A gurukul (Sanskrit guru "teacher" or "master"; kul domain, from kula, "extended family") is a type of school in India, residential in nature, with shishyas living in proximity to the guru, often within the same house. In a gurukul, shishyas reside together as equals, irrespective of their social standing, learn from the guru and help the guru in his day-to-day life, including the carrying out of mundane chores such as washing clothes, cooking, etc. The guru-shishya tradition (parampara) is a hallowed tradition in Hinduism and needs to be preserved.

PROJECT 2: [DURATION: 15 WEEKS]

Continuing on the same thread of ART, the aim of this project is to attempt to revive the ancient principles of GURUKUL and create, in a rural setting, a SCHOOL FOR DANCE AND MUSIC.

The chosen site is at the foothills of the Kanakeshwar temple complex, a short distance away from the main city of Alibaug. The strong context of the Shiva temple along with its lush green setting makes it an ideal setting for a DANCE AND MUSIC GURUKUL.

Mandatory functions to be provided within the Gurukul are as follows:

Administration areas (inclusive of Director’s Cabin, admin staff areas, reception etc.) Teachers’ Accommodation (6 to 8 staff members) Theory Studios (4 nos.) Multi-purpose rooms for dance and music practice (6 to 8 nos.) Mess Hall with attached kitchen for 40 students and on-site staff Student hostels (separate for boys and girls each to accommodate 20

students, and provide for preparatory areas, and laundry rooms in addition to other regular facilities – hostel accommodation can be dormitory style or in rooms)

Amphitheatre with provision of toilets and changing rooms

Keeping in mind the exquisite and ancient setting, students are required to come up with innovative techniques in vernacular building as part of this design problem. Detail drawings of each cluster with structural details are expected as part of the final submission.
