre. This platform is designed to support evolving business requirements. Azure Stack can enable new scenarios for modern applications, such as edge and disconnected environments, or meet specific security and compliance requirements.

Azure stack is effectively an extension of Azure to consistently run hybrid applications on-premises.

What is Azure Stack?

Azure Stack Integrated Systems

Azure Stack integrated systems are multi-server systems meant for production use, and are designed to get customers up and running quickly. They are offered through a partnership of Microsoft and various hardware partners, creating a solution that offers cloud-paced innovation and computing management simplicity.

Because Azure Stack is offered as an integrated hardware and software system, companies have the flexibility and control they need, along with the ability to innovate from the cloud.

Azure Stack integrated systems range in size from 4-16 nodes, and are jointly supported by the hardware partner and Microsoft. Azure Stack integrated systems can be used to create new scenarios and deploy new solutions for any production workloads.

Azure Stack Development Kit

The Azure Stack Development Kit (ASDK) is a single-node deployment of Azure Stack that can be downloaded and used for free. All ASDK components are installed in virtual machines running on a single host server computer that must meet or exceed certain requirements.

The ASDK is meant to provide an environment in which companies can evaluate Azure Stack and develop modern applications using APIs and tooling consistent with Azure in a non-production environment.

The ASDK is designed to provide an Azure-consistent hybrid cloud experience for:

❑ Administrators: The ASDK is a great resource to evaluate and learn about the available Azure Stack services.

❑ Developers: The ASDK can be used to develop hybrid or modern applications on-premises (dev/test environments). This offers repeatability of development experience prior to, or alongside, Azure Stack production deployments.

Who will benefit using ASDK?

Page 11: Webinar Series: Azure Advanced Technologies In Practice...Services: Microsoft Azure Stack enables providers to deliver a wide variety of services and applications, such as virtual

Deployment Connection Model: Choose to deploy Azure Stack either connected to the internet (and to Azure) or disconnected. To get the most benefit from Azure Stack, including hybrid scenarios between Azure Stack and Azure, its recommended to deploy connected to Azure, and this is the model adopted in this solution.

Billing model: Option to choose either Pay-as-you-use or the Capacity billing model. Pay-as-you-use billing model deployments must be able to report usage through a connection to Azure at least once every 30 days. Therefore, the Pay-as-you-use billing model is only available for connected deployments.

Subscriptions: For each Azure Stack, there is one default subscription and many tenant subscriptions. The default subscription is an Azure subscription that is charged if there isn't a tenant-specific subscription. Cloud Service Provider (CSP) subscriptions are the preferred choice for registration when a CSP reseller or an end customer operates Azure Stack.

Portal: The primary methods of interacting with Microsoft Azure Stack are the administrator portal, user portal, and PowerShell

Usage data: Microsoft Azure Stack collects and aggregates usage data across all resource providers, and transmits it to Azure for processing by Azure commerce. The usage data collected on Azure Stack can be viewed via a REST API.

Azure Stack Key Concepts:

Page 12: Webinar Series: Azure Advanced Technologies In Practice...Services: Microsoft Azure Stack enables providers to deliver a wide variety of services and applications, such as virtual

Identity: Azure Stack uses either Azure Active Directory or Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) as an identity provider.

Personas: There are two varieties of users for Microsoft Azure Stack:

Cloud operator: Can configure Azure Stack and manage offers, plans, services, quotas, and pricing to provide resources for their tenants. Cloud operators also manage capacity and respond to alerts.

Tenant: (user) consumes services that the cloud administrator offers. Tenants can provision, monitor, and manage services that they havesubscribed to, such as Web Apps, Storage, and Virtual Machines.

Regions: Azure Stack regions are a basic element of scale and management. An organization may have multiple regions with resources available in each region. Regions may also have different service offerings available.

Services: Microsoft Azure Stack enables providers to deliver a wide variety of services and applications, such as virtual machines, SQL Server databases, SharePoint, Exchange, and more.

Plans: Plans are groupings of one or more services. Create plans to offer to tenants. In turn, tenants subscribe to offers to use the plans and services they include.

Offers: Offers are groups of one or more plans that tenants subscribe to. An offer comes with a set of base plans, and service administrators can create add-on plans that tenants can add to their subscription.

• Azure stack is constantly becoming available to many countries around the world by integrated partners. Here is the list of countries that it is currently supported.

• You can try Azure stack for free using the Azure Stack Development Kit, a single-server deployment option (Details)

• Azure Stack is delivered as an integrated system with software installed by Microsoft’s hardware partners on pre-qualified hardware

• Using Azure CSP Subscriptions with Azure Stack supports only connected deployment modes with Pay-as-you use billing

• Currently Azure stack Expansion Nodes must have identical configuration with the existing ones.

• It’s considered a best practice to begin with less nodes (min 4) with higher spec configuration, to maximize the expandability potential

• A list of Azure Marketplace items are available for Azure Stack (Details)

• Hardware Partners can offer hardware maintenance support. Microsoft CSP Partners offer support for Azure Stack Services.

• There are two key categories for Azure Stack deployments which refer to Customer Owned and Service Provider deployments (Details)

• Azure Stack Hardware Datasheets are available from hardware partners, for example HPE to help with the deployment capacity planning (Details)

Latency and Connectivity

Address latency and connectivity requirements by processing data locally in Azure Stack and then aggregating in Azure for further analytics, sharing common application logic across both.

Maximize developer productivity by empowering them to build and deploy applications the same way whether they run on Azure or Azure Stack. Implement a common DevOps approach across hybrid cloud environments.

Azure Stack enables to rapidly provision and deploy resources while preserving the secure data isolation of an on-premises environment. It provides private cloud security combined with public cloud flexibility.

Azure Stack allows companies to develop and deploy apps in Azure Stack to meet regulatory requirements. Also, if there is need to keep data in a country without an Azure Datacentre, they can securely be store on-premises with Azure Stack.
